  1. When you get a chance to review it I would be interested in what you see on a second look. When I get back to Dallas I am going to rewatch it and will share my thoughts as well. I am in particular going to watch the o-line as I am thinking they might have had an impact on the QB play with the snaps and missed blocks etc...
  2. AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – University of Texas police took a man into custody for flying a drone over Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial stadium Saturday night during the Longhorns home opener against UNT. According to reports, the drone was spotted during the second half of the game hovering high above the field. Police say they located the operator on San Jacinto, and unidentified UT student, and ordered him to land the aircraft. The student was taken into custody, questioned and later released. The drone was confiscated. Read more: http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2014/09/01/police-arrest-ut-student-for-flying-drone-over-longhorns-unt-game/

  4. What They Said "We need to be one of the most improved teams in college football this week." --North Texas coach Dan McCarney on preparations for the home opener against SMU "It was really a good defense, and really poor execution on our part. It was just about as inept offense as we've had since I've been here." --McCarney on his offense's performance "Some really good series, and a lot of really valuable playing time for a lot of guys that have played very little. At times, we played well and tackled well." --McCarney on his defense's performance BOX SCORE/STATS LINK
  5. He said Josh has a good arm, velocity but that his aim was a tad high. He said if they can have him to adjust that he could be ok. He also said that our center was snapping the ball low and that could have contributed to some of the QB issues. This guy has been a high school coach so he has some knowledge about the game.
  6. 1. UNT is going to miss Derek Thompson There was a school of thought out there that UNT would not miss Heart of Dallas Bowl MVP Derek Thompson, a three-year starter at quarterback. UNT played both Josh Greer and Andrew McNulty and didn’t have any success with either player. Greer started 1-for-7 with two interceptions. McNulty’s first pass was also picked off. 7. AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas' defense picked off four passes and allowed just 94 yards of total offense and the No. NR/24 Longhorns picked up their 15th-consecutive season-opening win to open the Charlie Strong era in style with a dominant 38-7 victory over North Texas Saturday night at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Wide receiver John Harris set career-highs with seven receptions and 110 yards, and Texas used a balanced offensive attack to control throughout. Quarterback David Ash was 19-of-34 for 190 yards and a TD, while running backs Johnathan Gray and Malcolm Brown (two TD's) contributed 84 and 65 rushing yards, respectively. The Longhorn defense registered a touchdown via an interception return by linebacker Demarco Cobbs, tallied seven tackles for loss and sacked UNT quarterback Josh Greer four times while allowing just 40 yards in the first three quarters. From the start, North Texas' offense was going nowhere against a stout Longhorn defense, as the Mean Green's first six plays failed to gain a single yard. On the sixth play a tipped ball over the middle was intercepted by UT defensive back Dylan Haines at the UNT 39. The Lago Vista, Texas, returned the pick 21 yards, granting the Longhorns outstanding field position at the 18. Unfortunately for Texas, the Mean Green defense held firm and Nick Rose missed a 38-yard try wide right. With its defense having posted three consecutive three-and-outs, Texas nabbed a 7-0 lead with 4:06 left in the first quarter as Brown finished off a nine-play, 63-yard drive with a one-yard plunge. The key play proved to be a third down, 27-yard completion down the right sideline to the UNT 12 from Ash to Harris. UT's offense outgained the Mean Green 103-15 in total yards during the opening stanza. Read more: http://texassports.com/news/2014/8/30/FB_0830140019.aspx
  8. AUSTIN — It took Charlie Strong all of 25 minutes to finally put the “T” back in Texas. With about five minutes left in the first half Saturday, the Longhorns were sitting on a first-and-goal at the North Texas 3. On first down, Texas handed the ball off to Johnathan Gray over the left side for two yards to the 1. On second down, Texas handed the ball off to Gray again over the left side. No gain. On third down, Texas handed the ball off to Gray once again over the left side. No gain. On fourth down, Strong didn’t trot out the field-goal team in his head coaching debut at Texas. This wasn’t a night to settle for anything. This was a night to make a statement. With the crowd of 93,201 imploring Strong to go for it, he did — and quarterback David Ash won a footrace to the right corner of the end zone on a bootleg for the touchdown. That made it 21-0 on the way to a 38-7 victory over an overmatched North Texas team. But this game was all about Strong putting his stamp on Texas football. 