  4. We are lucky to welcome to the blog Drew Champlin of the Dothan Eagle (for now). Drew covers Troy, but is soon making the move to cover UAB and will heading to Conference USA. We’ll see him down the line again. Here’ his take on this week’s game. 1. Has Troy reponded to bottoming out last year? Yeah, they’re better than they were last year, but it isn’t showing when they turned the ball over so much over the past two games. You can at least see some fight in the Trojans after falling behind early in the two losses but coming back, especially against Mississippi State. But with the rest of the conference improving in talent and facilities, the road back to the top is very difficult. 2. Has Troy’s defense improved at all? Yeah, but it has given up too many big plays and still has problems in pass coverage. Troy can stop a team on the ground at the line, then give up a 30-yard run. So, there’s still some inconsistency. The defensive line can’t get much pass rush, but the linebackers have been solid and so have the cornerbacks. Most of the big pass plays came in 1-on-1 with the safeties. 6. TROY — Jimmie Arnold made a strategic decision after his Troy teammates/roommates had teased him and Troy co-eds had ignored him. The offensive lineman had gone two years without cutting his hair, long enough that it drooped down past his shoulders, regularly dripped into his sink and adversely affected his social life. After grayshirting with the Trojans in 2008 and redshirting in 2009, Arnold made a break from his past in 2010. Out came the scissors. “I just needed a change,” Arnold said. “Not many girls liked it, so I had to go with the clean-boy look.” His follicles no longer get noticed on the field, but Arnold is making up for it with his play. An injury put him in the starting lineup last weekend against Mississippi State. Now, he’s fully entrenched at right guard when the Trojans (1-2) play at North Texas (1-2) on Saturday. “He’s finally getting his time and he’s showing it,” center Kyle Wilborn said. Wilborn was quite familiar with hippie Arnold. They roomed together for a couple of years, long enough for Wilborn to judge Arnold as messy, but “not too bad.” Read more: http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/article/20120918/SPORTS0404/309180019/Troy-football-Arnold-loses-locks-gains-starting-job?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Sports|p
  7. Mississippi State score 20 points off of four Troy turnovers in the first half. The Trojans fumbled on their last two possessions of the first quarter and threw interception on their first two possessions of the second quarter. “It’s like I told them at halftime when they decide to protect the football, we’re going to have a good football team,” offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield said. “Bottom line is we’ve coached, we’ve harped, we’ve preached on it. We’re going to play the guys who protect the football.” Troy now hits the road to face North Texas. The Trojans fell to UNT last season for just the second time in the series’ history. “(North Texas) have played two very good teams (LSU and Kansas State). They’ve got good size and good speed,” Edenfield said. “They’re going to be tough and have a great plan.” Defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell says the Mean Green offense will pose a challenge as well. “They are a ball control team,” Rowell said. “They take advantage of things when they can and try not to make mistakes.” Read more: http://www.troymessenger.com/2012/09/17/troy-looks-to-rebound-on-road-versus-north-texas/
