  1. Updated at 1:45 p.m. to include more reaction. The University of North Texas has declined to sponsor its concert stage at the upcoming Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, citing a reallocation of money and the time and energy required by UNT staff to run the stage. In a statement to the Denton Record-Chronicle, Jim Bersheidt said the Division of Brand Strategy and Communications had paid the sponsorship for the popular stage that featured student ensembles throughout the free three-day festival. read more: https://dentonrc.com/news/unt-pulls-jazz-fest-sponsorship-for-october-event/article_2d17e6de-296d-5550-bee7-5f12a54cf9cc.html

  3. Much to my chagrin, I'll have to work in town tomorrow during the game. Fearing a potential local blackout like the UTSA game had, are there any trusted mobile VPNs that are your go-tos?
  4. ...I thought it worth pointing out that Norah Jones is returning to Denton for the first time since she was here at school. We seem to always want to advertise the fact that she was here like twenty years ago, and her face is perpetually on the MeanGreenSports home page. She'll be playing the Pettyfest (a tribute to Tom Petty) on Thursday, and then will take the main stage on Friday. This is the weekend of the away-game at Rice, and the fest will be centered in and around E Oak St. this year primarily on the Travelstead lot. Also East Side will be having their food truck fest that weekend as well. SO! Ya'll have no excuses for that weekend - come up for a music fest, food truck fest, and catch the game at East Side all within a one-block radius.
  5. Hello everybody, UNT alumni here. I'm helping build a video platform which promotes all things Denton (food, activities, businesses, people). I was curious to whether or not you could help out by LIKING our DentonLocal.tv Facebook page? Even 1 LIKE will help out. Thanks so much everybody...and GO MEAN GREEN!

  7. A writer for Making Music magazine wrote that in Denton “Every other person you meet is a musician, and those that aren’t, have a love and respect for music that borders on obsession.” With a population just over 110,000, Denton has over 100 active bands, and because of its small size, musicians here have less ego and more soul. In 2008, Paste Magazine named the city’s music scene the best in the country and according to Citylab, the town’s growing music scene has led to a citywide boom. But unlike other towns, Denton has intentionally built its music scene collaboratively, through projects like DentonRadio.com. When the internet radio station launched, Denton businesses and organizations rallied alongside musicians to financially support the endeavor. Now the station is a unique online platform for local musicians to expose their work, collaborate, and network. Artists with city tiesPat Boone, Don Henley, and Norah Jones passed through in the start of their careers. It also served as the temporary home of bands like Midlake, Bowling for Soup, Eli Young Band, Neon Indian, and Sarah Jaffe. The local polka band, Brave Combo, has won two Grammy Awards (but more importantly, they’ve appeared on The Simpsons). VenuesThere’s 25 venues within walking distance of the town square, and a couple hundred more nearby. But the city’s known for hosting concerts even in donut shops and fast food stops. Dan’s Silverleaf was voted best music venue in 2014. The Abby Underground features free live music and a large selection of beers. FestivalEach year the city hosts up to 20 large festivals and more than 100 smaller ones, but it’s 35 Denton — the town’s response to nearby Austin’s SXSW — that beats them all. The volunteer-driven festival showcases over 200 hundred bands — almost half from Denton — and attracts 10,000+ people. read more: http://matadornetwork.com/trips/10-underrated-american-cities-live-music/?utm_source=Traverse&utm_campaign=7205d588e4-Thursday_Traverse_August_27_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c4e20459d5-7205d588e4-80220449
  8. The end of summer and beginning of the school year means major setbacks for drivers in Denton. In the past week motorists report significant increases in traffic triggered by the return of school and big end-of-the-summer events to town. "It is horrible everywhere you go," said University of North Texas student Charles Atchinson. The biggest problem spots seem to be around the UNT and Texas Woman's University, where the return of students significantly adds to the city's population each year and to the traffic flow on the streets. "6,000 folks in the housing," said UNT Transportation Director Dr. Geary Robinson. "We have another 30-some thousand that are commuting up to us that live in the greater area." That's just at the one school, and though it's not unusual to see in college towns, having two schools really pushes the capacity in Denton. read more; http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Big-Draws-to-Denton-Bring-Big-Traffic-and-Parking-Concerns-323156291.html
