  1. Western Kentucky may see a familiar face across the field when it visits North Texas on Thursday. Former WKU quarterback DaMarcus Smith could get the start for the winless Mean Green. UNT fired coach Dan McCarney on Saturday after the team's 66-7 loss to Portland State, and Vito said there are indications that interim coach Mike Canales - the team's offensive coordinator - will start Smith at QB against his former team. Smith has appeared in three games for North Texas this season, completing 6 of 18 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown with an interception. He orchestrated UNT's only scoring drive Saturday with about a minute to play. The dual-threat QB appeared in five games for WKU in 2013 under coach Bobby Petrino, completing 2 of 5 passes for 33 yards with no TDs and an interception. He also rushed 10 times for 51 yards but lost out on the starting job to Brandon Doughty. read more: http://www.bgdailynews.com/blogs/hilltopper_focus/hilltopper-focus-report-former-wku-qb-damarcus-smith-could-start/article_028fd070-708a-11e5-bd80-8b12d201f83c.html
  2. This year's bowl eligibility could carry far less drama than recent seasons for Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers (5-1 overall, 3-0 Conference USA) can reach the six-win mark - and be the state's first team to do so - for the fifth straight year when they visit winless North Texas at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Denton, Texas. "Bowl-eligible is a six-win thing that people talk about to me, but I think you need more wins than that," WKU coach Jeff Brohm said. "We're just going to focus on trying to win the game. It's a conference game. It's an important game on the road." Last season, WKU used a "playoff mentality" to win its last four regular-season games and surge into a bowl berth. The Tops also won their final four games in 2013 and were denied a bowl bid. In 2012, the pressure mounted late in the year as the team eventually claimed its first bowl trip. Things might not be as difficult this year. read more: http://www.bgdailynews.com/sports/wku/game-preview-being-massive-favorite-means-little-to-wku-at/article_04822b01-566d-5eb6-9f06-a494b53e3375.html
  3. DENTON -- In some ways, there are a lot of similarities between this season and the 2010 campaign for North Texas interim coach Mike Canales. Canales took over the Mean Green program after his boss was fired in each season -- Todd Dodge in 2010 and Dan McCarney last weekend. The Mean Green desperately need to regroup now, just like five years ago. Back then, the Mean Green went on the road to face Western Kentucky and pulled through for a 33-6 win. UNT will look for a repeat Thursday -- once again against WKU. That is where the similarities end. The Hilltoppers (5-1) are 3-0 in Conference USA play and feature one of the nation's top quarterbacks in Brandon Doughty. That's a far different scenario than in Canales' first game in 2010, when the Mean Green rolled past a WKU team that was 1-6. This time, UNT (0-5, 0-2 C-USA) is a huge underdog coming off a short week to prepare after its coach was fired. Canales and his players vowed to rally in the face of those long odds. "We have kids who truly believe they can win," Canales said. "They want to win and prove some people wrong who are saying that our season is over. Our kids are prideful and will bounce back. They want to prove that they can still play football." read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/20151014-first-test-for-unt-interim-coach-mike-canales-is-a-grand-one.ece
  4. Western Kentucky offensive lineman Brandon Ray was charged with careless driving and an aggravated count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol following an incident on July 9. Ray, 20, was driving the wrong way down a one-way street when he was stopped by a member of the Warren County Sheriff's Office. Ray failed multiple field sobriety tests and registered a 0.162 percent blood alcohol content level at Warren County Detention Center. In the state of Kentucky, the legal BAC limit for drivers under age 21 is 0.02 percent. Ray was released the following day after posting a $1,000 bond. He’s due in court Oct. 7. read more: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/wku-all-american-ol-cited-for-drunkenly-driving-wrong-way-on-one-way-street-163259191.html
