  1. The North Texas Mean Green achieved their crowning moment, defeating conference rival UAB to secure the first NIT title in program history. The championship springboards the Mean Green into an offseason of massive upheaval. In an instant, their coach was gone, though that wasn’t much of a surprise. Grant McCasland had the inside track for the Texas Tech job for some time and quickly snatched when he was done leading the Mean Green to glory. North Texas wasted no time filling the job, handing it to longtime associate head coach Ross Hodge. He’s been a big part of what McCasland has built and the program shouldn’t regress too much under the first-time head coach. That transition is far from the biggest the program is going to have this offseason. The Mean Green will no longer be Conference USA Rivals with the Blazers; instead they’ll be rivals with them in the AAC. The AAC will be virtually unrecognizable next year. Can North Texas fill the void and take the conference crown in its first year as a member? read more: https://bustingbrackets.com/2023/04/03/north-texas-basketball-mean-green-win-aac-first-year/
  2. RUSTON – After finishing 2018 with seven straight wins, Louisiana Tech will carry that streak into the new calendar year of 2019 when they take on North Texas on Thursday night at 7 p.m. inside the Super Pit. The matchup will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required) with Hank Dickenson and Paul Valamides calling the action. Fans can also listen to the Voice of the Bulldogs Dave Nitz and Jack Thigpen call the game through the LA Tech Sports Network on KXKZ 107.5 FM (Ruston), KJVC 92.7 FM (Mansfield) and KRMD 100.7 FM/1340 AM (Shreveport) as well as on the Louisiana Tech X mobile app. LA Tech (11-3, 1-0 C-USA) opened league action with a convincing 71-56 victory over travel partner Southern Miss this past Saturday. It marked the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Bulldogs began C-USA action with a win. With the win, the Bulldogs ended the month with a perfect 7-0 record, marking the first time since 1971 (and only the fourth time since 1950) that the team went undefeated in December. Sophomore forward Anthony Duruji poured in a season-high 23 points against the Golden Eagles, connecting on a career-tying four three-pointers. It marked his team-leading 10th game in double-digit scoring. Sophomore guard Jacolby Pemberton also connected on a career-high four triples (only had two total last season). 3. As North Texas prepared for its CBI opener at South Dakota, Grant McCasland had a problem. The Mean Green were limping when they accepted the tournament invite, having lost seven of their last eight games. McCasland had a dynamic, slashing playmaker in sophomore point guard Ryan Woolridge but the court had shrunk around him. UNT had shot just 28.3 percent from three in the previous four games, and McCasland needed to create space for his lead guard. As the morning shoot around unfolded, junior guard Michael Miller missed shot after shot. McCasland couldn’t take his eyes off of him. “I saw him staring at me and I was thinking, ‘what’s going on?’” Miller said. What was going on was that McCasland had come up with an idea to fix his team’s sagging offense. The first-year UNT coach called over Jon Trilli, his Director of Basketball Operations, and bounced the idea of him. It was out there. Miller, who had made just three of his 23 three-point attempts, would be given the green light from deep against a tough Coyotes’ defense. And he’d have to shoot them with his right hand, which for most players would go unsaid. Except Miller was a left-handed shooter. Miller was told to switch to his normally non-dominant hand the rest of the shootaround. He immediately made six shots in a row, missed one and then made four more in succession. That’s when McCasland called him over. “I told Mike, ‘here’s the deal: I’m going to start you tonight and I want you to shoot eight three pointers and I don’t care if you make them,’” McCasland said. Miller didn’t hit the quota, but it paid off. That night, he scored 19 points and went 4-5 from three, more than doubling his season output from distance. It helped the Mean Green knock off a 26-win South Dakota team, and started them on the path to a CBI championship. read more: https://www.midmajormadness.com/2018/7/13/17551840/michael-miller-switch-hands-shooting-north-texas-unt-basketball-mean-green-mccasland-cbi-champions
  4. QUICK HITTERS Ryan Woolridge's nine assists gives him 205 dimes on the season. He is now just three assists shy of the tying Walter Johnson's single-season record of 208 in the 1976-77 season. UNT hit 14 3-pointers on the night to extend its single-season program record to 290 made 3-pointers on the season. The 14-for-20 performance marks the fourth-best three-point percentage in a game (73 percent) in program history. The 14 makes ties for the fifth-most in program history and is the most since December 2007. North Texas used some big runs to control the night, as a 14-2 run early on was capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Jorden Duffy and Michael Miller. Toward the end of the first half, UNT went on a 14-0 run over four-and-a-half minutes to build 42-20 lead. UNT opened game on 13-2 run, Jacksonville State didn't have first field goal until nearly six minutes into the game. At one point in the first half, UNT made 14 of 15 field goal attempts to help spur a 57-point first half in which UNT shot 70 percent from the field and made 10 of 14 shots from beyond the arc. The last time UNT scored 90 or more points against Division I opponents in three straight games was 1997-98. It marks first time since the 1990-91 season that UNT has beaten three straight Division I opponents by scoring 90 points or more. The win marks the Mean Green's third three-game (or more) winning streak of the season, which is the most since 2010-11, when there were also three such streaks. UNT had five players score in double figures - Roosevelt Smart, Jorden Duffy, DJ Draper, Zachary Simmons and Ryan Woolridge - marking the first time since an overtime loss to Western Kentucky on Feb. 15 that the Mean Green have had five or more players reach double figures. The Mean Green shot 71 percent from the charity stripe and are now 11-0 this season when shooting better than 70 percent from the foul line. 5. Been trying to compile a list of NT players that play overseas- I know Odufawa plays (or played in) Ukraine and Franklin plays somewhere in Eastern Europe, but where do others play? Does Eric Tramiel still play in Israel?
