UNIVERSITY PARK — The NCAA pronounced the SMU Mustangs guilty by association Sunday. Guilty of association with the new American Athletic Conference. There were five basketball teams from the fledgling AAC in the final Associated Press basketball poll last week: No. 5 Louisville, No. 13 Cincinnati, No. 19 Memphis, No. 21 Connecticut and No. 25 SMU. Four of those teams were extended invitations Sunday to participate in the 68-team NCAA Tournament. SMU was not and will settle for the National Invitation Tournament, in which it will host UC Irvine in a first-round game Wednesday night. “At the end of the day, I don’t think they felt our conference was worthy of having five teams in,” SMU coach Larry Brown said. Biggest Potential Sleeper Game- In somewhat of a rivalry game, SMU and North Texas will clash in what should be a dandy. North Texas was a surprise this season, going 9-4 and winning the Heart of Dallas Bowl. UNT does lose a lot of experience from that team, but head coach Dan McCarney has recruited well and has the program on the upswing. Bragging rights will be on the line in this one. UNIVERSITY PARK SMU football coach June Jones needs a victory Saturday against Central Florida for his team to become eligible for its fifth straight bowl. A loss would leave the Mustangs with their first losing record since Jones debut season of 2008. Either way, Jones appears safe in terms of job security. He said Wednesday that he will decide after the season on an offer from SMU to extend his contract. Jones has 19 months (through the 2014 season) remaining on his current deal, which pays about $2 million annually through June 2015. "We've talked about it", Jones said when asked about his contract status. "They wanted to extend me, but I just dont like dealing with that during the season". "I've got two years really on my contract". "I'll probably end up extending it, but well talk about it at the end of the season." SMU athletic director Rick Hart declined to comment, citing the schools policy of not talking about contract negotiations. You can expect the school to move quickly after the season to avoid uncertainty during recruiting. It seems unlikely that SMU officials would change their minds regarding the contract renewal offer, given Jones unprecedented run of success. But there is no buyout clause in the final year. 7. SMU: The Mustangs still have one game left, but keep an eye on this situation. Despite much improved play in the second half of the season, there's a lot of unease about the direction of the program, especially in the wake of a 34-0 loss to Houston on Friday. That left SMU 5-6 and needing to beat American Athletic Conference leader UCF next weekend to reach bowl eligibility. Though SMU has not been inclined to fire June Jones he is well-liked, and such a move would be both expensive and distasteful for school president Gerald Turner it will be interesting to see how high the heat gets turned up. This is one situation where both sides may be unhappy. Is SMU fully committed to doing what it takes (especially on the academic side and non-conference scheduling) to help build the program and push it to the next level? On the other hand, why hasn't SMU's investment in Jones yielded the financial gains expected from things such as ticket sales? It was a pretty big weekend for UNT in terms of recruiting. The Mean Green hosted JUCO guard Carrington Ward and SMU transfer Jalen Jones began considering what his next stop will be. Heres the situation at this point Jones sat down with his former AAU coach Erven Davis, of Dallas Showtyme, one of the premier programs in the country, and talked about where his next stop will be. Southern Methodist Univeraity’s support for selling beer at its big games on campus is the latest break in a long dry spell at most Texas schools. The University of North Texas at Denton and the University of Texas at Austin also are considering lifting bans on alcohol sales in the stands at football and basketball games. For now, only the University of Houston does so. The public and private universities considering the change say it could boost attendance and raise revenue. But several other Texas schools — including A&M, Baylor and Texas Christian University — remain opposed. Some cited the potential of underage drinking and rowdy, booze-stoked behavior. For SMU, its proposed expansion of alcohol sales — already permitted in the football stadium’s luxury suites — is backed by many student leaders, alumni and city officials. (Staff Photo/Brad Loper) As much as I might complain about the price of beer at the American Airlines Center, its tough to imagine watching an entire hockey game without one. Or two. Ish. You might say the same about a Mavericks game or a Rangers or Cowboys game in Arlington. Beer, overpriced or not, goes with sports. This applies no matter where you might be watching, but especially if youre not at the arena/ballpark/stadium. So I forget sometimes that its much more miss than hit for college sports fans and am reminded only when I read that another university is considering adding alcohol sales to its on-campus home games. This came up at the University of Texas last spring, and now it appears to be a going concern here locally at SMU. I notice in Athlon two deep that they have Walling (Lake Highlands) as the backup center. I did not see Sam Rice from Coppell in the two deep. Before someone barks about why am I posting SMU stuff, please note that we have them on the schedule for like 12 years starting next year so I am starting to look over their roster more than before. Also both of these guys were originally committed to us and I was interested to see how they are faring. SMU has a brutal schedule this year BTW and their transfer Texas QB is a senior (like DT). It will be interesting to see how they fare this season against some tough competition.

It had been a long and arduous climb back for the Mustangs since the NCAA shut down the football program with its death penalty in 1987. Then came SMU’s departure from the Southwest Conference in 1996 and low-mileage stops in the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA. But with the announcement in December 2011 that SMU had accepted an invitation to join the Big East, the Mustangs were back on the map. Football rivalries loomed with rising powers Boise State and Louisville plus basketball rivalries with the likes of Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette and Notre Dame. An automatic conference bid in the BCS, a league basketball tournament in New York City and millions of dollars in television revenue figured to enhance SMU’s marriage to the Big East. June Jones had taken the football team to three consecutive bowls, and the Mustangs hired legendary coach Larry Brown to resurrect the basketball program. SMU envisioned a glorious, uplifting future when the school hired Rick Hart as athletic director last July. Then came the nightmare. SMU president R. Gerald Turner said the Mustangs remain committed to the Big East. They officially become members in July. But over the last few months, the Big East has lost Notre Dame, Rutgers and Louisville, as well as the league’s seven non-FBS schools, which are forming their own conference. And the Big East’s negotiations for a television deal continue to drag on. Expectations of significantly lower conference payouts than expected have contributed to some of the exits. More Big East defections — if that’s possible — and expansion elsewhere could force SMU to reconsider. The Mustangs have been mentioned as potential candidates for the Mountain West. With its numbers in flux, the Big East must work on its divisional makeup. If San Diego State decides to honor its commitment, the Big East’s most likely move could be continued westward expansion. The A$M QB is really impressing me with his athleticism. Gilbert has to get a better touch on his ball; until he does SMU will struggle in that offense.

I usually don’t mention every time a break does not go UNT’s way in football recruiting, but it does seem worth posting that Red Oak tight end Jeremiah Gaines committed to another school today. Gaines is headed to SMU, a school for which most UNT fans have a deep hatred. I thought UNT might have a chance when Gaines cut his list of schools he was still considering to six and UNT made it. He spent a lot of time talking with Dan McCarney after UNT’s Friday Night Lights camp. Gaines also came by practice this spring with his family.
