  1. Boca Raton, Fla. (9/29/12) - The North Texas defense forced three turnovers, and Zach Olen made two field goals to lead the Mean Green football team to a 20-14 win against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night at the FAU Football Stadium. North Texas improves to 2-3 and wins its first conference game of the season. FAU falls to 1-4 and 0-1 in the Sun Belt. The Mean Green has won three in a row against the Owls, including two on the road. The game was one of momentum shifts as North Texas took an early 10-0 lead in the first half. Derek Thompson threw a touchdown pass, and the Mean Green defense recorded an interception, a fumble recovery and four sacks in the first two quarters. Another Thompson touchdown throw kept the pendulum on the Mean Green side through most of the third quarter. In a span of 72 seconds beginning at the end of the third quarter, FAU scored 14 points to get back in the game and swing the momentum back its way. A long Mean Green drive midway through the fourth quarter that resulted in an Olen field goal extended the North Texas lead, and the Mean Green defense held off the Owls for the remainder of the game. Olen redeemed himself against FAU after going 0-for-3 against Troy last week. The field-goal kicker went 2-for-2 in the game, including a season long of 48 yards. Thompson threw for 251 yards, a season best. He completed 18 of 30 passes, including a long of 68. The junior recorded two TD passes, a 68-yard throw to Brelan Chancellor and a 14-yard pass to Drew Miller. On its second possession of the third quarter, North Texas took advantage of good field position. A 39-yard punt by Will Atterberry was downed by NT at the FAU 5-yard line. The Mean Green forced a three-and-out, and North Texas started its drive from the FAU 42-yard line. A 21-yard run by Jeremy Brown helped set up a 14-yard touchdown reception by tight end Miler. It was his second career touchdown catch. The catch gave North Texas a 17-0 lead. FAU scored 14 straight points in a span of 72 seconds to cut the Mean Green lead to three points, 17-14. 2. BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- Derek Thompson threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns in North Texas' 20-14 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. It marks the third time since 1997 that North Texas has been 2-3 after five games. The Mean Green was also 2-3 in 2003 and 2005 and had started 1-4 or worse in every year since 2005. Thompson's first touchdown pass, a 68-yard strike to Brelan Chancellor, opened scoring and Zach Olen's 48-yard field goal gave North Texas a 10-0 advantage. 3. “Here’s what I see after four weeks: I think special teams-wise, we’ve at least competed or won every game, minus the first game,” he said. “Our coverage teams have been tremendous; our return teams have been at least comparable to what the opponents have been giving us. The punt game has really flipped the field a number of times and our kickoff team has done a great job giving up nothing, so that’s a definite improvement over a year ago.” Two other areas that Pelini is excited about is penalties and turnovers, at least the lack thereof by the team. “We were a highly penalized team a year ago,” said the coach “We’ve got to be, statistically-speaking, a highly-rated team in terms of number of penalties, and we’re operating efficiently (there). Turnovers were a big deal to us going into the season. We had those miscues early, but we’ve gotten better every game in terms of just taking care of the ball and ball security. I’m looking at marked improvements in certain areas.” There are three areas Pelini pointed to that still do need improvement. “I want to see us get out of the gates faster and I want us to be a better tackling football team, and I want to be able to run the ball more consistently,” he said. “Those are the things I want to see more improvement on. But I’m seeing improvement in areas, and I keep saying that’s what this year is about, laying foundations for playing our kind of football. I knew that this was going to be a long haul, it wasn’t just going to be a quick fix. It’s not going to happen overnight.” North Texas will come to Boca Raton with the exact same record of 1-3 overall and an 0-1 mark in the Sun Belt. And their season schedule to date looks very similar to that of the Owls: They lost to two top-ranked opponents (No. 3 LSU and No. 8 Kansas State), won over a smaller school at home (34-7 over Texas Southern), and lost their conference opener (14-7 last week to Troy). Kickoff on Saturday is at 5 p.m., and the game can be heard on fausports.com or seen on ESPN3.com. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or calling the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS. 4. The Owls play North Texas in their second home game of the season Saturday. FAU is 1-3 and lost its only Sun Belt game so far, 31-17, at Middle Tennessee. North Texas has the same overall and conference record, losing 14-7 to Troy on Saturday. Both teams’ lone win is over a Division I-AA opponent. The Mean Green is one of three teams in the Sun Belt averaging fewer than 20 points. FAU is last at 12.8 below South Alabama at 14.2 and North Texas at 19.0 “Offensively they’ve been moving the football,” Pelini said. “They have really good backs. They have a good offensive line. They know who they are and their identity and they put you in some difficult situations with some formations. I do think they’re a quality football team. They could have very easily won that game last week.” Read more: http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/faufocus/2012/09/24/conference-play-will-allow-florida-atlantic-coach-carl-pelini-to-better-gauge-progress/#more-1791