9. AUSTIN – To the surprise of just about no one, Charlie Strong brought the helmet logos back on Saturday. To the relief of the 93,201 who poured into Royal-Memorial Stadium to watch his Texas debut, Strong brought the defense back, too. Exhibiting the kind of physicality and toughness Strong vowed to instill in his new program ever since he arrived at UT eight months ago, the Longhorns stifled an overmatched North Texas offense throughout a 38-7 victory on Saturday. 10. Texas gets up early, running all over the Mean Green and scoring touchdowns on each of its first three possessions. The defense plays with the kind of energy and intensity Strong has been asking for all off-season, giving the Longhorns a 31-3 halftime lead. After a quick third quarter touchdown makes it 38-3, Swoopes replaces Ash and the reserves come in on defense. Swoopes struggles and North Texas starters score a garbage time touchdown against Texas backups. Score: Texas 45, North Texas 13 Read more: http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/08/texas-prediciton-longhorns-cruise-past-north-texas-as-defense-stands-tall.html/
  11. DENTON Darius Terrell began his college career with visions of dashing across the goal line on the turf of Royal-Memorial Stadium in Austin as the cheers of thousands of fans clad in burnt orange reverberated through the stands. Terrell will be on that historic field Saturday, but the cheers wont be for him when the Longhorns open their season with a game against North Texas. Terrell spent two years at Texas trying to make the transition from playing wide receiver to tight end before switching course and transferring to UNT. The former DeSoto standout is listed as a co-starter with Carlos Harris at one slot receiver spot and is expected to play a major role for the Mean Green. I have been thinking about it ever since I found out that Texas is on the schedule, Terrell said. Im excited about playing them. My position coach is still there. Its going to be pretty cool. Terrell worked with tight ends coach Bruce Chambers at Texas. The former UNT player was in charge of building Terrell up and teaching him the art of blocking defensive ends, in addition to being a threat in the passing game. 12. Texas QB/WR/TE's vs North Texas DB's The Texas offense is starting over with a clean slate this year as they implement an offense that will more than likely place an emphasis on the running game rather than the passing game. David Ash returns to the lineup as the starting quarterback and while there are injury concerns, the focus of the offense shifting from throwing the ball to running it will alleviate some pressure. When Ash is called on to throw, the talent at the receiver position is anything but a bare cupboard. Marcus Johnson and Jaxon Shipley return as starters for the 2014 season, but beyond those two there will be a youth movement with Daje Johnson being suspended. The new offense will feature the TE position more than recent years, so Geoff Swaim and MJ McFarland will have to step up their game. North Texas’ best defensive position unit is at defensive back as they return 3 starters. CB Kenny Buyers and SS Laramie Lee, both CUSA honorable mention, led the team with 3 interceptions while SR CB James Jones had two. The Mean Green hope to improve on a secondary that ranked 61st in the NCAA which allowed 228 passing yards per game. Regardless of the returning starters for UNT, Texas gets the advantage in this matchup as a healthy Ash returns along with Shipley and Marcus Johnson. 13. 1. Protect David Ash Every 2014 season outlook seems is prefaced with "If David Ash stays healthy...." Part of that plan will be executed with an offense reminiscent the 2012 Horns, with a slower pace, heavy motioning, and reliance on the run game. Another step is Ash making a point to protect himself by not taking defenders head on. But the biggest impact will be felt by the offensive line now led by OC/OL coach Joe Wickline. The line will need to show it is a completely different unit than the squad that couldn't withstand three man pressure against BYU last fall, the game in which David Ash frequently scrambled before taking one too many hits, ending his season with a concussion. Ideally, I'd love to see 0 sacks and little need for David Ash to buy time with his feet. And that goal isn't entirely unreasonable to ask of the Horns, as the North Texas defensive front is fairly small. Despite the Mean Green being a top 25 team for sacks in 2013, they lose the majority of the front seven that produced those numbers. Kennedy Estelle will need to show he's a stabilizing force on the left side, and one of the options behind suspended Desmond Harrison will need to step up in his stead, whether it's Darius James, Marcus Hutchins, or Jake Raulerson. 14. North Texas The Mean Green won nine games last year in their first season in Conference USA, so they may not be quite the punch line we’re accustomed to facing. You might recognize head coach Dan McCarney from his time running Iowa State from 1995 to 2006 before resigning and leaving the Cyclones in the incapable hands of Gene Chizik. It only took him three years to win nine games at North Texas, he’s a great coach. On the plus side, their QB is gone, their top two receivers are gone, their starting running back is gone, and their defensive line is gone. We’ll be more basic in this one, in part because we almost certainly won’t lose this game and in part because I can’t be bothered to learn too much about such a team. read more: http://insidetexas.com/news/story.php?article=5038
