  1. Dan McCarney received a call a while back from one of the better running backs in recent school history. The conversation ended up being maybe the first step in Brandin Byrd returning to UNT — this time as a gradate assistant coach. McCarney relayed the story recently after the Mean Green’s spring game. 2. Chancellor goes out in style Chancellor had the chance to provide one final impactful performance for the North Texas Mean Green and he did just that in one of college football’s more hallowed grounds. The former Copperas Cove Bulldawg had touchdown runs from 3 and 15 yards out to go along with six catches for 74 yards in a 36-14 win over UNLV at the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year’s Day at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Chancellor helped the Mean Green win its first bowl game since the 2002 New Orleans Bowl and win more games in 2013 than the previous five seasons before head coach Dan McCarney arrived in Denton last season. Chancellor entered the game as North Texas’ leading receiver with 718 yards and four touchdowns on 47 catches. Another former Cove standout, Brandin Bryd also rode off into the sunset with a win as he rushed for 52 yards on 20 carries against UNLV. He finishes the season with 1,075 yards and 11 touchdowns. 3. TULSA, Okla. — Brandin Byrd ran 26 times for 251 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday to lead North Texas over Tulsa 42-10. Byrd scored his three touchdowns consecutively over the second and third quarters to extend the Mean Green lead to 35-10. Byrd’s second touchdown went for 91 yards. “It was a great job by him,” North Texas coach Dan McCarney said of Byrd’s performance. “We gave him one more carry and he broke a long one [to get to 1,000 yards]. I’m proud of him.” North Texas (8-4, 6-2 Conference USA) took the lead for good, 14-10, in the second quarter when Mike Marshall blocked a Tulsa punt and Jarrian Roberts returned it 8 yards for a touchdown. Antoinne Jimmerson scored the lone points of the fourth quarter on his second rushing touchdown. Jimmerson added 85 yards and two touchdowns to the Mean Green running game. UNT outrushed Tulsa 372-80. 4. That 91 yard Brandin Byrd TD run goes out to all of the people that think we run too much. I will agree, though . . . There was a LOT of running on that play.
  5. University of North Texas running back Brandin Byrd has been selected as The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the eleventh week of the college football season. The Conference USA running back turned in a career best performance with 18 carries for 202 yards and two touchdowns in the Mean Green’s win over UTEP 41-7. Coach Dan McCarney said, “You love to see the consistency from Brandin Byrd, he is one of the most unselfish guys we have. He’s one of the toughest players, one of the most respected players we have in this program.” The win makes North Texas bowl eligible for the first time since 2004. The win also keeps North Texas atop the Conference USA West-Division standings with an overall record of 7-3 and a conference record of 5-1, half a game up on Rice. 6. In their years as teammates, Brandin Byrd and Brelan Chancellor have made numerous trips to various high school and college stadiums to represent both Copperas Cove and the University of North Texas. But, there is one thing that the duo has yet to do, go bowling. At least in terms of the college football postseason. They aim to change that this year as the senior running back and wide receiver look to lead the Mean Green (3-3, 1-1 Conference USA) to its first bowl berth in nearly a decade. “The main goal for my senior year is to try and get us to a bowl game because we haven’t been to one since we’ve been here,” Byrd said. “That’s the key goal and to do whatever I need to do to help my team win ball games.” “I feel like I owe this university a lot,” Chancellor said. “They gave me a chance to play football and get a great education.” North Texas hasn’t made a bowl appearance since the 2004 New Orleans Bowl. The Mean Green’s last bowl win came in 2002 when it beat Cincinnati 24-19 in that same bowl game. The Mean Green would be bowl eligible with three wins in their last six games. UNT is currently in third place in the Conference USA West Division behind co-leaders Tulane and Rice. The Mean Green visit Louisiana Tech on Saturday. 7. The guys over at the Morning News put out a slide show/list of the top running backs in Texas college football today. A UNT player made the list that brings up an interesting debate. The Morning News has Brandin Byrd listed as the 15th-best back in the state. I won’t go through the whole list. Go ahead and click through it. What is up for debate is this — Just who is UNT’s best back? Byrd is a power guy who picked up 860 yards at 4.2 yards a pop and scored four touchdowns last season. He looked a lot quicker in the spring. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/05/unt-player-makes-list-of-top-texas-running-backs.html/
