That's interesting. Do conferences consider rivalries ( or creating potential rivalries ) in the expansion equation ? I know t.v. market, recruiting,  etc. is, but this is something I've never heard or recognized.

Not sure how much it plays in but one thing the addition of West Virginia has shown us is if a school doesn't have any sense of true rivalry with others in their own conference they just feel out of place. It wouldn't be that bad for UH since they are at least in the state but UNT would literally share the same metro area with TCU. Also, I believe (and I may be wrong here) that Baylor, Tech and UT have larger alumni bases in DFW than Houston which would help fill Apogee.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to mull that over and watch for this as a concideration in future expansion /restructuring activities.

So why settle for the Big 12? Why not pressure our AD for PAC or SEC? All conferences would likely expand for the right candidate.

If you go PAC, you might see us again.  We usually play at least one PAC team every season.  Last was the Pirate on the Paloose, this season will be the Dogs in Seattle, the Beavers the season after that and the Ducks in 2018.

If we are shooting  for top shelf, I say go independent with a CBS network deal and schedule whoever you want.

Lol, no. Though I love the theory of this and I may have even said the same thing on here before, but we don't have the fluffed up and media driven perception like Notre Dame to pull this off. We would drown in debt and irrelevance..wait

Some of you guys are so linear in your thinking.

Most of the schools on the Big XII list have no shot at this Big XII expansion and know that. By taking a run at it, they just got their name mentioned not just with the Big XII but with the schools they have a realistic chance of aligning with.

It's like seeing a group of hot people at a bar around a celebrity. You can guess which of the 8-10 people you have a shot at and approach them or go hit on the celebrity, watch the reactions and figure out pretty quickly who thinks you are funny/smart/cute/handsome/repellant/annoying and focus your efforts more intelligently.

Love this thinking

Hell, most of this fan base would be giddy with one OOC home game a year if that home game was SMU every year.

Its the most emotionally abused fan base in college football with the unquestionably lowest self-esteem. Those two things go hand in hand, after all. Many still think CUSA is the conference of choice. THAT'S how little self initiative this fan base has been beaten into having.

And, of course, your post is dead on.

Yay!! 6 body bag games a season!

Seriously though, I think the state of our athletics is becoming better with all of the changes that have been made, but we really have to prove something on the field before we say, "Yeah! We hired a new staff, we can compete with UT, Tech, Baylor, etc."

On the other hand, I say give it a shot, what's the worse that can happen, as mentioned before, we get our name out there and they say no.

But what has Ark Stae done to even get into the AAC? Why would tbose schools see Ark State someone they want to be peers with?

Imo,this looks like your AD promoting himself and Ark State rushing to be seen as a player on sports when they have done very little. Its part of the circus that has become college sports.

I'm not saying they deserve to be in, but they've done a fair amount to at least be considered.

Maybe you ought to take a harder look.

AState has moved into the range of AAC in attendance. We now self-fund $15 million getting us in the ballpark as Houston.

Built a huge new press box with premium seating, new indoor practice facility, next up is a new field house with offices, new training room, new weight room, new meeting rooms, and even more premium seating.

Outpaced most of CUSA in season ticket sales. Outdrawing 75% of CUSA in football.

And you have a legitimate FBS AD. UNT hasn't had one for at least 19 years. We hopefully get one on 8/22.

There is a reason Ark State did not get invited to CUSA, right? The numbers you provide are easily given to interpretation

Willing to bet no school or few achools in the AAC veiw Ark State as a peer school.

Range of AAC is quite a stretch.

Arkstfan is/has been a good board member for years.  Those of you throwing around insults are ridiculous.  Honestly, the only thing Arkansas State doesn't have in its favor is market size.  Their department has been well run for years, much better than our department.

Now, if they could secure indoor plumbing, they would already be in CUSA.

Seriously though, we should not be on here criticizing Ark. St

I don't think anyone is being critical of him. I just think that he thinks outside of reality. See my thread titled UNT to the Big12. That's a similar comparison to outside of reality thinking such as A State to the AAC. Memphis is their Debo and there is nothing they can do about it. Not having market size is similar to not having nothing. 1. They have well ran program, that is true. 2. They are in a pitiful market. 1 can change on a dime, 2 is unchangeable.

Arkansas State has won the messaging war.

Each new fund-raising outreach. Each new ticket campaign whether for season tickets or bowls. Each groundbreaking for a new facility. Each grand opening for a new facility. Every single time our message is the same.

1. We need this to reach our goal of being the best program in group of five.

2. We need this to compete with our peer group and that is followed by specifically mentioning a number of AAC schools and sometimes some MWC.

We have zero control and influence over whether we are ever invited by the Big XII or AAC or MWC. But the AAC and MWC have no way of stopping us from using their top programs as our measuring stick.

We do not evaluate what we have done in light of what others in our conference have done. We measure everything against the elite G5 schools. Our fans understand that a coach who wins the conference but loses ground in national rankings is not performing to standards.

Our goal isn't winning the Sun Belt, but we aren't going to achieve our goals if we don't.

It's a vision thing.

The market strategy worked great didn't it?

Not our fault that the presidents in CUSA are ignorant of how TV works. The market model has been irrelevant for anything other than a conference subscriber network since the capacity to do live ratings came about.

Seems to be working ok for the AAC based on their last TV deal.
