  2. Former Texas A&M point guard J'Mychal Reese has decided to transfer to North Texas and will start school July 7. Reese made an official visit Tuesday and announced his decision the next morning via twitter. "Also wanna thank UNT for this opportunity. God is good!!" the former Bryan all-state point guard tweeted at @j_mych. North Texas was the only school visited by the 6-foot-1 Reese, who was dismissed 10 games into his sophomore season on Dec. 22 before A&M's game against Oklahoma. Reese missed the first four games of the season for violating team rules, then averaged seven points and 16 minutes a game over six games. Reese had previously met North Texas head coach Tony Benford, who was an associate head coach at Marquette for four seasons under former A&M assistant Buzz Williams. "He wanted to get somewhere that kind of suited him, suited his style," said his father John Reese. "He's had a relationship with Coach Benford for awhile. Coach Benford coached him at a camp several years ago, so they have a little bit of history." 3. DENTON North Texas head basketball coach Tony Benford has announced the signing of former Texas A&M standout and Bryan High School all-state guard J-Mychal Reese. Rated by ESPN.com as the states top point guard and the No. 7 point guard in the country coming out of Bryan in 2012, Reese, a 6-1, 173-pound guard, played 39 games for Texas A&M over the last two seasons and earned 25 starts. He poured in 6.3 points and dished out 1.8 assists per game while shooting 37.1 percent from three-point range in his freshman and sophomore seasons. "I've known J-Mychal and his family for a long time," Benford said. "I had a chance to work with him at a camp when he was in the eighth grade and was considered the top recruit in the country. I've known his parents for years, and J-Mychal comes from a great family. We couldn't be happier to have them all as a part of our Mean Green family." A three-time Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-State selection, Reese was a consensus four-star prospect and top-100 national recruit. ESPN.com rated Reese as the sixth-best recruit overall in the state of Texas and 54th-best player overall in the entire class of 2012. He chose Texas A&M over scholarship offers from several schools, including Kansas, Louisville, Memphis, Baylor and Texas. "J-Mychal is a tremendous point guard," Benford added. "He's a very cerebral player and can create for anyone on the floor, but still has the ability to make his own shot when he needs to. Hes going to fit in really well in our up-tempo system." North Texas is expected to request the NCAA grant Reese a waiver to allow him to play this year. Reese had a solid freshman season for the Aggies that included action in all 33 games, averaging 26.2 minutes per contest. He ranked fifth on the squad with 6.2 points per game, and also tallied 2.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Reese scored a season-high 15 points on four occasions, and had a personal best six assists twice. In all, Reese posted 10 double-digit scoring games in his time in College Station. "First off, I want to thank everyone at Texas A&M for helping me over the last two years," Reese said. "I really enjoyed my time in College Station. But at the same time, I am really excited to begin the next phase of my career at North Texas. I feel like North Texas and coach Benford are ready to take the next step, and I cant wait to be a part of it." Reese joins a highly-regarded North Texas recruiting class that includes a pair of high school state scoring leaders in Louisianas Greg White-Pittman and Texas' Jeremy Combs, as well as Muhammed Ahmed, an NJCAA All-American, and Todd Eaglin, who ranked third in the NJCAA in assists last year. "Scott Monarch did an amazing job recruiting J-Mychal, who will add to our already tremendous recruiting class that we've brought in," Benford said. 4. BLACKSBURG, Va. -- We were sitting at Waffle House, the one by campus, a few minutes after individual workouts on a Thursday morning, picking at eggs and bacon and whatever else the waitress put on our plates, when I asked Isaac Chew the question everybody asked me any time I mentioned I was heading to Virginia Tech to see Buzz Williams. Why did he leave Marquette for a historically bad job? Chew, the one full-time assistant who followed Williams from Milwaukee to Blacksburg, was seated to my right. The first thing he said in response to my question was the exact thing I expected him to say, and that thing was this: "People ask me that all of the time." I told him people ask me that all of the time, too. 6. UNT landed what should be one of its foundation pieces for the next few years in Carter power forward Jeremy Combs this week, which raises the question: Whos next? The early signing period is coming up pretty quickly and a lot of players are hitting the road in the next few weeks for official visits. One of those players is UNT target Iakeem Alston of Sheridan (Wyo.) Community College Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/09/hoops-recruiting-tidbit-3.html/
  7. Jeremy Combs saw a lot of familiar faces when he visited North Texas multiple times over the last few months, including old rival Jordan Williams. The friendship Combs has with the Dallas-area players on UNT’s roster and the connection he developed with the Mean Green’s coaching staff led the Dallas Carter standout to commit to play for the Mean Green on Monday night. “I felt comfortable at North Texas,” said Combs, a 6-foot-7 forward. “It will be a good fit for me. I like the coaches and the players.” Combs is a highly sought-after prospect who led Texas Class 4A in scoring with an average of 23.2 points a game to go along with 7.7 rebounds last season. He recently visited Texas Tech and had scholarship offers from more than a half dozen other schools, including UT-Arlington, Colorado State and Houston. TexasHoops.com ranks Combs No. 15 on its list of the top 100 players in Texas in the class of 2014, which is loaded with players who are highly regarded on a national level. Four of the top 10 players in the Rivals national top 150 for the class of 2014 are from Texas. Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day of the early signing period is Nov. 13. 8. The Scott Monarch era has apparently ended before it started at Claflin University. Just two months after he was hired as the Panthers’ men’s basketball coach, Monarch was named assistant coach at North Texas on Tuesday. In leaving behind the Division II program before coaching a single game to join the newest member of Division I Conference USA, Monarch reunites with former fellow Marquette University assistant coach and second-year Mean Green head coach Tony Benford. “I’m tremendously excited to be coming to the University of North Texas,” Monarch said in a school release. “I am familiar with the University and the entire North Texas region, and for me to work back in the area means a lot for me personally and professionally. Tony Benford and I worked really closely together at Marquette, and the opportunity to work with him once again at North Texas was too much to pass up. “It’s more than just recruiting and basketball to Tony because he helps players really grow up as individuals. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Tony and I have learned a great deal from him. As a father, Tony Benford is who I would want my son to play for.” Read more: http://thetandd.com/sports/claflin-men-s-basketball-coach-leaves-for-north-texas-state/article_3de84958-ee97-11e2-a4e7-001a4bcf887a.html
  9. Scott Monarch spent much of Wednesday unavailable to media and on the college basketball recruiting trail. Claflin University leaders had hoped hiring him as men’s hoops coach this past May would bring a stable of top high school or junior college prospects to Orangeburg. Instead, the school finds itself back to the drawing board in finding a new sideline leader to revive the program. On Tuesday, Monarch was named an assistant coach at the University of North Texas. Claflin Athletics Director Jerome Fitch released a statement a day later announcing the resignations of both Monarch and men’s track and field coach Christopher Woods. The latter left the school to accept a position at his alma mater Mississippi State. “We regret their decision, but we will move forward in a very positive manner,” said Fitch, who will now serve as interim track coach. “Our student-athletes deserve our best and Claflin’s tradition of excellence demands our best and that is what we will strive for.” Read more: http://thetandd.com/sports/college/coach-s-departure-remains-unexplained-by-claflin/article_7bf3a7f0-ef42-11e2-9938-001a4bcf887a.html?comment_form=true
