  1. Game: LSU vs. North Texas at Tiger Stadium Date: September 1 at 6 p.m. Television: ESPNU North Texas coach Dan McCarney is quite familiar with his LSU counterpart Les Miles. Both played in the Big Ten Conference at the same time in the 1970s - McCarney at Iowa and Miles at Michigan. Both were head coaches for a four-year stretch in the Big XII Conference in the early 2000s - McCarney at Iowa State and Miles at Oklahoma State. Then, McCarney was an assistant coach at Florida from 2008-10 while Miles was the head coach at LSU. Now, McCarney will begin the second year of his rebuilding job with the Mean Green with a game against Miles' LSU team in Tiger Stadium. McCarney knows what he is up against in his team's opener against the Tigers. "I know the type of program Les has down there at LSU," McCarney said. "He has done a great job. But, I can't worry about who they have as a first-round or second-round (NFL draft pick). We have to be able to go down there and not give in to adversity. 2. They came from across the state, from Lake Travis to Denton, with some considered as top college prospects, like West Mesquite defensive back Will Earley, while others will be fighting for starting spots on their high school team this fall. What they all shared Friday night was a decision to give up one of their last free Friday nights before the beginning of fall practice at high schools across the state to spend a few hours at “Friday Night Lights.” North Texas’ final football camp of the summer attracted approximately 300 players, along with several dozen coaches and parents who watched workouts under the lights at Apogee Stadium. “We had great numbers and outstanding high school kids here,” UNT head coach Dan McCarney said. “It was a lot of fun and another step in the direction we want to go with this program. We already had over 900 kids at the camps that we had in June and had another 300 for a one-night camp.” Players went through position drills and worked with UNT’s assistants, who got a better look at some of the players they are targeting in recruiting after staging satellite camps across the state earlier this summer. read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20120729-football-unt-gets-another-look-at-players.ece

  4. In a surprising twist, the timing has worked out perfectly when it comes to our post-spring football series. The final part — coaching — is today. Monday is Sun Belt media day. One can argue back and forth about where the impact of coaching is most evident on the college level. I have always been of the opinion that college football is not really an Xs and Os game. It’s a Jimmmys and Joes game. The coaches who succeed are not always the ones whose strengths are game plans, calling a game or making the perfect adjustment. More often than not, the coaches who win are the guys who get the talent to campus, can keep the top players on the field and have them playing well together. In that sense, UNT went from the outhouse to the penthouse last season. Dan McCarney came in and totally revived the program. The players gradually bought in and played hard until the end of the season, even when they didn’t have anything to play for against Middle Tennessee.
