  1. I was sitting with Jerry Briggs of the San Antonio Express-News at Conference USA media day this week and heard UNT coach Dan McCarney talk a little about the Mean Green’s loss to UTSA. Mac was gracious as always and gave Jerry some material that he turned into a nice little story on where everyone was picked in the preseason poll. 2. OXNARD, Calif. -- In some ways Lance Dunbar still carries himself as an undrafted running back from North Texas. It doesnt matter that this is his third training camp with the Dallas Cowboys. It doesnt matter that he already has a role as the third-down back. It doesnt matter that he could be a core player on special teams. I wouldnt say I like it that way better, but it kind of pushes me, made me work harder, made me the guy I am today, Dunbar said. Dunbar is not established the way DeMarco Murray is established. He had just 30 carries last season and caught just seven passes before suffering a knee injury last Thanksgiving against the Oakland Raiders. But it was what Dunbar did in that game -- 12 carries, 82 yards; one catch, 12 yards -- that has many intrigued about his role in 2014. 3. Just went to UNT night at the Rangers game, and because the game was abysmal, I spent most of my time trying to hunt down one of those green North Texas Rangers hats. I didn't get my ticket in time to get a voucher. I was hoping someone on here had an extra or was willing to sell me theirs? I know there were a lot of alumni there. Anyone?
  4. REGINA — Is it cooler to be a professional football player or an Olympic bobsledder? “They’re two different things,” says Johnny Quinn, a former Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver and a member of the United States’ 2014 Olympic bobsled team. “Walking into Lambeau Field on Monday Night Football, having my first reception on Monday Night Football — what a special moment. And walking in the opening ceremony, representing the United States, wearing the red, white and blue, competing on Olympic ice — what a special and unbelievable moment. “They’re different but both still so special.” Along with playing for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, the University of North Texas alumnus suited up for the Buffalo Bills and helped the Riders win a West Division title in 2009. read more: http://www.leaderpost.com/entertainment/Quinn+enjoying+sporting+life+after+football/9982732/story.html
  5. University of North Texas leaders say they've long toyed with the idea of adding beer vendors to Apogee Stadium and other campus venues. Like many college sports venues across the country, no alcohol is allowed in the Mean Green's football stadium. But Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said it's been an ongoing discussion. He said he has watched closely as other venues tackle the topic. "It's a trend that we've watched across country," he said. "We've seen that increasingly happen in stadium settings." Villarreal said there are some real benefits to beer sales, such as new profits. But he also said beer sales could actually have a positive effect on safety. 6. Smatresk said his four-year presidency at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas taught him how to deal with financial hardships when the state cut $74 million in funding. “Compared to some of the things I’ve had to deal with in the past, I’m going to call this ‘garden-variety,’ and that doesn’t mean it’s not significant. So I’m not trying to diminish what has occurred. What I am telling you is that we put a good team together and we know how to get ourselves back on track,” Smatresk said. Three finance officials resigned in light of the findings. The university has since hired a new vice president for finance and administration, an assistant vice chancellor for financial planning and reporting, and a vice chancellor of finance. Smatresk said he is ready to work through the woes, including a lowered bond rating by Moody’s Investors Service. In an April press release, Moody’s stated it had given UNT a rating of Aa2 and that the school’s outlook went from stable to negative. The university’s financial crisis was cited in the explanation of the change. 8. MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - He made waves at McKinney High School as a star football player. He still holds the title of all-time leading receiver at the University of North Texas. But athlete Johnny Quinn went from local football legend to the United States bobsled team, and then became a worldwide sensation after punching his way out of a locked bathroom door in Sochi, Russia. Quinn is now helping other high school athletes transition to college as founder of The Athlete Watch. During his time in high school, Quinn thought that his performance on the field would help him pay for college. He and his family expected that scholarships would come. He remembered, “We were told from all the experts that if you score touchdowns, if you make all the plays and win all the awards, you’re going to get scholarships.” Read more: http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2014/05/14/johnny-quinn-helps-teens-transition-to-college/
  9. My wife always watches the 10 pm news and she yelled at me, "Hey Rick Villarreal is on the news, hurry!" Sure enough there was RV being interviewed and a real nice segment about UNT football getting top 25 votes! The good effects of this bowl win just won't stop! GMG!
