Franschilla, Cross, Harper, and Lutz in that order. Any of those four could easily recruit to UNT and turn this around quickly.

Fraschilla has been out of coaching a looong time now.  There would be nothing certain with him now.

He is still a student of the game and hasn't lost his X's and O's. He lives locally, is well know, and respected. I believe he would be able to recruit the DFW area well. We need someone like they if we are going to compete with SMU  for local talent. Everyone on my list obviously has pros and cons but I think he could hit the DFW area hard and actually developed his guys which Benford wasn't able to do. This would also depend on his assistants.

What tells you Lutz could turn it around?

So with this one it could go really well or reall bad fast. We took Benford who was a long time assistant and he ran a great team into the ground. I know there is concern about bringing an assistant in, but I remember many people supporting the Benford hire (even though he may not have been their first choice). Lutz brings what Benford had. Lots of experience from a well know basketball school. He can recruit and he is relatively young. Lutz can definetly recruit this area. He had two top 35 recruiting classes at SMU. His time at SFA and SMU show he can recruit texas, locally, and well. Maybe he ends up being Benford 2.0 or maybe he doesn't make the same mistakes Benford made and turns this thing around. In short he has all the positives people saw in Benford but I don't believe he would make the same micromanaging mistakes.

I don't really disagree with any of that.  But how many coaches do you know who have been out of coaching for 15 years, come back to take on a rebuilding process, and had success?  And it's not like he had a long, illustrious head coaching career before that.  I'm sure a lot of players would be very interested in playing for him, but you take on a certain risk by taking on the unknown.

Honestly, Lutz could be a home run hire, but the Benford experiment has me gun shy over hiring another assistant that is a great recruiter that has never led a program.  I know that isn't fair to Lutz, but Benford, who I thought would be a good hire, has ruined hiring from that direction for me.

Completely agree.

What about Mark Slessinger at New Orleans? He just won a regular season title and has his squad in the Southland title game. It must be terribly difficult to recruit there with LSU and Tulane, and he won a conference title at a program that almost dropped down to D-III before school administrators came to their senses.

If the 22 more qualified applicants turn down the job, then for sure Wren should take a look at him.
