Saying goodbye to the originals will be tough for UTSA

SAN ANTONIO — Emotions have been running on high this week for individuals involved in the UTSA football program.

It’s the last week for UTSA’s “Original 18″ players.

In some cases, emotions have been tougher to handle for the coaches than for the players.

Take, for instance, the feelings expressed Wednesday morning by UTSA defensive coordinator Neal Neathery and defensive end Cody Rogers.

Neathery has always said it would be hard on the coaches to say goodbye to the last of players who came in during the fall of 2010 in the start-up program’s first practice season.

“That’ll be tough,” Neathery admitted again on Wednesdy morning. “Really tough.”

This will be a close ballgame. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 17-14, 16-15, 18-13. Some team will win it, and win it close.

There will be terrible quarterback play on both sides. Defenses will "dominate." It will take a special kicker or kick returner to decide this one, maybe even a punt returner.

There could be an unplanned fumble along the way that contributes toward the deciding factor. Penalties at key moments will likely figure in as well; and, some could be quite controversial.

Injuries.
