  1. Friday can’t come quickly enough for the Longhorns. Fresh off of a disappointing first-round loss at the hands of Baylor in the Big 12 Championship, the Longhorns are eager for redemption heading into the NCAA Tournament. Monday’s televised draw saw North Texas selected as the Longhorns’ home opponent. The matchup marks Texas’ first postseason appearance since 2014. “Big 12 (play) didn’t go as planned,” freshman forward Haley Berg said. “But we’ve looked over it, we’ve talked as a team and with our coaches, we know what happened and we know what we need to do to get back to our fighting mentality.” The two programs met earlier this year in a preseason contest. Texas dominated possession, outshooting the Mean Green 21-7, but it took a last-minute goal by sophomore Cyera Hintzen to put the team away, and the Longhorns edged by 1-0 on the road. 2. Interesting that our soccer coach's son was named player of the game in the Baylor contest last week. Also looks like SMU is doing the US Flag helmet (due to 9/11 being on Friday?)
  3. Jackie Kerestine wasnt asked to do much in her first live game action in almost a year. The North Texas goalkeeper joked after her teams season-opening 3-0 win over Texas Southern on Friday that she was tired and beat on a night when she faced just one shot on goal. Kerestine tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in the fourth game of last season and insisted being back on the field at the Mean Green Soccer Complex made up for a slow night. Well take it, Kerestine said of the win. Every once in a while they [Texas Southern] kept me on my toes, so I stayed in the zone. I felt like a freshman; it was nerve-wracking. It also felt natural. I belong out there. Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20140822-women-s-soccer-mean-green-blanks-texas-southern-in-opener.ece
  4. Kodi Tutt stood in front of the North Texas soccer team Wednesday in her pink shoes with butterfly wings attached and shared her story of triumph and tragedy, of hospital stays and battling cancer. Tutts tale has touched the hearts of hundreds of people from her hometown of Sanger to those as far away as Australia, including Kelsey Hodges. The UNT senior met the family a few months ago when she began working with Kodi Tutts older sister Maegan on her soccer skills. What started out as a fun way to help out a young player turned into something much more meaningful for Hodges, who helped organize a charity event surrounding the Mean Greens Conference USA opener at 7 p.m. Friday against Southern Mississippi. UNT will have a bounce house, face painting station and silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m., with all proceeds going to the Kick It Kodi foundation. After getting to know them over the last year, it felt like the right thing to do, Hodges said. They have given a lot to me as far as getting to know Kodi and Maegan and kind of being their older sister. It seemed like a cool idea, and they already have the Kick it Kodi foundation that helps kids with cancer who dont have the opportunities every little kid should have to run and play. Kodi, an energetic redhead who is now 9, was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve cells, on March 9, 2010. 5. Mean Green Soccer's Three Amigos Primed For Season Opener North Texas at Texas Southern Durley Field - Houston, Texas Aug. 23, 2013 - 7 p.m. Houston Baptist at North Texas MG Soccer Complex - Denton Aug. 25, 2013 - 1 p.m. They've gone by the "Three Amigos", the "Three Musketeers" and even the "Triangle of Death". No matter what you call them, the trio of Tess Graham, Lindsey Hulstein and Paige Bucklew are just proud to be called Mean Green. The three North Texas soccer sophomores have known each other for over a decade, and naturally gravitated to the same soccer club, Sting, for their entire teenage years. They all graduated from Denton Guyer High School together, and fate landed them at North Texas together as well. Basically, you could say that they're inseparable. Senior captain Kelsey Hodges might be two years older than her three teammates, but she's a Sting and Guyer alum as well. That gives North Texas soccer four hometown players that can count on friends and family in the stands each weekend. The Mean Green open the 2013 season on Friday at Texas Southern at 7 p.m. Follow @MeanGreenSoccer for in-game updates and the latest news on NT soccer. Your first chance to see these hometown stars and the rest of the Mean Green soccer team in action is in Sunday's home opener against Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. For more information on North Texas Women's Soccer, visit www.MeanGreenSports.com or call the North Texas Ticket Office at 940-565-2527.