  9. "People recognize this is a mainstream issue," said Adam Briggle, 37, vice president of the group behind the ban, Frack Free Denton. Briggle, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of North Texas, said the ban was a last resort. He and other organizers had worked for years to strengthen industry regulations, but the industry found ways to work around them, he said. Texas produced about a third of the country's natural gas last year, the greatest share of any state, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Denton sits atop the Barnett Shale, one of the largest natural gas reserves in the country, with about 275 natural gas wells in the city and scores more on the outskirts. Last year, the Denton City Council prohibited new wells within 1,200 feet of homes, but many existing wells are closer, Briggle said. People recognize this is a mainstream issue. 10. At first glance, the Denton town square is near-saccharine 1950s Americana – complete with baroque courthouse and ice-cream parlour. A closer look reveals a strange mix of the hip and the stodgy in and around the square. Among the brightly-lit burger joints and craft-beer bars, there’s a secondhand bookshop with an extensive collection of vinyl, a junk store with suits of armour in the window, and a vacuum cleaner repair shop. Look beyond the fashionably attired students and you’ll notice a parade of more ragged dressers, many bearing guitar cases. The adjective “dive” doesn’t quite cover the dungeon atmosphere of Andy's Bar on one corner of the square. Yet upstairs at Andy’s is Paschall a speakeasy whose absinthe glasses, antiques and bookcases are more Left Bank than Texas. Denton, Texas the new slacker capital of the southwest, a mantle it took from state capital Austin and Athens, Georgia – two weird college towns that grew up. 11. I have a challenge for you all. You've probably seen the Keep Austin Weird shirts: You've probably also seen the Keep Denton Beard shirts: As a showing of solidarity and focus on beating UT on August 30th, I challenge you to put down that razor and let those beards grow until game day. I mean really, who has time for shaving when our focus should be preparing for the kickoff to the 2014 season. I propose we get our beards started no later than May 30th. 3 months of growth should look pretty dang good. When people ask you about your change in facial follicles, use the opportunity to spread the word of your support for the Mean Green. Tell your friends, alert the media, spread the word... Let's win the challenge of Beard vs. Weird. Note: Ladies, please show your support by pushing the men in your life to participate in this challenge. Don't change your own grooming habits...really not needed.
  12. So besides Cool Beans....where else can a MG fan watch the game in Denton...(for sure, unlike my experience with Hooters and the Tulane game.
  13. A man posing as a firefighter, wearing a stolen fireman's uniform, was arrested in Irving on Sunday just four months after he was arrested on similar charges in Plano. Trrance King, 21, was arrested Sunday at an Irving hospital after he claimed to be a Denton firefighter, according to a law enforcement source. King was wearing a stolen Denton firemans shirt and carrying a stolen portable two-way radio. Firefighters in Denton believe he stole the items when they allowed him to tag along with a fire crew one day last week after he told them he was a paramedic, said Denton Battalion Chief Brian Glenn. The man said his name was Jayden Smith, Glenn said. "He sounded like someone interested in a career with the fire service, Glenn said. But firefighters grew suspicious of his credentials and later learned his name wasnt Jayden Smith and he was no paramedic. "It didn't sink in until later that Jayden Smith is Will Smith's son, so he didn't even make up a good name, Glenn said. He just stole it." 14. While spending last summer in Denton, TX, one thing was made clear to me quickly – I was in a college town. Surely enough, the University of North Texas resides in the heart of the relatively small, but well-populated Denton, which is located just north of its new conference’s headquarters in Irving, TX. During their thirteen-year history in the Sunbelt Conference, the Mean Green made large contributions to the league, and appear to have all of the tools to continue doing so in Conference USA. But despite playing in four separate bowl games and two NCAA basketball tournaments since 2001, UNT is generally swept under the rug at the expense of nearby Texan college football powerhouses. What they’re known for Yes, UNT is obviously in Texas, where people love their guns and football similar to the way North Carolinians value basketball and barbeque. Though, unlike most of the schools in the state, football hasn’t been the breadwinner at UNT recently. Rather, the school has built quite the basketball program that could fit in nicely in C-USA’s new footprint. The Mean Green enjoyed winning seasons in six of their last seven campaigns. In five of them, they amassed at least 20 wins – including in 2010, which was the last time UNT won the conference tournament and subsequently received a bid to the NCAA Tournament. To put this in perspective, East Carolina’s magical 2012-2013 season was the first time the program reached the 20-win plateau since joining Division I.
