Jerry Levias broke the color barrier in the Southwest Conference.  Abner Haynes and Leon King were the first African-American players in a major college in the south 10 years prior recruited and coached by Ken Bahnsen.

GO MEAN GREEN

Jerry Levias would not have broken the color barrier had it not been for Hayden Fry.

Speakng of the SWC. Starting in 1957 when Abner Haynes and (Dr. ?) Leon King  started playing varsity ball, there was only one SWC school that played North Texas before 1974 when we opened with SMU. And that school was Arkansas. Only one Big-8 (now B-12) school played us. And that was Oklahoma State.

Houston played us, but they were not in the SWC at the time. AND when we went down to Houston to play them in 1959 Abner Haynes and Leon King were refused a room at the team Hotel.  I never read anything to indicate that the University of Houston offered alternative accommodations or registered any sort of protest in our behalf. They had to sleep on the train, and their teammates, in a show of support, joined them.

Bob Way is shown in the upper right hand corner of the program.   He later coached at North Texas on Rod Rust's staff and stayed to teach in the men's PE department after his coaching days were over.   He is a really good guy.

One of the nicest people you could ever meet.

Before any other statues are put up at Apogee, this should be commemorated first.

That's a very legitimate idea although, I think the Joe Greene statue needs to be first.  We really, really need to get the Joe Greene recognition done soon.  He's the greatest player we have ever had and an NFL Hall of Famer.

The first statue should be King & Haynes, what NT and those two accomplished far exceeds anything that can be  accomplished solely on the field.

Joe Greene is special to NT and one of the greatest players ever and he should also be commemorated.   King and Haynes just have a far more unique and important story.