  15. The last time the Mean Green football team took the field for an actual game was on New Year’s Day. It was a historic day for the team as they hoisted up the Heart of Dallas Bowl trophy after their 36-14 victory over the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Almost nine months later, the team is ready to take the field to try and top their most successful season in program history. And they will start it all off with a match up against the University of Texas Longhorns at Darrell K. Royal Stadium on Saturday. “I know what Texas has on the field. I know what they have in their coaching staff.” head coach Dan McCarney said. “I know exactly what team is going to come out there Saturday night. It’ll be a real tough, physical and talented football team that we have to get ready for to play.” read more: http://ntdaily.com/mean-green-football-to-open-season-at-texas/

  17. Key Offensive Players Returning for Texas: The Longhorns lost six offensive starters from last season, including three in the offensive line, but much of the skill-player production is back. Malcolm Brown rushed for a team-high 904 yards in 2013 and Johnathan Gray was second with 780 despite missing the last four games with an Achilles injury. The receiving corps took more of a hit as Mike Davis, who was second in receptions (51) and first in receiving yards (727), has departed. Davis ended his career fourth on the Texas all-time receptions list (200), fourth in receiving yards (2,753) and fifth in career receiving TDs (18). The receiving corps is headlined by Jaxon Shipley who posted a team-high 56 receptions and was second in receiving yards (589) last season. Last Time vs. North Texas (Sept. 2, 2006): QB Colt McCoy, making his collegiate debut, passed for three TDs and rushed for another, leading Texas to a 56-7 win over North Texas in the season opener for both teams. McCoy went 12-for-19 for 178 yards, connecting with Limas Sweed twice for touchdowns. McCoy hit Sweed for a 60-yard TD in the first quarter and the pair hooked up again midway through the third for a 29-yard score that built the lead to 35-7. Sweed had five catches for 111 yards, Jamaal Charles rushed for 77 yards and Selvin Young scored once rushing and receiving. The UT defense was dominant, holding UNT to 95 total yards in 47 plays. Aaron Ross had a team-high nine tackles and Marcus Griffin chipped in eight. The win marked the 21st straight for the Longhorns, who were coming off a victory in the 2006 BCS National Championship game. 18. Against North Texas, however, Bedford will likely lean heavily on his starters early against an offensive line that returns four starters and 123 starts combined. Due to that experience, he has a healthy respect for the group that head coach Dan McCarney will run out on Saturday evening. "They're going to be physical," Bedford said. "They have four starters back on the offensive line. When your offensive line is good, your offense is probably going to be pretty good. They lost some key players. They lost their two top receivers and lost their QB, but when you have four starters on your offensive line, you better buckle your stuff up. If not, they could run right through us." That healthy respect comes from Bedford having watched what North Texas did against Georgia last season. "They went into Athens and for three and a half quarters, they gave Georgia all they wanted. They ran the football, they changed the pace and tempo, they got back and ran the ball. One thing about Dan McCarney's team is he is not going to beat himself. He's going to play smart, and when he has an opportunity to make a play, he's going to take shots at opportune times." 20. Normally season openers are cupcakes. The big programs invite a smaller school to come to town so it can pulverize its helpless victim. The cupcake limps away with a pocketful of cash. Everyone is happy. News flash: North Texas was no cupcake in 2013. The Mean Green won nine games last season. It is picked to win the Conference USA West division. On paper, this looks to be one of Texas most challenging season opening games in recent memory. Upon closer inspection, however, North Texas is replacing some important pieces. There will be a new quarterback under center. Whoever it is, they will not have faced a team like Texas. Making your first collegiate start on the road in a hostile environment usually doesnt end well. The defensive line must replace four starters. Smaller schools like North Texas dont simply reload at positions. There is usually a gradual learning curve that takes place. This could be a tighter game than people expect. It could also turn into a rout if the Mean Green quarterbacks cant generate any offense. Read more: http://hookemheadlines.com/2014/08/26/2014-texas-schedule-rankings/
  21. North Texas opens its football season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Texas. Here’s a quick scouting report of the Longhorns: 2013 record: 8-5 Key number: 0 — The number of times North Texas has beaten Texas in nine meetings. 1. A new era: Texas will have a new coach on the sideline for the first time since in 1998 in Charlie Strong. The former Louisville coach takes over for Mack Brown, who led the Longhorns to some lopsided wins over the Mean Green later in his career at Texas. The Longhorns beat UNT 65-0 in 2004 and 56-7 in 2006. Strong and his defensive coordinator Vance Bedford worked with McCarney at Florida.