  10. Check out #27.... Kind of tongue in cheek, but still fun to see

  12. For the last eight years there’s been a slumbering giant in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex that has finally stretched its arms, let out a big yawn and started stomping around a little. The North Texas Mean Green, led by former Iowa State Cylcones head coach Dan McCarney, took home an impressive 36-14 win over the UNLV Rebels on Wednesday in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, showing they’re back on the map in the Lone Star State. In the early 2000s North Texas had a solid run of success under former head coach Darrell Dickey, winning four consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships from 2001-2004 and playing in four consecutive New Orleans Bowls over the same stretch, but winning only one. The stretch of 2005-2012 was a disastrous one for the Mean Green as things regressed under a number of new coaches, and the program floundered to a 13-58 record overall, effectively negating any momentum created by the success of the early 2000s. Plenty of optimism surrounded the arrival of McCarney to Denton, and with just cause. The energetic and fiery Iowa native is slowly moving things back in the right direction, and has compiled an 18-19 record in three seasons for North Texas. Obviously, these aren’t earth shattering numbers, but the 9-4 finish this season and a noted dedication to recruiting local high school talent over the traditional focus on junior college fill-ins has several implications for the program, and the overall balance of power in college football in the state, going forward. 13. What it means: This is a huge win for North Texas. It marks the Mean Green's third bowl win in school history and first since 2002. It had been a while since they've even been to a bowl game (2004 was their last trip) but Dan McCarney and Co. appear to be headed in the right direction. After finishing 4-8 a year ago, finishing 9-4 this season is a nice turnaround for the Mean Green. Read more: http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/92226/instant-analysis-north-texas-36-unlv-14
  14. Having had plenty of experience with hardship over the years, North Texas looked adversity in the eye on Wednesday afternoon and swatted it and UNLV aside. The Mean Green (9-4) of North Texas overcame a sluggish start but in the end celebrated its new age on New Year's Day with a new slogan: bowl champions. Game MVP Derek Thompson passed for 256 yards and two touchdowns on 21-of-30 passing, Brelan Chancellor scored two touchdowns rushing and North Texas' defense allowed only 70 yards in the second half of a 36-14 victory over UNLV (7-6) on Wednesdayat the Cotton Bowl. UNT outscored the worn-out Rebels 29-7 in dominating the second half of the second bowl victory in school history. "I dreamed of the day when I took this job that these seniors could go and win a bowl game," said UNT coach Dan McCarney, who in three seasons has turned around a program ranked near the bottom of FBS. "They are unbelievable examples of how you play the game and how you win a football game. "I think this is a program that's clearly on the rise." On Wednesday, they had to overcome bad penalties and two dropped would-be interceptions in the first half with a determined effort in the second half, starting with the defense forcing a three-and-out on the opening possession of the third quarter. Thompson then threw his first touchdown pass, to Drew Miller from 7 yards, to cap a 12-yard drive that gave UNT its first lead and an opening. 15. East Side Social Club will be doing a victory party at 4pm after everyone gets back from Dallas. Lets get out there and support the mean green and bring back a win and then come celebrate afterwards. Hope to see you all there!
  16. This is from a Cory McCartney article on FOX sports... 24. UNLV remains perfect in bowl games, with QB Caleb Herring (25 TDs) sinking North Texas in the Heart of Dallas. The Rebels haven't been to a bowl since '00 and are in their fourth since 1984, but are 3-0 all-time. The complete article: http://msn.foxsports.com/south/story/35-bold-predictions-for-college-football-s-bowl-season-121913 He's definitely made some bold claims like Duke topping the Aggies (even though Manziel will go off) and Rice getting to 11 wins by beating MSU. I'm not reading too much into into this article, since he seems to be picking upsets for the sake of writing this article. Let's prove his ass wrong. GO MEAN GREEN!!!
  17. In a New Year’s Day matchup at the Cotton Bowl stadium, the Rebels (7-5) will play their first postseason game since the 2000 Las Vegas Bowl. “We do kind of mirror each other,” fourth-year UNLV coach Bobby Hauck said. “Sort of like the guys at North Texas, we’ve had to kind of believe in ourselves when maybe there wasn’t a whole lot of others that could, or should. It’s just tremendously rewarding to be where we are right now.” North Texas (8-4) has won six of its last seven games in its 100th anniversary season of football, and its first in Conference USA. The bowl comes in the third season under coach Dan McCarney, who took over a program that had gone 13-58 the six seasons before he arrived. “This is validation for all the hard work put in by this team and the leadership of this senior class,” McCarney said. 19. When Neal Smatresk took the helm of UNLV four years ago, Nevadas largest university was embroiled in turmoil. Its former president had been ousted by the Nevada Board of Regents amid conflicting management styles and controversy. Moreover, UNLV was suffering from one of the worst recessions in American history, slashing programs and faculty while raising tuition and fees on students. Smatresk could have weathered the economic storm with his head down, hatches battened down. But he didnt. Instead, Smatresk dreamed large and created a transformative vision that many say gave the university and Las Vegas a reason to hope in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Neal carried us through a tough time, said Regent Cedric Creer, a Las Vegas advertising executive who chaired Smatresks evaluation committee earlier this year. Neal has done a good job, despite the budget constraints. He was the right guy at the right time for UNLV. Smatresks sudden announcement Wednesday that he intends to leave UNLV to become the president of the University of North Texas near Dallas came as a great shock to Southern Nevadans. Most understood the reason Smatresk gave for his decision, enumerated in a short letter to faculty sent mid-afternoon Wednesday. Smatresk, a Texas native who was educated and worked for two decades at Texas universities, wanted to live and work closer family in the Lone Star State, particularly his two children and a newborn granddaughter. Yet amid increasing turnover in Nevadas education leadership, some speculated that perhaps inadequate education funding, the states unique geopolitical strife or the slow pace of change had contributed in part to Smatresks decision to leave. Smatresk, who was in Texas on Wednesday, didnt return calls for comment. Whatever the reason, Smatresk will be leaving UNLV and Nevada with a legacy of big, half-finished dreams that a new leader will be entrusted to shepherd to completion. UNLV and state leaders say Smatresk will transfer his vision to capable hands: a strong team of university administrators handpicked by the president. However, most officials admit their charismatic and well-liked leaders departure represents a major loss for the aspirational university. 20. This is my first attempt at making some 3D helmets! Hope you like them!
  21. Beginning of 2nd half vs. UTEP
  22. I had a meeting this morning with an NT alum (class of 1998) at CB Richard Ellis, as I've been working to get into the business. He told me that there aren't many Mean Green in the world of commercial real estate (in Dallas at least) for a variety of reasons. So the question I pose to you is, why do you think that is? Anyone know brokers, property managers, etc, in the industry? For what its worth, he also had no idea the team was 4-3 this year.
  23. The Bill Simmons creation gives the Green some love.... In other news, what the heck is Coach Mac doing?
  24. Myself, like a few buddies I know, I have some commitments that unfortunately preclude us from going to the game in person. However, that doesn't mean we wont be watching the game. For those who can't make it to Denton, there will be a small crowd at Ringo's in Plano at the Shops at Legacy, and we are working on an Uptown location (maybe Christie's? Maybe Pop Diner- great place for kids fyi) Just a heads up. GMG. (B)eat Rice. God Bless America. I love lamp.
