  1. This came up during the podcast last night as Benford mentioned it during the Ft. Worth Caravan. Does Hardwick have a teammate from Houston with offers from Texas Tech and Baylor? Any other idears?

  5. For the first time ever, all three schools hired new coaches in the same off-season. You’d have to go back to 1975 to find the last time two of the schools hired new coaches the same year, much less three. And that’s great news for high school basketball in Dallas, Fort Worth and all the suburbs that surround the two hubs of the Dallas area. The stakes have been raised. All three coaches — Larry Brown at SMU, Trent Johnson at TCU and Tony Benford at North Texas — plan to make local talent an emphasis in their recruiting. “I was shocked when I saw the talent here,” Brown said. “I’ve seen some kids who are pretty special. I don’t know that we have a chance [at them], but I don’t want to lower the bar for us.” Don’t look for any of the three new coaches to lower the bar. Brown has the cachet. He’s the only coach in history to have won an NCAA and NBA title and has already been enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. What recruit isn’t going to answer the door when Larry Brown comes a knocking? Johnson has been selected coach of the year in three different conferences — the WAC (Nevada) in 2003, Pac-10 (Stanford) in 2008 and SEC (LSU) in 2009. He’s taken teams to five NCAA Tournaments and reached a pair of Sweet 16s. What recruit isn’t going to answer the door when Johnson comes a knocking? This is the first head coaching opportunity for Benford, but he arrives in Texas with a slight edge over Brown and Johnson. His primary recruiting responsibility over the last 20 seasons as an assistant at New Mexico, Arizona State, Nebraska and Marquette has been the state of Texas. 7. DENTON, Texas- The North Texas athletics department will begin a four-city tour to help celebrate the historical announcement that the Mean Green will compete as a member of Conference USA in all sports beginning in 2013. This event will be held in conjunction with the previously-scheduled Coaches Caravan which was already scheduled to make stops in Dallas, Plano and Ft. Worth in addition to the kickoff event in Denton Tuesday, May 8. In addition to the Conference USA news, this will be the first time that fans, alumni and the general public will have a chance to meet the newest members of the Mean Green head coaching family. New men's basketball coach Tony Benford has been in Denton for less than two weeks and is already making news. New head women's basketball coach Mike Petersen came to North Texas after a successful career as the head coach at Wake Forrest. In addition to head football coach Dan McCarney, all three will be at each tour stop to socialize with guests. Each tour stop will feature family-friendly activities with special guests including Scrappy, and members of the cheer and dance teams. The events are FREE and open to the public. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided, and a cash bar will be available. The tour schedule is listed below. 12. I want to personally thank Coach Bill Foy for all of his hard work and contributions here at North Texas. Now its time to put the right assistants in place and keep the program heading in a positive direction. I think it is just a matter of time before Coach Benford names Rob Evans his Associate Head Coach and primary assistant. From what I have learned, Evans is like a father to Benford and it would just make sense that he rejoin him at North Texas and support him in this great opportunity. I think this is a big win for us as Evans was a primary recruiter for Texas Tech during the Gerald Meyers days of success and went on to lead Mississippi to the NCAA tourney as a head coach. Evans is currently at TCU and he is known as a fantastic coach and recruiter and would quickly earn the respect of the entire team. Both SMU and TCU would love to have Evans but from what I hear Evans left as head coach at Arizona State because the AD stabbed him in the back and as part of the exit he received a LOT of zero's in his check so for him its not all about the money. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Coach Evans will take this job because I think he could really help us build something special here! GMG
  13. Report: North Texas forward Tony Mitchell to return to school Raphielle Johnson Apr 29, 2012, 11:23 PM EDT Leave a comment In the aftermath of Johnny Jones leaving to take over at LSU, North Texas freshman forward Tony Mitchell nearly left school to enter the 2012 NBA Draft. According to Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com, Mitchell will return to school for his sophomore season. New head coach Tony Benford will have one of the early favorites for Sun Belt Player of the Year back on campus, and the Mean Green are talented enough to reach the Big Dance in 2013. Benford, who was previously an assistant at Marquette, recruited Mitchell according to Goodman so it’s possible that the prior connection helped Mitchell come to this final decision. The 6-8 forward played in just 23 games last season but was a very tough matchup for opponents, averaging 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for North Texas. The Mean Green reached the title game of the Sun Belt tournament, where they fell to Western Kentucky. Mitchell’s return puts North Texas right there with Middle Tennessee for preseason favorite status, with the Blue Raiders having to replace forward LaRon Dendy.
