  1. Conference realignment is getting to be old hat for UTSA. The Roadrunners' first Football Bowl Subdivision invitation, from the Western Athletic Conference in November 2010, featured all the pomp and circumstance of an election party: A band, beaming dignitaries, adoring fans, even cheerleaders. Today's affair, during which the Roadrunners will announce their entry to Conference USA in 2013, is expected to be far more subdued — just a basic news conference, followed by a celebratory function later in the day. Not only has UTSA been here before, this move doesn't need any embellishment. Compared to the WAC, which was on the verge of collapse even before the Roadrunners joined, C-USA is exactly what they need: a geographically sound and stable home in which to flesh out their potential. 7. You have to give Dr. Rawlins credit - this move is driven by the conference presidents and he came through for us in a big way. Is he - in his short tenure here - already making himself known to be the greatest UNT president in our history? Time will tell but is this alum's mind he is already there. Big thanks to RV and the AD staff as well. They did so much work behind the scenes, the red carpet treatment that they provided CUSA school officials, the documentation that they compiled...relationship building with the CUSA AD's and staff, the professional way they presented Apogee in person and in the media...it takes a lot of blocking and tackling behind the scenes to get a move like this off of the ground. I feel like the Board of Regents deserves a big pat on the back too, in particular C.Dan Smith whose support of athletics has NEVER wavered and yes even Bobby Ray who did a lot to help us get there. Thanks the former players, guys like Brad Kassell, Scott Hall, Patrick Cobbs and many of their teammates -- these are the guys that helped us lift ourselves off the ground. These are guys that gave us everything they had before we had state of the art facilities and big budgets... I feel like we owe all of them a debt of gratitude for this special day. And last but certainly not least the students who helped get the athletic fee in place which helped make Apogee a reality! Without it we probably wouldn't be in the great spot we are in today! Go Mean Green!
  8. Austin Schubert / Staff Writer - UNT took the next step in enhancing its athletics program when it received and accepted an invitation to join Conference USA this morning. The Mean Green will remain in the Sun Belt Conference until July 1, 2013, when the move to Conference USA will take effect. "This is validation that the progress we have made in our athletic programs in conjunction with our university’s academic reputation has made us a suitable fit for the high standards of Conference USA,” UNT Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said in a press release. “Conference USA provides a great [...] View the full article
  9. May 4, 2012 IRVING, Texas - University of North Carolina at Charlotte (Charlotte), Florida International University (FIU), Louisiana Tech University, University of North Texas and University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) have finalized comprehensive membership agreements with Conference USA, Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced today. "We are excited about adding these new members as part of our bold strategy that focuses on growing institutions in large media markets," Banowsky said. "There is a tremendous upside here. This is an opportunity for us to add a mixture of established and emerging programs. We also remain committed to divisional scheduling models that are student-athlete and fan-friendly. The more we analyzed it, the more it made sense." The metro area population of these schools is nearly 18 million. Existing members include East Carolina University, Marshall University, Rice University, University of Southern Mississippi, Tulane University, The University of Tulsa, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). Divisions will be set in the near future and the Conference intends to continue hosting its Football Championship game. Conference USA and the Mountain West will continue to discuss a future affiliation that could begin as early as 2013. Both Conferences agreed that adding membership at this time was important and have carefully coordinated new membership plans. Additional expansion remains a possibility. "The discussions with the Mountain West are ongoing," Banowsky added. "What form the relationship will take is still to be determined, but both remain committed to working together." "The Presidents and Chancellors of Conference USA universities are pleased to welcome these five distinguished institutions to C-USA," said Dr. Scott Cowen, Tulane University president and Chair of Conference USA's Board of Directors. "Conference USA has always operated in a way that reflects the values of higher education and works very hard to balance the athletics and academic interests of its student-athletes at the highest level. These institutions clearly share those values." Read more: http://www.conferenc.../050412aab.html
  10. DALLAS — Conference USA is restocking its league and is about to add more schools than it is losing to the Big East. UT-San Antonio's move to Conference USA was approved Thursday by University of Texas System regents, the same day that people familiar with the league's plans said North Texas, Charlotte, Louisiana Tech and Florida International would also be joining C-USA. Announcements are expected at each of the schools Friday. Those five additions in July 2013 will come at the same time Big East-bound Houston, SMU, Memphis and Central Florida are scheduled to leave Conference USA. That will give C-USA 13 schools, one above its current membership. Multiple people with knowledge of the planned additions spoke Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because, aside from the action by regents overseeing UTSA, no official announcements had been made by the league or the individual schools. There could be even more additions in the future to the incoming five and the eight remaining Conference USA schools: Southern Miss , Marshall, East Carolina, Tulane, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP and UAB. C-USA and the Mountain West Conference announced plans earlier this year to form a partnership in football, with as many as 24 teams located in five time zones. The two leagues are still working through details of such a move that had been planned to begin in 2013. North Texas, which is leaving the Sun Belt Conference, scheduled a news conference Friday about the “future of Mean Green athletics.” The news conference with school President V. Lane Rawlins and athletic director Rick Villarreal will be held at the school's $78 million, 30,850-seat campus football stadium that opened last season.