  6. Saw that a Joel Wright from North Texas was picked in the third round of the NBADL draft this past weekend Joel Wright? I assume they meant TX State Wish some of our guys got drafted in the D-League- other than T-Mitch, think Tristan Thompson was the last one
  7. Janis Peterson has left the North Texas women’s basketball program after one season to return to California, head coach Mike Petersen confirmed Wednesday afternoon. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/janis-peterson-leads-unt-hoops-program.html/

  9. Other area athletes who will compete at the Division-I level include Brownwood place-kicker Matt McCrane (Kansas State), Comanche distance runner Maci Schulte (Texas Tech) and Albany softball player Kelli Schkade (Missouri). Early’s Aubrey Horton (girls basketball) was undecided at press time, but could eventually choose the University of North Texas. 10. Of the other mid-majors in the field, it is unlikely that any will advance to MSG. Delaware should get by Penn, but taking down Virginia will be difficult. And Cleveland State will likely run into Michigan in the second round. One other thing to watch in the field: North Texas has Alabama-Huntsville and then a likely date with Kansas State. It will be a nice two game showcase for sophomore Tony Mitchell, who scored an eye-opening 9.45 HW30 as a freshman. The Mean Green could definitely put on a show without a lot of preseason hype. 11. The last piece of Creighton's scheduling puzzle might not be the elite program some Bluejay fans long to see their team play. But getting North Texas to open the season in Omaha excites coach Greg McDermott. “I think North Texas as an opener will turn out in the end to be a great game for us,” McDermott said. “And it's not going to be an easy game. They're going to be very talented, and there's a reason they had a hard time filling their schedule, too.” Creighton announced its 2012-13 schedule Thursday. Most of the Bluejays' nonconference opponents were already known, but McDermott and his staff had been working on landing a possible high-profile opponent for the season-opening game. McDermott said the Bluejays were prepared to open against a non-Division I opponent, which would not have impacted their RPI, had a suitable first-game foe not been found. North Texas falls somewhere in between. The Mean Green, a member of the Sun Belt Conference, compiled a No. 200 RPI ranking while finishing last season with an 18-14 record. Six of the losses came in the final 13 games after two of the team's top three scorers, Chris Jones and Jordan Williams, were declared ineligible. They are back with the team, as is sophomore Tony Mitchell. 12. North Texas added one final piece to what is expected to be among the best teams in school history Tuesday when T.J. Taylor made Denton the next stop in what has been his long and winding road in college basketball. The former Denison standout began his career at Oklahoma, played one season at Paris Junior College and spent a few weeks at Marquette this summer before returning home. New UNT head coach Tony Benford recruited Taylor at Marquette and convinced him to follow him to Denton. Taylor, a 6-foot-4 guard, announced his decision on his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon in a message that mirrored what LeBron James said when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat. “I Terrance Taylor will be taking my talents to the University Of North Texas for my last 3 years of college basketball,” Taylor wrote. UNT can only hope Taylor’s stay in Denton will unfold in a similar fashion to James’ tenure in Miami, which won the NBA title this spring. This much is certain, Taylor will be another highly regarded addition. 13. T.J. Taylor, a former Denison standout who spent time at Oklahoma and Marquette, is on an official visit to UNT today. A UNT source confirmed that the 6-3 shooting guard is on a visit to the school Thursday afternoon. Taylor said earlier in the day via text message that, “nothing is set in stone” as far as where he will continue his college basketball career. New UNT head coach Tony Benford is a former Marquette assistant and recruited Taylor to the Big East Conference school. Taylor arrived at Marquette in early July and left the school in a matter of days to return to Denison. “We are in complete support of his decision and we wish him all the best in his future as a student-athlete,” Marquette coach Buzz Williams said in a statement after releasing Taylor. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/07/taylor-on-campus-today.html/
  14. Taylor, 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, was entering his first season at Marquette and had three seasons of eligibility remaining. He averaged 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season to help Paris to a 23-7 record. He was a third-team All-American pick who signed with Marquette in November. Williams said at the time: "History has proven that the guys we have signed with three years of eligibility remaining have been really good for us, and I have great belief that T.J. will be next in that line. "Similar to the guys in the past we have signed with three years left, T.J. fits into what we do with our perimeter players. He is a switchable and has the versatility we rely on from those guys on both ends of the floor." A Marquette source said Wednesday that Taylor, a native of Denison, Texas, was homesick. The source noted there were posts on Taylor's Twitter account referring to personal issues back home. In addition, Tony Benford no longer is on the Marquette staff. Benford, who was the primary recruiter for Taylor, was named head coach at North Texas in April.