  5. TROY — Jimmie Arnold made a strategic decision after his Troy teammates/roommates had teased him and Troy co-eds had ignored him. The offensive lineman had gone two years without cutting his hair, long enough that it drooped down past his shoulders, regularly dripped into his sink and adversely affected his social life. After grayshirting with the Trojans in 2008 and redshirting in 2009, Arnold made a break from his past in 2010. Out came the scissors. “I just needed a change,” Arnold said. “Not many girls liked it, so I had to go with the clean-boy look.” His follicles no longer get noticed on the field, but Arnold is making up for it with his play. An injury put him in the starting lineup last weekend against Mississippi State. Now, he’s fully entrenched at right guard when the Trojans (1-2) play at North Texas (1-2) on Saturday. “He’s finally getting his time and he’s showing it,” center Kyle Wilborn said. Wilborn was quite familiar with hippie Arnold. They roomed together for a couple of years, long enough for Wilborn to judge Arnold as messy, but “not too bad.” Read more: http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/article/20120918/SPORTS0404/309180019/Troy-football-Arnold-loses-locks-gains-starting-job?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Sports|p
  6. 9/16/2012 By ARNE GREEN Salina Journal MANHATTAN - The lights were on, but Bill Snyder had a sinking feeling nobody was home. Whether his Kansas State Wildcats were gazing south toward Norman, Okla., or simply looking past North Texas, the signs were ominous. "I hated playing this one at night because it's been on my mind very definitely for a long time and certainly was all during the course of the day," Snyder said after the No. 15-ranked Wildcats stuttered and sputtered for more than a half Saturday before pulling away to a 35-21 victory at sold-out Snyder Family Stadium. "I never try to predict those things, but it wasn't hard to see it coming. "If you don't prepare yourself well, most anything can happen. We weren't very well prepared." Though the Wildcats (3-0) swore North Texas had their full attention, next week's Big 12 opener at No. 5 Oklahoma clearly cast a long shadow. "These games are hard to prepare for," defensive end Ryan Mueller said. "It's sometimes hard taking teams that aren't conference teams seriously, but we know that these types of games are usually dogfights." North Texas definitely took the fight to K-State early, scoring first and holding the Wildcats to minus-1 yard in the first quarter. But Tyler Lockett kept it from being a complete disaster. 7. I'm just an alum and fan -- but I felt something tonight that I haven't felt in the entire time I have been following this program which dates back to 1988.... You can't expect to go into a hostile environment like #15 K-State and expect to be able to make mistakes or get any calls in your favor. That said, I can honestly say after tonight - I feel better than I have since I can possibly remember (including 2002 when QB Andrew Smith was alive and we had won a bowl game against Cincy). We performed well against the #15 team in the country tonight. In fact, I would argue we won the line of scrimmage against them. There were two reviewed calls that I knew would end up against us -- you can't expect that to happen on the road on a paycheck game against a Big 12 team and Big 12 refs. We are missing a few key pieces -- however, this team is so different from what we have become accustomed to. I applaud Coach Mac for building something special here. I applaud the players for an outstanding effort against. If you are a North Texas fan you have to be thrilled about the change that is so apparent in this program right now. If there is one clear message from the game tonight it is that Coach Mac knows how to build a program. I shudder to think what this team will look like in just a couple of years. The change is now clearly been displayed on a national television broadcast cause believe me the OU fans and even the UT fans were watching this game to scout K-State If you are not on it now - -- you better get on the band wagon soon because it will be very full before the end of this season. The future is very VERY bright for this Mean Green football program!!! GMG! This post has been promoted to an article

