  1. Broken Arrow coach David Alexander said during spring practice about Roland, "I’ve never had a player come so far as Demeco has. When he was a sophomore when he first got over here after wrestling I didn’t think that he was going to stick it out, sometime after wrestling in April he just decided he wanted to be a good football player. Demeco has transformed his body, he weighs 290, looks like 265. ... He's going to be a breakout guy, there's no doubt about it. He had a great winter, he looks great." 3. As we are on the very cusp of signing day 2015, I just wanted to take a moment and give thanks to BillySee for his outstanding coverage of North Texas football recruiting. This takes a lot of time and hard work on his part. I think the amount of detail and insight he has shared about this recruiting cycle has been fantastic and I know it is greatly appreciated by the Mean Green fanbase. As some of the older fans such as myself begin our journey towards that shiny Apogee in the clouds, it is encouraging to know we have young fans like Billy who share in our passion for UNT and Mean Green Athletics. GMG!

  5. The University of North Texas will host a free college recruiting seminar for high school and middle school athletes, their parents, high school coaches and counselors on Saturday. It will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Ken Bahnsen Gym. “The University of North Texas is proud to be a partner in this initiative to provide high school recruits a no-strings attached event to be further educated about the recruiting process,” said North Texas Athletic Director Rick Villarreal. “We strongly encourage all student-athletes grades 8 through 12 to take advantage of this presentation and get the in-depth information that can help them make informed choices not only about the recruitment process but their futures in general.” Read more: http://highschoolsportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/11/free-recruiting-seminar-offered-saturday-at-unt.html/
  6. Strong, 53, becomes the first African-American coach to oversee a men’s sports program at Texas. His first order of business, Strong said is to build a program based on “physical and mental toughness,” with minimal focus on recruiting services’ rankings of prospects. “Let’s not get caught up in the 5-stars. Let’s not get caught up in the 4-stars. Let’s get caught up in the football players,” said Strong, whose predecessor earned the nickname “Coach February” for his heralded recruiting hauls but struggled in recent years to translate that to on-field success. Texas finished 30-21 in Brown’s last four seasons and did not win as much as a Big 12 title in that stretch after claiming a BCS national title in 2005 and competing for another in 2009. 7. San Diego State defensive tackle Dan Kottman has decided to leave the program. The 6-foot-1, 245-pound sophomore, was one of only three true freshmen who played for SDSU last year. He played in eight games, and would have been the primary backup behind Sam Meredith this year if he hadn't injured his shoulder. Kottman had shoulder surgery in the spring to repair two tears and a torn right labrum and rotator cuff. It was a major surgery that set Kottman back about six months. But his season came to an end when he had to have surgery on the shoulder again in October to clean up scar tissue. read more: http://m.utsandiego.com/news/2013/Nov/02/aztecs-dan-kottman-transfer-defensive-tackle/
  8. In one of the interesting moves of the last couple of weeks in Texas college football, Baker Mayfield is leaving Texas Tech for Oklahoma. I mention it because there was some talk about Mayfield considering UNT. I asked around and never picked up even a hint that Mayfield was ever involved with UNT. And so now the UNT quarterback field is set for spring practice. So who will replace Derek Thompson? Here is the field in the order I expect this to turn out... 9. And in other news, Rivals.com rated Shaquel Jackson, a defensive lineman out of DeSoto, who joined teammate Johnavhon Grahm in committing to UNT this summer. The website has Jackson rated as a two-star prospect. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/07/sunday-morning-recruiting-notes-2.html/
  10. I swung through the Don January golf tournament today and picked up a few random notes and tidbits. There were 43 teams this year. The event raises a ton of money for UNT athletic scholarships. UNT picked up $13,000 at the long drive event alone. Head coach Brad Stracke mentioned that UNT was ranked 155th when he arrived and is hanging around the top 30 now. Stracke also talked a little about UNT’s goal to raise $1.8 million to add a putting green and short game facility at Trophy Club. I saw UNT women’s basketball coach Mike Petersen. Tony Benford was gone by the time I arrived at the end of the day. Dan McCarney is still recovering from bypass surgery and was not able to be there to speak at the end of the event. I have not had a chance to mention it yet, but today is the first day of UNT’s big push in football recruiting in the Dallas area. UNT’s assistants were all out on the road, seeing coaches and players. Mike Canales had just come back off the road. Defensive coordinator John Skladany was also there. 11. Wide receiver Hunter Jarmon (Waco, Texas/Midway) has four of his five official visits set. That fifth school will be set at a later time in the fall – if at all. Jarmon, one of the premier receivers in central Texas, said he will make officials to Kansas on Sept. 15, Minnesota on Sept. 22, Iowa State on Sept. 29 and Oregon State on Nov. 3. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound receiver, the son of former Baylor running back James Jarmon (1984-87), has offers from all four schools, in addition to Missouri, North Texas, New Mexico, SMU and Tulsa. “They’re all on my list right now, but anybody can be in the final run,” Jarmon said. “These schools have shown me the most interest.” Read more: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/post?id=17065&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fblog%2fncfrecruiting%2fon-the-trail%2fpost%3fid%3d17065
  12. They came from across the state, from Lake Travis to Denton, with some considered as top college prospects, like West Mesquite defensive back Will Earley, while others will be fighting for starting spots on their high school team this fall. What they all shared Friday night was a decision to give up one of their last free Friday nights before the beginning of fall practice at high schools across the state to spend a few hours at “Friday Night Lights.” North Texas’ final football camp of the summer attracted approximately 300 players, along with several dozen coaches and parents who watched workouts under the lights at Apogee Stadium. “We had great numbers and outstanding high school kids here,” UNT head coach Dan McCarney said. “It was a lot of fun and another step in the direction we want to go with this program. We already had over 900 kids at the camps that we had in June and had another 300 for a one-night camp.” Players went through position drills and worked with UNT’s assistants, who got a better look at some of the players they are targeting in recruiting after staging satellite camps across the state earlier this summer.
