  1. 8. Sam Houston Even though Sam Houston ranks near the bottom of Conference USA, don't be surprised if this team easily exceeds this prediction. For starters, coach KC Keeler is 85-27 with the Bearkats, including a FCS title in 2020. Also, the team wisely redshirted a handful of players with an eye to '23 and beyond as it made the move to FBS. Defense should be the strength of Sam Houston's first team at the FBS level, as this unit boasts preseason Athlon Sports second-team All-C-USA selections in Markel Perry (DL), Trevor Williams (LB) and Jordan Morris (CB). The offense has question marks up front (only one returning starter) and needs to find an answer at quarterback (potentially North Texas transfer Grant Gunnell). 2. This could have been awkward. For Seth Henigan. For Ryan Silverfield. For the entire Memphis football program. Grant Gunnell could have come to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium this week as the North Texas starting quarterback, just a few months after transferring from Memphis, an exit indirectly shepherded by Silverfield, who gave Henigan the first team snaps in spring practice over Gunnell. It could have been a referendum on Silverfield’s choice ‒ and Silverfield – if Gunnell returned to Memphis with North Texas and out-played Henigan. But it’s none of that, and not simply because Gunnell isn’t expected to be the North Texas starting quarterback Saturday. Henigan is playing too well to play the what-if game. 3. I am picking QB Grant Gunnell as my adopted player this year. After every game I will come on here and give a recap on how he played and his passing stats and whatnot. Go GRANT!!! LINK TO 2022 ROSTER FOR PLAYER ADOPTIONS AND PICS.
  4. 32. Grant Gunnell, North Texas (from Memphis) Gunnell is battling Austin Aune in a close battle for the starting job. The former Memphis and Arizona quarterback could give North Texas' offense a needed spark through the air. read more: https://athlonsports.com/college-football/college-footballs-top-50-impact-transfer-quarterbacks-ranked-for-2022
  5. 8. Grant Gunnell, North Texas Gunnell is listed here for North Texas, but the former Arizona and Memphis signal-caller has to beat Austin Aune for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. Fall practice is Gunnell's first opportunity for snaps in the Mean Green uniform after spending the 2021 season and '22 spring at Memphis. Gunnell did not record a snap of playing time with the Tigers due to injury, but he previously played in 12 games at Arizona (2019-20) and threw for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns to only three picks over 248 attempts. The sample size is still relatively small, but Gunnell's accuracy has been on point (66.5 percent for his career). North Texas averaged under 200 passing yards a game last fall, but coach Seth Littrell hopes for Gunnell to be the missing piece and spark the downfield attack. read more: https://athlonsports.com/college-football/conference-usa-quarterback-rankings-2022
  6. Former St. Piux X quarterback Grant Gunnell transferred to North Texas from Memphis to kickstart the Mean Green passing attack. Will he be the answer UNT needs to turn the offense around? The college football season in Texas starts a week earlier than normal with a Week 0 matchup between North Texas and UTEP. To celebrate us making it through another off-season, we’re counting down the 50 most important players in Texas every day until Aug. 27. The list isn’t necessarily about which players are the best, though talent plays a major factor in most important. No. 38 Grant Gunnell: North Texas junior quarterback The History Gunnell was one of the most prolific passers in Texas state history during his TAPPS career and was a finalist for All-American Bowl Offensive Player of the Year after the 2018 campaign. He threw for 16,108 yards and 195 touchdowns – both state records – during his four seasons on varsity. Gunnell only threw 28 interceptions in 1,471 pass attempts. He added 1,621 yards and 28 touchdowns as a runner. The Skillset Potential was never a concern for Gunnell, who was a one-time pledge to Texas A&M and a four-star recruit in the 2019 class. He’s a pure pocket passer with size and a big, accurate arm. The 6-6, 228-pound Gunnell also never struggled to produced, evidenced by his prolific prep career. Gunnell was an All-American Bowl participant and a member of the Elite 11 Finals. The talent is there, especially at the G5 level. The concern with Gunnell is durability. read more: https://www.texasfootball.com/article/2022/07/20/the-lone-star-50-no-38-grant-gunnell-should-improve-the-mean-green-offense?ref=article_preview_img
  7. After a tough 1-6 start to the season, the Mean Green won their last 5 regular season games and earned a bowl bid in 2021. Head coach Seth Littrell has posted a 37-38 record in his 6 seasons in Denton, with 4 bowl appearances (and 4 bowl losses). Things have taken a downturn in the 2 seasons following star Quarterback Mason Fine’s graduation in 2019. However, a new season brings new hope, and some new faces on the North Texas campus are hoping to provide some stable success for a fan base that has waited a long time for it. Here are some new additions to keep an eye on in 2022 and beyond. 