DRC: UNT burning questions series No. 2 -- Will Bryce English break out?

Nothing would please me more than to witness the second-coming of Booger.  I would like to see Bryce take the field on healthy wheels and measure up to that standard.

To a certain extent, longtime Mean Green fans have been waiting for the next Brandon Kennedy ever since, even though a player of that caliber is probably a one in a lifetime kind of guy.

We are talking about a player who was the two-time Sun Belt Player of the Year (2002 and 2003) as a nose tackle and ranked third nationally in 2002 with 24 tackles for loss.

Just ridiculous.

We've had years where our starting NT struggled to get 24 tackles, much less 24 for loss.

EJE lead the team last year with 10, as a linebacker.

I loved Booger's play and marveled at the things that he did.  But, Booger did not face the caliber of competition that Bryce will face.

I don't expect Bryce to be back up to speed until later in the schedule but I believe that ultimately you're going to see double-team blocking to keep him out and if that happens Young will go wild.

I really think that Bryce will improve the defense, front to back.

Without double checking I feel pretty comfy posting that English will not face the level of OOC play that Booger did.

2000:

  • OOC games:  Baylor, @Texas Tech, @UNLV, @#4 Kansas State, Samford
  •  2nd Team All Big West
  • 1 SCK, 10 TFL, 2 FF, 1 FR

2001:

  • OOC Games: TCU, @#3 Oklahoma, @Texas Tech, @USF
  • Unanimous 1st Team All SBC
  • 1 SCK, 6 TFL,  2 FF,  2 FR

2002:

  • OOC Games: @#3 Texas, @Alabama, @TCU, @Arizona, USF
  • Unanimous All SBC
  • SBC Player of the Year
  • SBC Defensive Player of the Year
  • 10 SCK, 24 TFL
2003:
  •  OOC Games: @#1 Oklahoma, Baylor, @Air Force, @#14 Arkansas
  • Unanimous All SBC
  • SBC Player of the Year
  • 20 TFL, Don't have his other stats at hand.

So unless we face four Top 5 teams this year, and a Top 15 thrown in just to make sure, Booger will have faced a much tougher OOC schedule than Bryce.

Still think Bryce is going to have a big impact.

Booger could dunk. I know because he dunked on me at University Courtyard. Can Bryce do that?

when I came to campus in 2001, the five best basketball players here at the time were Chris Davis, Leonard Hopkins, Rusty Chiles, @Guaranteed22 and Booger Kennedy.

Leonard Hopkins... I really liked his play.
Chris David... that guy could style some MC Hammer glasses like no one else. I ran into him and he lives in Frisco with his family after retiring from France play.

With the exception of the 2002 Texas game (which I know he was outstanding because I was there) what were his stats against the OOC vs the SBC games?

UNT could use a top-end nose tackle, though. English certainly has the ability to become that kind of player.

I think having a discussion around this statement would be a lot more productive than say

CAN HE BE AS GOOD AS ONE OF THE BEST UNT PLAYERS OF AAAAAAAALL TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME
