I was on TJ Taylor's twitter feed and ran across this... Play Maker @BeGreat_8 My bro @JordonFinch coming to UNT too. That's also another person to add to the UNT-OU connection. Jordon Finch @JordonFinch @BeGreat_8 yessir I dont know much about him and couldn't find his rivals page. According to OU's roster he was a RS Junior so im not sure how much playing time he would have left. Wondered if anyone else knew about this?

I have taken a bit of a break from my post spring series on UNT’s roster, but now that I am back from vacation it’s time to get back at it. I started off with some positions where UNT has a lot to be confident about — quarterback and offensive line come to mind. Today, we take a look at an area of concern, UNT’s cornerback spot. UNT struggled at times last year at cornerback, despite having some experienced players — Royce Hill was a four-year starter and Steven Ford played two years for the Mean Green. By the middle of the year, freshman Freddie Warner had become a starter only to be lost to a season-ending injury. The number that sticks out is that UNT ranked last in the Sun Belt in passing defense with an average of 265.8 yards allowed a game on the season. There is no doubt UNT had its problems in the back end. I just wonder how much of them were directly attributable to the cornerback spot. Some of them? For sure. The whole problem? Probably not, especially if you take a closer look at the team. UNT was torched by Houston’s Case Keenum, Tulsa’s G.J. Kinne and Arkansas State’s Ryan Aplin, three really good college quarterbacks. But when it came to Sun Belt Conference play, UNT actually ranked third in pass defense with 215.0 yards allowed a game. SHREVEPORT -- To be drawn back into coaching, Gary DeLoach needed the right opportunity. His longtime relationship with Bradley Dale Peveto and the Northwestern State coach’s need for a defensive coordinator to replace Brad Laird turned out to be just the chance DeLoach needed. DeLoach, who sat out last season, will be back on a college football sideline in 2012 after Peveto hired him to replace Laird on the Demons staff. DeLoach’s hiring is subject to approval by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors. “I’d been wanting to get back in,” said DeLoach, who was defensive coordinator at North Texas State from 2008 through 2010. “I was waiting for the right situation. There’s a drop off after the top three teams in the projected standings, but Louisiana-Monroe, Western Kentucky, North Texas and Troy are all capable of pushing for a fourth-place finish and a winning record. The Warhawks are led by junior quarterback Kolton Browning, who should be healthy after dealing with a sternum injury most of the 2011 season. The Hilltoppers are on the rise, but must replace star running back Bobby Rainey. The Mean Green is in a similar position to Western Kentucky, as they have to replace running back Lance Dunbar, but should have an improved passing attack in 2012. Troy was the conference’s biggest disappointment last year and need a big year from quarterback Corey Robinson to get back in the mix for the conference title. For me it is nose tackle Tevinn Cantly. He was recruited by Dodge as a project who came on late in his high school career (perhaps he didn't play until his junior year?). He had that one thing you can't teach -- size and a fair amount of speed but was raw. Dodge or more likely Mendoza tried to play him at defensive end which was one of many personnel mistakes they made. He underachieved in his first two years and suffered some injuries. I was ready to write him off but last season he started to really show me something. The guy is 6-4, 300 and pretty quick. Something mentally clicked in him last year...his game seemed to get more physical, more intense... We know that Big Dick Abbé is starting to come on and Boutwell is already a key contributer. I just have this feeling that Cantly could surprise us and have a big year.

I’m back from a short vacation and am ready to resume my post-spring blog series on UNT’s roster position-by-position by evaluating the Mean Green’s offensive line, but first a fun story. Vicky and I went to Portland for a few days and picked up a car at the airport. The guy from Enterprise looked at my license and said, “Denton, home of the Mean Green.” Long story short, we got to talking and it turned out the guy went to Troy for a couple of semesters before graduating from a school in Florida. (Insert joke about the Troy guy working at Enterprise here) Anyway, just thought that was interesting. But back to the matter at hand. UNT’s offensive line was a big strength last season. Lance Dunbar ranked third in the Sun Belt with 1,115 rushing yards on the season and UNT allowed just 16 sacks, a total that also ranked third in the league. What is a huge positive for UNT going forward is that most of the group is back and some young players gained experience in the spring that will allow them to provide added depth. The lone player UNT lost who played a significant role was tackle Matt Tomlinson, who was a first-team All-Sun Belt selection. JJ Johnson was expected to start at center, but was hurt in the season-opener and never really played a major role outside of being a great leader. Just perusing the roster and I find the following Juco recruits: CB - DQ Johnson - Iowa Western CC: A junior that they needed at a critical position. QB - Brent Osborn - Northwestern Miss CC: A junior. After a rough soph year with few opportunities Ozzy came up strong in the Spring. I think Chico felt like they needed an insurance policy with Thompson's injury. TE - Andrew Power - Arizona Western CC: A senior. With Dodge refusing to sign tight ends, Power was a need sign for Mac. I think he's been a solid addition as a run blocker and has All Sun Belt potential. WR - Chris Bynes - Coffeyville CC: A RS Senior. A good player who overcame an injury; got a medical redshirt year - and came to be a major contributor as a possession receiver with big play potential. Dodge loaded up on jucos at the tail end of his tenure and they are gone now. Mac seems to be very high school focused and that's not a bad thing. I did a quick glance of the Belt rosters to see what they were doing. Keep in mind, I am looking at Juco or Community College transfers only, not FBS or FCS transfers as those are a different animal and are probably worth a separate discussion. For fans of these schools feel free to make corrections and I apologize for any errors made. It will be interesting to see how these strategies play out over time. While we are on the topic of recruiting, it should be interesting to see how the announcement that UNT is on the way to Conference USA helps the Mean Green this year. The Sun Belt Conference has been great for UNT, but there is little question that playing in C-USA where the Mean Green will have some regional rivals fans and recruits care about will help matters quite a bit. Having made it through Spring training- I decided to take a look at the incoming signing class and identified 8 players that due to positional need, injury or other factors could make an immediate impact for us this season.

Less than a month after it was announced that he and another former four-star recruit were leaving Texas, Darius Terrell has found himself a new collegiate football home and, conveniently enough, it doesn't require moving out of state. The tight end, who will play wide receiver with his new team, confirmed to the Denton Chronicle that the new team will indeed be North Texas.
