i.e., you can't judge a recruiting class until you see what those kids do 2, 3, 4 years later on the field.

You maybe can't judge the recruits for a few years.  But you can judge the recruiters.  In head to head matchups where we offered an so did our peers, did we win those battles?

If all you are getting is kids no one else wants, that a bad sign.  If you are signing kids that other staffs want, that is a good sign.

I haven't actually sat down and ran the numbers yet, but is sure feels like this class is getting more kids with more offers than before.

Dodge & Mac didn't identify those players (wanted by other teams or not) that would contribute to success within the UNT scheme.  The job of the recruiter isn't just winning match-ups against competing coaches, it's identifying those kids you can sign that will be successful in your system.  That means identifying character and academic potential, in addition to athletic ability.

For every one recruit that no one wanted that will have success there are a dozen that have no real place on an FBS two deep.   You fill your roster with those and you will lose a lot.  See: Most of our time post DD.

I really think QB is a different animal than other positions, too. So many QBs get offered on size alone (Greer, Means), but you can find undersized QBs who can play on the FBS level but don't have many or any other offers because of height (Kellen Moore, Rakeem Cato, Blake Bogenschutz, Matt Johnson, McKenzie Milton, Mason Fine, etc).

For the same reason, it's also easier for an underrecruited guy to pan out in scat back/slot receiver roles. Chancellor, Harris, Mike Lawrence, Evan Johnson, etc. These guys are underrecruited because of size but as long as they make people miss it doesn't matter.

On the line, tight ends, linebackers, outside receivers, 3-down backs, defensive backs, the more offers the player has, the better chance he has to be good, statistically speaking.

It is always nice to have the "athlete" sign on. It creates a lot of flexibility .I still think for us to solidify OL, DL and Linebackers we need to have large Red Shirt classes. If they have the length you can always add quality lbs. Get the bigger wt. room and IPF done asap.

You have touched all bases on what NT fans have been saying for years to ignore getting beat in recruiting.

Who else wanted Mason Fine?

You can’t make your living on the Mason Fine’s of the world. We’re lucky he’s been such a huge pickup but these situations are few and far between. This program will not be successful hoping for this type of luck on a consistent basis. SL has not done well recruiting. Disappointing NT is coming in at 6th....

Has FIU just recruited the best class in recent C-USA history? Also what happened to all the Florida players going to Marshall?  FIU and FAU

FIU and FAU hiring Butch Davis and Lane Kiffin helps keep some of those kids who would go to Marshall or other G5s to stay closer to home.

Hmmm how about 3 bowl games  n the last 5 years? Change.

Those 5 seasons have totaled a 28-35 record, with 1 bowl win. Its certainly better than it was in the 5 year time period preceding this, when from 2008-2012, we went 15-45, or the 5 years before that, from 2003-2007, when we went 23-37, but none of that is getting us recruiting classes that are in the top quartile of the G5s.

I think we have all learned to be skeptical of 4 star players going to a G5 school.  So we shall see.

I can agree that we should target top 25% C- USA ranking. If we can hold 6 maybe 5 that would be a positive compared to the last few years. The quality of Qb and Wr has improved greatly. That also needs to become true for all positions. Then maybe we can break 80% on the Natl rankings.