  9. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is pleased with his team's progress through the first two weeks of the season. North Texas coach Dan McCarney knows his squad needs to improve or it could be in for a long Saturday night in Manhattan, Kan. The 15th-ranked Wildcats will try to close out their season-opening homestand with a sixth straight victory over the Mean Green, who are going for their best start since rejoining the FBS 17 years ago. Disappointed at his team's slow start in a 51-9 season-opening win over FCS opponent Missouri State on Sept. 1, Snyder was glad to see the Wildcats (2-0) get on the board early in last Saturday's 52-13 victory over Miami. Senior quarterback Collin Klein had two of his three rushing touchdowns in the opening 12:08 and led Kansas State to scores on its first four series. The Wildcats also registered their first five sacks of the season while holding the Hurricanes to 262 total yards, 156 fewer than Kansas State allowed in the opener. "We're a work in progress," Snyder, a former North Texas assistant, said after the Wildcats' 10th consecutive September victory. "But we're vastly improved." If Klein can continue to improve as a passer, the Wildcats could make some noise when Big 12 play begins Sept. 22 at Oklahoma. Arguably one of the best running quarterbacks in the country, Klein completed nine of 11 passes against Miami for 210 yards, including a 27-yard TD to sophomore wide receiver Curry Sexton. 10. BATON ROUGE -- The North Texas football team isn't expecting a particularly warm reception when it takes the field Saturday in Tiger Stadium. But visiting a Southeastern Conference powerhouse for the second consecutive season, the Mean Green know what's in store for them. In week three of last season, the Mean Green suffered a 41-0 drubbing at the hands of then-No. 2 Alabama, but North Texas junior linebacker Zachary Orr said his team learned not to be intimidated. "We tell the young guys to avoid the crowd and don't get caught up in the hype or the big stadium," Orr said. "It's still a 100-yard field, 11-on-11 just like we played in Pop Warner. We still have to go out there and play the game." North Texas senior wide receiver Chris Bynes said he enjoyed the SEC environment playing Alabama last season, but is making sure he and his teammates don't get too caught up in the crowd. "We know (the fans) are going to be loud and talk a lot of smack to us," Bynes said. "We've got to be united and come out with a win." Mean Green junior quarterback Derek Thompson, who completed 11-of-22 passes for 80 yards against Alabama a year ago, said a year of starts under his belt prepared him for the challenge he'll face this Saturday. 11. The North Texas offense has the benefit of returning nine players with starting experience, including junior QB Derek Thompson who threw for 1,759 yards and 11 TDs last season despite completing just 57.7 percent of his pass attempts. Wide receivers Brelan Chancellor and Chris Bynes are back after combining for 74 catches, 899 yards and 8 TDs in 2011, although both will need to elevate their level of play considerably as the team tries to find a replacement for leading rusher Lance Dunbar (269 carries, 1,115 yards, 10 TDs). Hoping to fit the bill will be a slew of skilled, if unproven runners, although the only ones with any experience whatsoever are junior Brandyn Bird (20 carries, 83 yards, 1 TD) and senior Jeremy Brown (5 carries, 23 yards). The UNT defense allowed more than 30 points and 429 total yards per contest last season, so shoring things up at the point of attack is paramount to the team achieving better results this time around. At first glance, the unit lacks playmakers. But all isn't lost as junior linemen Brandon McCoy (44 tackles, 4.5 sacks) and Ryan Boutwell (28 tackles, 2.5 TFL) provide some stability, while last year's top tackler, junior LB Zachary Orr (74 stops, 7 TFL, 1 INT) highlights the middle of the field. The secondary suffered widespread losses due to graduation, meaning all four starters will be brand new. McCarney did a solid job of convincing some talented defensive backs to come to Denton, and look for a guy like Oklahoma transfer Marcus Trice to make an immediate impact. LSU put up more than 35 points per game in 2011, using a solid ground attack (202.6 ypg, 35 TDs) to do the bulk of the damage. Junior RB Michael Ford is back after rushing for 756 yards and 7 TDs last year, averaging 6.0 ypc in the process, and Spencer Ware (177 carries, 707 yards, 8 TDs), Alfred Blue (78 carries, 539 yards, 7 TDs) and Kenny Hilliard (62 carries, 336 yards, 8 TDs) can also expect to get plenty of work this season as well. 12. I was on TJ Taylor's twitter feed and ran across this... Play Maker ‏@BeGreat_8 My bro @JordonFinch coming to UNT too. That's also another person to add to the UNT-OU connection. Jordon Finch ‏@JordonFinch @BeGreat_8 yessir I dont know much about him and couldn't find his rivals page. According to OU's roster he was a RS Junior so im not sure how much playing time he would have left. Wondered if anyone else knew about this?
  13. I usually don’t mention every time a break does not go UNT’s way in football recruiting, but it does seem worth posting that Red Oak tight end Jeremiah Gaines committed to another school today. Gaines is headed to SMU, a school for which most UNT fans have a deep hatred. I thought UNT might have a chance when Gaines cut his list of schools he was still considering to six and UNT made it. He spent a lot of time talking with Dan McCarney after UNT’s Friday Night Lights camp. Gaines also came by practice this spring with his family. 14. Hey everybody, let me introduce myself as I am new to gomeangreen.com. My name is Chris, I'm going to be starting my sophomore year at UNT this fall. I am originally from Rhode Island, and a relocated family member allowed me the opportunity to open a new chapter in my life in our fine state of Texas. I am a Geography major, and, as you can guess from my presence on this site, an avid UNT sports fan. I may be new to Mean Green Nation, but that doesn't mean I'm not every bit as passionate a fan as the rest of you, young and old a like. I was there for the opening of Apogee, I was there in Hot Springs this year, and I'll make damn sure I am front row at the 50 in the student section for all the football games for the rest of my time as a student here, and I'll attending every home basketball game and traveling with my fellow students up to Hot Springs this year and El Paso (providing there is a student bus, which is iffy given the distance) the following year for our conference tournaments. I'm currently parading myself around Rhode Island this summer sporting my Mean Green gear proudly, as I see others wearing bandwagon clothing (UCONN, Boston College, even occasionally Texas...). Anyways, enough mindless ego stroking, I have a point to make. While I am very new to gomeangreen.com, I have spent the last couple weeks reading through this site's forums as a guest, and I've noticed an interesting trend. No matter what the original topic, a large amount of the threads result in stupid bickering; people here seem to hold grudges against each other and it results in unnecessary arguments. I may be new to being a part of this wonderful school and fan base, and may not know the history of our sports teams like a lot of you do, but there is one thing I absolutely know. This is a special, special time to be a part of this university, both athletically and academically. I want everyone I know to be a part of this great time. I am incredibly excited for the upcoming football and basketball seasons, I truly feel that both are going to be incredible this year. But, as a fan base, instead of bickering over pointless things, why can't we join together, and be one? Of course, people have differing opinions over things, and this is the internet, so having arguments or disputes over things are inevitable, but there is a difference between having a constructive disagreement with a fellow fan and having a stupid, petty argument that gets nobody anywhere. Just to clarify, it isn't just this website that I see this trend on. On facebook, there is a page called "Fill Apogee"; the point of the group is to try to get the word out to as many people as humanly possible to try to sell out the home opener. The link of the group will be listed below, for those who are interested in joining. But, even on that group, which is filled with mostly students, petty arguments broke out over whether Texas Southern was a weak team to have for our home opener (not necessarily referring to the team's talent level, but more of weak on our end that that is the best we can schedule), and whether or not FCS is considered D1 or not. This is not only stupid, and irrelevant, but it's also counterproductive. Even if that logic applied (which obviously it doesn't, as anyone who follows college football will understand), the point isn't who we are playing, it is that we are playing. We should go out and support our team 100%, no matter the opponent, and pointless bickering over stupid stuff isn't going to accomplish that goal. Anyways, what ended up happening was a couple players stepped in and commented, Mason Y'Barbo, and none other than Derek Thompson. And I will post what they said. Y'Barbo: All I ask is yalls support. This is going to be a monumental season for us and i want you all to experience it with us. No need for the back and forth name calling and arguing ( though it is amusing). Just please be behind us 100% as one. Thompson: Yall dont really understand how much we feed off of our fans when we step on the field at Apogee. We need this place rockin every time we hit the field! I promise we will put a team out there that will do special things this year. All we ask is that when a home game comes around, that teams never forget the atmosphere at Apogee. Its such a psychological advantage! Hope to see everyone out there this year. Go Mean Green! After these guys commented, the bickering stopped, which is not surprising. And they're right. This is a special team, and it's going to be a special year. If we all put ourselves 100% behind these guys, and believe in them even when times are tough, I really think we can make a bowl game this year. We're going to shock some people in conference play, much like WKU did last year. Same thing with the basketball team, it's really going to be a special year. Especially now with TJ Taylor apparently added, this is really a team that can be top 25, or higher. Who knows, maybe this can be our Butler year? Anything is possible. We have a star. We have a returning supporting cast. We have a new very talented addition. And most of all, they believe they can do it. Just look at the twitter feed from these guys, they believe that they can be the best. Chris Jones seems to think he'll be in the NBA Draft next year. While that is probably silly and not going to happen, these guys have confidence coming into this year. And they have us to back them. So, this is my plea. My plea to North Texas fans everywhere, but starting with you guys. We are one, we stand for the same thing, root for the same team. We are on the same team. Let's fill Apogee. Let's get to a bowl game. Hell, let's win the damn conference, in both sports. Let's make a run in the NCAA Tournament. Let's help Tony win National Player of the Year, and be drafted Top 5. Let's do this, together. We are North Texas, Go Mean Green.

