UNT fires McCarney

Dan McCarney was fired as the University of North Texas’ head football coach Saturday night following a devastating loss to Portland State University in the Mean Green’s homecoming game.

The Vikings hammered UNT 66-7, the largest margin of defeat ever for a Football Bowl Subdivision team in a game against a team from the Football Championship Subdivision.

The loss dropped UNT to 0-5 for the first time since the 2008 season and continued a rapid downhill slide following the Mean Green’s Heart of Dallas Bowl win following the 2013 season.

UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal confirmed the school’s decision to part ways with McCarney in a hastily called press conference that took the place of the Mean Green’s regular postgame interview session.

“This football team has continued to struggle more and more each week in the last three or four weeks,” Villarreal said. “It started at the beginning of the season. We are not in position where we are competitive really in any phase of the game.”

This is disappointing.

This means after 6 years we are looking for our 3rd coach. Can we get someone we can stick with for longer than 3 or 4 years?

Was McCarney unable to recruit effectively? I know recruiting in Texas is tough when you have to compete with Texas, OU and now TCU, Baylor, aTm for recruits. Those schools will always get the top tier recruits because they are Texas, OU, et al but I would hope UNT could and should be better at getting the 3/2/1 star recruits.

When it came to recruiting, Mac struggled quite a bit. Often times we would lose out on 2-3 stars to other CUSA schools or even Sun Belt schools. You don't need to look further than the DMN Area 100 to see how bad we've been at recruiting. Last year we had one from that list (Kevin Dillman) compared with 4 for SMU, 2 Rice, 1 Tulsa, 2 UCF, 2 BYU, 1 Fresno State, 1 New Mexico, 3 Boise State, 3 San Diego State, and 1 UTSA. Out of 21 local recruits that went to the G5, we got 1. That's pretty bad.

We should be able to regularly pull in 3 stars with 2 stars to fill the gaps. Once in a while we should be able to pull down a 4 star who wants to stay close to home. Mac was nowhere close to that, even after the HoD win.
