  1. With less than two weeks before the start of the 2021 college football season for Maryland football, coach Mike Locksley made an addition to the team's coaching staff. The Terrapins brought in former UTEP offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Mike Canales to serve as an analyst. He has also spent time as the offensive coordinator at North Texas, USF and Arizona. Canales confirmed the hire by updating his Twitter biography. He has experience as a head coach during interim stints in 2010 and 2015 with North Texas where he was credited with starting the popular "Lock the gate" chant. In those two seasons, Canales posted a record of 3-9. read more: https://www.si.com/college/indiana/football/big-ten-daily-indiana-august-27-purdue-jeff-brohm-jack-plummer-shemar-stewart-ohio-state-mike-canales-maryland

  3. So after tonight's performance, is it safe to say that McCarney not only handcuffed Chico's offense, but also the players that could best run it by being a stubborn old man and playing favorites? Just saying, minus the offensive line looking like swiss cheese, that's the offense I was expecting when they said it would be "uptempo". Sure we got our ass beat, but at least it was nice to see a competent qb, and a somewhat effective offense.
  4. “Talking with Coach McCarney on the phone, we weren’t executing in any area of football,” Canales said. “I’d never seen anything like that in 30 years of coaching, had never experienced that. We’ve had bad nights. … I never saw it coming. None of us did. It’s unfortunate that it happened on homecoming, with all our fans here, and we felt like we let them down and let Coach Mac down as a staff, because we work so hard as a staff. We do. “To have that that happen is unexplainable. I can’t put my thumb on it and say, ‘This is the reason it happened.' I can’t give you that answer. I know it happened, and I know what we can do now.” read more: http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=North-Texas-interim-coach-Id-never-seen-anything-like-that-in-30-years-of-coaching
  5. Today was a fruitful one when it comes to UNT football info and tidbits. If you’ve been following along, UNT officials acknowledged that Portland State, an FCS program, will visit Apogee Stadium on Oct. 10 next season. What I didn’t get to on the blog was the terms of the contract. UNT will pay $425,000 to bring in PSU. I also got a chance to sit down with Dan McCarney for a few minutes for the end of the season “State of the Green” evaluation. Here were the key news items: – Everyone who was on UNT’s staff this season and is expected to return (everyone outside of retiring defensive coordinator John Skladany) is still around. McCarney is in the evaluation process of what went on this season and how the Mean Green can improve next year. 6. Andrew McNulty throws a pass during North Texas' spring game at Apogee Stadium. McNulty will compete with Josh Greer and Dajon Williams for the starting job in fall practice. It seems like we have been here before when it comes to UNT football. Lets turn the clock back a little. - See more at: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/summer-football-questions-series-part-ii-how-does-unts-qb-situation-shake-out.html/#sthash.YCOm4JuN.dpuf
  7. On the football front, I am starting to wonder if things are lining up for Josh Greer heading into this weekend’s scrimmage after yesterday’s workout. Greer had a good day in practice and is one of the last three quarterbacks standing along with Dajon Williams and Andrew McNulty. The longtime Bearcats football coach acknowledged Saturday he would interview Tuesday for the position vacated by former Central Missouri coach Willie Fritz, who left to become coach at Georgia Southern after four years at the Texas school. On Sunday, the school announced the other candidates, which include former Delaware coach K.C. Keeler, Virginia offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim, former Texas offensive coordinator Darrell Wyatt and North Texas offensive coordinator Michael Canales. “Each of these candidates meet the criteria we set out when we started our search,” Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams told the Hunstville Item. “The quality of interest for our head coaching position has been impressive. 13. I mentioned this formation in another post. It's when DT is lined up in shotgun and has two backs beside him and one about two yards behind him...sort of forms an "A" I'm not a big fan of it because it allows defenses to tighten up versus spread out... It would seem to me going to 4 receiver sets and leaving a back would force the defense to spread out more and still give you a running option. When we ran it against Tulane we saw waves of defenders coming in and making plays behind the line of scrimmage. I guess the positive is that it leaves a lot of backs to block against a pass rush...gives you more options to run the ball. I'm not a football coach so feel free to educate me otherwise.
