The first season in the CUSA has been a good one for North Texas...so far. The Mean Green improved to 4-1 in the conference and 6-3 overall following a 28-16 victory over visiting Rice. Surging UNT has now won four in a row with three games to be played and a spot in the postseason within their grasp. The Offense was plain vanilla versus the Owls but took complete advantage of a recovered fumble and a pair of interceptions to score when the opportunity arose. UNT managed just 253 yards with a Antoinne Jimmerson and his eight carry, 62 yard rushing yards leading the fround game while Derek Thompson completed 7-13 for 104 yards and a touchdown and pick. The defense forced Taylor McHarque to the air more then he wanted where he tossed a pair of critical interceptions. I think North Texas is a nice looking squad and is even better at home which has me looking at them in a must win versus UTEP if they want to stay in the CUSA race. The North Texas Mean Green visit MM Roberts Stadium to take the field with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. North Texas is beginning the second half of the season needing a few wins to solidify a postseason berth. It's been so far, so good with the Mean Green winning back to back contests following a 28-13 victory overt Louisiana Tech on the road. A balanced offense and solid defense were the key against the Bulldogs who actually out gained UNT 404-386. North Texas totaled 165 yards on the ground with Brandin Byrd leading the way with 71 yards on 14 totes with Antoinne Jimmerson adding another 50 yards on 14 carries. Derek Thompson completed 16-24 for 221 yards including a 61 yard scoring toss to Brelan Chancellor while the defense also got on the scoreboard with a 56 yard pick six.
