Meacham out of the running

If Cumbie is going to UT, TCU losing Meacham is a much bigger deal. I'm reserving judgment on why Meacham is taking his name out of the running, if the report is true. TCU could have pulled a money truck up to Meacham's house this weekend.

I feel like UT and Cumbie are the factors. Strong seems to want Cumbie down there so I bet Patterson had to break out the big donor wallet to keep Meacham. I assume (and just assume) that we couldn't beat their offer so we didn't try? If I were in Patterson's position with my two OCs about to be poached, I'd be in people's offices asking for money try to keep them both or at least one of them.

I think that it may play out that way, but I also think Doug seriously considered our job because he wants to be a head coach.  I suspect that it was close but Littrell won the day with the powers that be.  As I have stated all along, either one of them would have been GREAT hires.  I have no problem waiting a week for Littrell.

I do not think he would have turned down that substantial of a raise unless GP called begging him to stay with Cumbie out and offered a very big raise.

The measured way to read this is that if Candidate A was told that Candidate B was going to get the job and it would be announced on Day X, Candidate A is given the chance to say he is no longer a candidate for the job before Day X, allowing everyone to save face.

I know I posted in another thread that Fedora doesn't want any distractions so they won't announce until after the ACC championship game on Saturday but what happens if UNC beats #1 Clemson on Saturday and sneaks into the CFB.

1. Littrell may garner interest from some bigger fish after beating Clemson and we may be left out in the cold with both Meacham and Littrell gone. Hello Bruce Chambers.

2. We may not get Littrell until after January because he is preparing UNC for the National Championship which seriously hampers our recruiting efforts.(I know Herrman pulled double duty at Ohio State and Houston, but that may not be the case here)

 

After considering this scenario I think we want an announcement ASAP so we don't get kicked in the nuts.

If UNC beats Clemson, Gene Chizik is the first assistant to get hired away by a bigger fish, no question. 

Seth Littrell is an Oklahoma kid and I believe firmly that he wants to be a head coach in Oklahoma or as close to it as possible. There are only 3 jobs worth having in the state of Oklahoma. They are Tulsa, OU, and Oklahoma State. Tulsa is in their first year under the former Baylor OC who took them from 2-10 to 6-6. That job won't open again for 3 years at least. OU and Okie Lite are coached by lifers and will not open up until Gundy and Stoops are ready to retire. 

Next closest job would be the Razorbacks, Bielema is in his 3rd season at 7-5 (5-3 conf) which is his best season yet. He will be there at least 2 more years.

Then it goes to the Metroplex. TCU's Patterson is a coach for life. SMU just paid over $2 million for Chad Morris. He will be there at least 2 more years. Then that leaves us, with a brand new stadium, fertile recruiting ground, winnable conference, and newly deeper pockets. We are the choice destination for someone wanting to be close to DFW or Oklahoma.

The Tulsa job would've been optimal for Littrell but he was either beat out or didn't want to leave UNC after only one season. We are the next opening in his head coaching wheelhouse for at least 2 years. His upward trajectory won't allow him to stay as a playcaller for two more years. He is ready to jump in now. He will do great for us and take over for Stoops or Patterson someday. I'd say Gundy but I don't think his crimson blood would allow him to coach the Pokes but I could be wrong.

This is very logical....and I HOPE HOPE HOPE your theory is correct.  Not that it matters, this is what I thought too.  We shall see in the coming days...

UNC will not make the playoff if they beat Clemson.  There strength of schedule along with a loss to South Carolina will be to much to overcome.  The announcement will be next week!

If Alabama and Clemson both lost their title games, UNC might have enough lift to make it into the top 4.  Let's also keep in mind that Iowa and Michigan State are ranked #4 and #5, respectively, and so one of them has to drop a couple slots.  If Sparty wins the Big 10 game and Bama and Clemson both lose, chaos will ensue.  Unlikely but still possible.

I wouldnt be so sure to write this year class off. 

I also wouldnt call either one of these guys slam dunks.

I agree, main concern with both is they have never been a head coach.  A big difference between being a coordinator and being a HC.  A lot of people can make the transition, a lot of people can't.

This years class will be better than anything Mac ever brought in. You typically get a bump in recruiting with a new coach, but a young, energetic coach will see a spike as opposed to a bump

Id question Meacham's ability to recruit. Not a good recruiter

Id question Littrell's ability to put a staff together

Neither one has been a HC and will be running a program that has been a train wreck. They cant just focus on offense they need to focus on everything.