  16. Theres a young qb up in that small town of valley view bout 10 miles from gainesville. graduates in 2014 but looks like he could be pretty good. found him when i was searchin for qb recruits on hudl.com. heres his sophomore highlight clip. y'all think he could be a prospect for us? word is that he's been invited to camps. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/521518/#highlights/2115409

  19. Direct Link: http://inhouse.unt.edu/new-conference-usa-membership-begin-2013 May 4, 2012 Dear UNT community, UNT’s been making headlines lately with good news from our athletics program. The latest is an announcement I’m proud to make - we are becoming members of Conference USA in the 2013 season. Moving our competitions to C-USA will be great for our fans because of the many natural, regional rivalries it will create. Having conference members in Texas and in nearby states makes this a logical move so that Mean Green fans can more readily attend games. We’ve been part of the Sun Belt Conference since 2000 and have experienced great success there, including 20 conference championships and four bowl games. We have enjoyed our time in the Sun Belt and look forward to our final season with the conference teams we’ve played for so long. We're also excited about this great opportunity, which will mean a higher level of competition for our teams, more national media exposure and better name-recognition for our university. Raising the level of competition will make our athletics program stronger. We will compete against many successful teams, which will help us raise our level of play. And competing with the other C-USA institutions better reflects the true academic quality of our university. This conference change comes at a time when UNT’s athletics program is on the rise. Since 2003, we have developed more than 12 new athletics facilities. After opening our world-class, first-of-its kind green Apogee Stadium last fall with a $20 million sponsorship, we hosted record crowds - breaking an all-time single-season attendance record with more than 113,000 fans - and had our best football season since 2004. I know it’s only going to get better. We’ve got an even stronger team going into this fall, and Coach Dan McCarney is fired up to make this another winning season. We’ll continue to have great matchups as a member of C-USA. This is a great time to buy season tickets because football at UNT will be more exciting than ever. The Mean Green is your home team! There are great things happening in basketball, too. Tony Benford, the former men’s basketball associate head coach at Marquette University, joined us as the new head coach of men's basketball. We were sorry to lose Johnny Jones to his alma mater, Louisiana State University, but we wish him great success as its new head coach. We’ve also welcomed Mike Petersen, the former head coach of women’s basketball at Wake Forest University, as the new head coach of women's basketball. He replaces Karen Aston, who joined the University of Texas at Austin as head coach. We also wish her continued success. Both Tony and Mike bring plenty of experience and great track records to UNT, and they are taking over winning teams with a lot of talent. We expect a great basketball season this year. There are plenty of other Mean Green milestones to celebrate. The Mean Green tennis team and the men’s golf team won 2011-12 Sun Belt Conference tournament championships, while our Mean Green soccer team won the regular season championship. Our student-athletes continue to excel academically, thanks to the dedication of our athletics staff members and others at the university in ensuring they get the benefits of a first-rate education. These advances are part of UNT’s overall momentum and reflect our ongoing commitment to uphold the three A’s: academics, the arts and athletics. We’re intent on being great across the board because providing a top-quality experience enriched by knowledge, culture, competition and community is what makes great universities stand out. Sincerely, V. Lane Rawlins President

  23. North Texas will make a jump when it comes to the level of competition it faces in several sports when it joins Conference USA in 2013. The challenge is one the school’s coaches and players said they are prepared for — not to mention looking forward to — following the school’s official announcement Friday that it is leaving the Sun Belt Conference. C-USA added four other teams in addition to UNT in its latest round of realignment — Texas-San Antonio, Charlotte, Louisiana Tech and Florida International. “We are definitely excited,” said Kelsey Hodges, a member of UNT’s soccer team. “This will give us more rivalries with more teams that are closer to us. The higher level that Conference USA is at is exciting. We will have the chance at higher rankings and will have better competition. The expectations will go up.” UNT has faced members of C-USA on a regular basis over the last several years due to the proximity of some of those schools. The UNT football team fell last season at Tulsa and lost to Rice two years ago. Both teams will be among UNT’s new rivals in C-USA. UNT knocked off Rice in men’s basketball two years ago.
