  1. MOSCOW, Idaho (KBOI) - Idaho's Chad Chalich and Deon Watson have been playing football together for almost a decade. You might remember the quarterback-wide receiver tandem winning back-to-back Idaho 5A State Titles while playing for Coeur d'Alene high school. Now, they look ready to continue that kind of success as redshirt freshmen in Moscow. Chad is well on his way to winning Idaho's starting quarterback job, while his favorite target is raising eyebrows. 2. MOSCOW, Idaho Chad Chalich has sidestepped most questions the last two weeks about how hes performed as Idahos de facto No. 1 quarterback. Instead, hes talked about his offensive line, his receivers, his tight ends, his coaches anyone but him, usually. But since the first practice of fall camp, hes told reporters variations of the same thing: Were going to score a lot of touchdowns and win a lot of games this season. He repeated this same line three times Saturday in a four-minute interview. After his superb scrimmage Saturday, it sounded much more convincing. Chalich completed 19 straight passes, several of them deep throws, to finish a remarkable afternoon in which he threw for 414 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns. Two of his TDs went to his former Coeur dAlene High teammate, Deon Watson. The redshirt freshmans 19-of-20 passing effort further solidified his spot atop the Vandals depth chart at quarterback. But coach Paul Petrino still wont say who will start Week 1 against North Texas, and he might not reveal the starter before the first game to keep UNT coaches guessing before Aug. 31. Its not much of a mystery at this point, though. Read more: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/aug/17/chalich-impressive-vandals-scrimmage/
  3. This was my first look at a Vandal practice or scrimmage since spring. Just a few thoughts from what my significantly lacking "football eye" observed. QB: Chalich is clearly #1. There appears to be separation at this position. Chad made a lot of good decisions and threw some very nice passes. He is quite deceptive with his ball-handling skills on the read option. Runs well. Looks to have the best grasp on the offense than any of the others...by far. Davis played fairly well. McCain is elusive and fast. He made several very poor decisions and seemed to be real antsy in the pocket. Possesses a very serviceable arm. Right now, I'd say its Chalich's job RB: Montgomery is fast and elusive. I was really surprised at how well he is doing as a freshman. Its not game time yet...but he seems to have the package. One highlight: He broke free on a pass play down the right sideline and caught a very nice pass for a long touchdown. Brown ran well. A bruiser. Parkins had a real nice afternoon. This kid has a motor and looks like he really loves the game. WR: Dropped several passes. Overall, it looks like we have some nice players at this position. Watson is a lot bigger than I had expected. Not exceptionally fast, but he runs a good route and has good hands. Epps is a burner...real fast and shifty, and good hands. At TE, I was impressed with Homme and Klingenberg (he looks like the most athletic of the bunch). OL: Jesse was back. The kid is big and physical. Has long arms and good feet. Runs well...I think he will impress. Marboe...well, there's a reason he's on the Remington watch list and it shows. The OL had its ups and downs today. But, overall, they appear to be less plump than the last several years and seem to run better. Need improvement, however. DL: Got some nice players here. It looks like we have a good group to rotate at each position. Bradley, Forde, and Keener...studs all! LB: Nice, solid group. We'll have a good rotation here. DB: They have me worried. Too many plays over the top. Let the receivers get behind them too often. Nuff said. Kicker: Struggled on field goals and extra points. Hope this improves! Other thoughts: Ran lots of play. Fast paced. Lots of energy. Coaches are constantly "coaching"...nothing goes unnoticed. The team shows a lot of unity. No trash talking. Better team discipline. Only one silly play on defense (personal foul). Need to take care of ball...too many turnovers. Had several dropped passes. Most impressed: Chalich's grasp on the offense and his versatility. The D swarms to the ball and wraps up. Montgomery and Brown are going to be really, really good. Jesse Davis, Marboe, and Bradley: seem like to guys who could potentially play on Sundays. 4. Chad Chalich threw for 332 yards and ran for another 102 to lead the Silver team to a 56-14 victory as the Vandals completed their spring session with the Silver and Gold game at the Kibbie Dome. "It was good to see some big plays being made," first-year head coach Paul Petrino said. "We kept improving. We got tougher." Chalich, a redshirt freshman from Coeur d'Alene High, was 22-of-40 passing. Senior Taylor Davis was 12-of-23 for 157 yards for the Gold. Jerrel Brown gained 159 yards on 22 carries, and Jahrie Level led 11 receivers with nine catches for 169 yards. Linebackers Marc Millan and Juan Martinez, who like Brown are part of a highly touted transfer group, had 12 and nine tackles, respectively. Jayshawn Jordan added 10. Idaho opens its lone season as an independent at North Texas on Aug. 31. Read more here: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2013/04/20/2542349/quarterback-emerges-in-idaho-spring.html#storylink=cpy