2022 Recruits Grant Gunnell, Quarterback North Texas will be the third team Gunnell will suit up for, but he’s hoping it will be the first team to give him a chance to shine. Coming out of high school, he received offers from top tier programs such as Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama. He signed to play for Arizona, and during his first two years as a Wildcat he saw only a little playing time, albeit with big results. In 20 appearances, he threw 1864 yards and 15 touchdowns, with only 3 interceptions going against him. However, he could not lock down a starting job going into his third season, so he transferred to the Memphis Tigers where he spent two seasons without seeing a single snap. He again entered the transfer portal, and will be calling Denton home for the final two years of his eligibility. The talent is obviously there, as is the pedigree. All he needs is a chance to show he can put it together as the man in charge. This may be difficult however, as he will need to usurp returning starter Austin Aune as QB1. Aune, himself a former transfer from Arkansas, seemed to have the job all but locked up going into 2022. However, the addition of Gunnell has made this less certain. At the very least, it will be interesting to see if the addition of Gunnell pushes Aune to a new level of production as the starter. Alternatively, it is a possibility that Gunnell takes the reigns at some point and is finally able to show why he received offers from those top tier programs coming out of high school. Either way, it’ll be fun to see how this QB controversy shakes itself out. Cam Robertson, EDGE Robertson is one of the highest rated recruits to ever commit to North TexasCam Robertson is a player that North Texas recruited heavily throughout his Senior year. As Robertson told Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle, “They contact me two or three each week and were always checking up on me”. Robertson, who is 6’4″ and 230 lbs, finished his senior season at Plano High with 11.5 sacks, and more than 30 TFLs. As it stands, Robertson is the 7th highest rated recruit ever signed by UNT according to 247 Sports. With the loss of star defensive lineman Grayson and Gabriel Murphy to UCLA, the front seven is needing some new blood. Robertson certainly shows he has the pedigree to take the unit to another level as he grows in Denton. Read more: https://gridironheroics.com/north-texas-mean-green-newcomers-to-watch-in-2022/
  8. We’ll See North Texas: Seth Littrell has acquired a stable of arms at the quarterback position. The question is, can any of them come remotely close to the production that Mason Fine provided the Mean Green? Austin Aune has had the task of immediately following Fine and in two seasons has been pedestrian — throwing for 3,641 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He enters this year’s QB battle as the incumbent, but will be pushed by former four-star North Carolina signee Jace Ruder, well-traveled Grant Gunnell who arrives in Denton after stops in Tucson and Memphis and former Louisiana Tech QB JD Head. read more: https://www.underdogdynasty.com/platform/amp/2022/6/28/23177556/conference-usa-preseason-position-previews-quarterback-college-football-cfb
  9. his is the first entry in the series that will focus on underrated offense across the FBS landscape. North Texas has produced quality play but the consensus is underrating this group. This might come across as a weird inclusion at first as they ranked 88th in EPA per play last season and 80th in success rate but things change, and Seth Littrell’s Mean Green has upside. Ranking first in players per game, the offense should have plenty of plays to support production if things break right. Additions in the transfer portal highlighted by Grant Gunnell could lead this offense to the next level in 2022. Quarterback Adding quarterback Grant Gunnell in the portal can make or break the season. AARP member Austin Aune has been competent for North Texas, but Gunnell gives the offense a ceiling we haven’t seen in Latrell’s tenure. In 2021’s regular season, Aune ranked 109th among qualified quarterbacks in total EPA with -16.66. The loss of Jyaire Shorter hurt the passing offense but ultimately, Aune was holding the unit back. He started or played the majority of snaps in 11 games. In those games, he had more than 240 passing yards once and under 125 yards five times. His average of 181 yards in games, ranks among the worst in the nation for a team that isn’t primarily an option team. To add, Aune had only 9 touchdowns in these 11 games Comparatively, Gunnell has been productive when starting despite limited reps up to this point. In his career, he’s had significant action in five games at a Power 5 level. In the matchups where he’s thrown more than 20 passes, he’s averaging 272 yards and 2 touchdowns per contest. Accomplished as a true freshman and sophomore, Gunnell also played a struggling Arizona team against quality defenses. In 2021, he was injured before the season for the Memphis Tigers, resulting in Seth Henigan’s breakout. It’s a small sample for Gunnell but it’s clear he represents upside for this offense. read more: https://campus2canton.com/underrated-offenses-north-texas/
  10. Grant Gunnell was supposed to be the recruit that would justify Arizona hiring Kevin Sumlin. Instead he’s looking for a third college team in four years. The former Wildcats quarterback, who transferred to Memphis shortly after Sumlin was fired in late 2020, has re-entered the NCAA transfer portal. Gunnell never saw the field for the Tigers, suffering a season-ending injury last August. Because he’s already transferred once, and was immediately eligible, he’d have to sit out a season unless he received a waiver. With Arizona, Gunnell started seven games in 2019-20, splitting the starting job with Khalil Tate as a true freshman and then starting four of five contests in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He threw for 352 yards and a touchdown on 29-of-44 in his collegiate debut, a win over UCLA in Sept. 2019 that earned him Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. read more: https://www.azdesertswarm.com/2022/4/30/23049946/arizona-wildcats-grant-gunnell-memphis-tigers-ncaa-transfer-portal-injury-sumlin-khalil-tate-fisch
