Being massive favorite means little to WKU

This year's bowl eligibility could carry far less drama than recent seasons for Western Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers (5-1 overall, 3-0 Conference USA) can reach the six-win mark - and be the state's first team to do so - for the fifth straight year when they visit winless North Texas at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Denton, Texas.

"Bowl-eligible is a six-win thing that people talk about to me, but I think you need more wins than that," WKU coach Jeff Brohm said. "We're just going to focus on trying to win the game. It's a conference game. It's an important game on the road."

Last season, WKU used a "playoff mentality" to win its last four regular-season games and surge into a bowl berth.

The Tops also won their final four games in 2013 and were denied a bowl bid. In 2012, the pressure mounted late in the year as the team eventually claimed its first bowl trip.
