NCAA should pay student athletes

Paying players is a bit of a toss up for me. I'd like to see someone actually do the research to figure out a lot of the details, kind of like what Withers940 mentioned above.

The thing I'd like to see changed right away is a player's ability to sell things unique to them. For example, if people are willing to pay Mason Fine $100 to sign a football, I think he should be able to do that. It's his signature, not UNT's, not the NCAA's, etc. Same goes for if Mason Fine can market himself to Wheaties and end up getting paid to be on a box of Wheaties, I think he should be able to be paid for that. Just my 2 cents.

Then that turns into a booster saying "I'd be willing to buy an autographed football from this 5* Offensive Lineman once a month for $5k each if he signs with us."    Where does the line stop?

If the NCAA is going to continue being a multi-billion dollar business, there should be a payment model for the kids. Period. That's just how you run businesses. Didn't realize so many on this board were anti-capitalist.

I believe the capitalist model would include pay for performance. The more you contribute to the bottom line (winning?) the more pay you receive. Catch a touchdown pass, receive a bonus or pay for position. Or perhaps pay for perceived value versus other players at the same position. Universities could setup a draft to sign players then pay based on which round they were drafted.

Alternately pay players based on a socialist system. Everyone receives the same pay regardless of sport, position,  gender, P5 or G5, wealth of the university, etc.

Endless debate on the pay. And by the way, get an education.  Then charge the athletes for tuition, room and board, books and fees.
