  1. I shot a little video this week with UNT quarterback Derek Thompson. We cover the UTSA game this weekend and some of his thoughts as we head toward the end of the regular season. Thompson and a whole lot of other seniors will play their final home game on Saturday. Brelan Chancellor and Zach Orr will also look to go out on a positive note. UNT is on a heck of a roll late in the season with five straight wins. UNT will have its annual Senior Bowl this week. The Mean Green has responded really well to the concept over the years. Win and the team photo is displayed in the office all year. Lose and the team shot ends up in the trash. 2. Brandin Byrd ran for a career-high 202 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns as North Texas defeated UTEP 41-7. DENTON, Texas - Brandin Byrd ran for a career-high 202 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns as North Texas defeated UTEP 41-7 on a breezy and chilly afternoon at Apogee Stadium. The Mean Green (7-3, 5-1 Conference USA) handed the Miners (1-8, 0-5) their seventh straight loss. With the score 21-0 in favor of North Texas in the third quarter, Byrd put a dagger into the UTEP defense when he found an open field and sprinted 82 yards for his second touchdown of the day. The Miners finally got on the board in the same quarter when freshman Mack Leftwich found junior Jordan Leslie in the back of the end zone for a 22-yard score off a tipped pass that Leslie was able to haul in. Leftwich, son of current UTEP assistant coach and former North Texas offensive line coach Spencer Leftwich, was pulled from redshirt status mid-week and made his first-career start under center for the Orange and Blue. He completed his first three passes and ended the day 14-of-20 for 128 yards, an interception and a score. The native of Wexford, Pa. was poised in his first start, but was sacked eight times by the no. 1 ranked scoring defense in the conference. Leslie led the Miners with five receptions for 41 yards, including his sixth score of the season (ties his career high for a season). North Texas racked up 471 yards of offense, including 317 yards on the ground. The Miners were held to 184 yards of total offense. The Miners will attempt to get off the snide when they host FIU on Saturday, Nov. 16 in the Sun Bowl on Senior Night. It will mark the fifth and final home game of the 2013 season. GAME STATS LINK
  3. DENTON, TX - A dominant Mean Green defense registered a pair of blocked kicks, tied the school-record for quarterback sacks and allowed a season-low 184 yards total offense as North Texas extended its winning streak to five with a 41-7 homecoming victory over Texas-El Paso Saturday night. "We wanted to collapse the pocket," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. "They had a new quarterback and he has talent. We wanted to keep him pinned in and keep him contained, try to heat him up. But it started with controlling the running game. They've been going for 200 yards. They didn't get near that today." The North Texas offense, meanwhile, continued to pick up the slack left by the loss of running back Reggie Pegram to season-ending injury two weeks ago. Against Rice, it was Antoinne Jimmerson going to 62 yards and two touchdowns. Saturday, it was senior Brandin Byrd turning in a career-best 202 yards and two touchdowns, including an 82-yard scoring run in the second half, as North Texas piled up 317 yards on the ground and 471 total yards for the game. "You love to see the consistency from Brandin Byrd," McCarney said. "He's one of the most unselfish guys we got. He's one of the toughest players, one of the most respected players we have in this program." The win keeps North Texas (7-3, 5-1) atop the Conference USA West-Division standings, half a game up on Rice. The Mean Green, by virtue of last week's 28-16 victory over Rice, holds the tie-breaker advantage over the Owls. The North Texas defense battered UTEP and its freshman quarterback, Mack Leftwich, who was sacked eight times, the most by the Mean Greensince North Texas sacked Texas' Chris Simms eight times in 2002. Marcus Trice, Aaron Bellazin, Brandon McCoy, Richard Abbe and Zach Orr had sacks, and Orr had a game-high 12 tackles, moving him into sixth place on the North Texas all-time career tackles list. North Texas was up 7-0 when the Mean Green got its third punt block of the season. Redshirt freshman Rex Rollins blocked a UTEP kick and freshman Darvin Kidsy recovered for touchdown and a 14-0 lead. UTEP never threatened the rest of the way, held to 56 yards rushing (1.3 yards per rush) and 184 yards of total offense. What They Said "There's a chance we're going to be invited somewhere in the country. I didn't want that bus ride from Tulsa to be our last time together, and it won't be. We hit seven today. Now let's go hit eight." --North Texas coach Dan McCarney on his team's probable bowl future "It was just a big hole. Drew Miller came off and cut his guy. He did it in the first half and I didn't hit it where I was supposed to. In the second half, it was there and I just attacked the grass and made sure I didn't get caught." -- Running back Brandin Byrd on his 82-yard touchdown run "We made sure we did our job." -- Defensive lineman Aaron Bellazin on the team's eight sacks, which tied a team record "You can't do it without the o-line. They just opened it up for me and the other backs." -- Byrd on his 202-yard game and the team's 317-yard rushing performance Quick Hits • The Mean Green's path to the C-USA West Division title is now open. Saturday afternoon, Tulane suffered its second league loss in as many weeks, falling 10-7 to UTSA and falling out of first place in the West for the first time. North Texas is now half a game ahead of Rice, over which the Mean Green own a tie-breaker edge courtesy of last week's 28-16 decision. If North Texas wins its final two regular-season games, it will win the West Division and advance to the C-USA championship game on Dec. 7. • Saturday's homecoming crowd of 26,119 is the second largest at Apogee Stadium and the fifth largest home crowd in North Texas history. • The Mean Green recorded two block kicks in the first quarter, running their total for the season to five. Austin Orr blocked a 46-yard field goal (the second field goal block of the year) and Rex Rollins blocked a punt, which was recovered by Darvin Kidsy for a touchdown. • North Texas has been running reverses to Brelan Chancellor this year, and did so again Saturday. But the Mean Green also ran a double-reverse from Chancellor to Carlos Harris for 26 yards, abetted by a block by quarterback Derek Thompson on UTEP's 6-2, 325-pound team captain Marcus Bagley. The run set up Antoinne Jimmerson's second-quarter TD run. • Senior defensive lineman Richard Abbe had his first multi-sack game with two sacks of UTEP quarterback Mack Leftwich. • Brandin Byrd had a career day, rushing for 185 yards and two touchdowns, the biggest performance by a Mean Green running back since Lance Dunbar's 313-yard effort against Middle Tennessee in 2011. • Byrd's day was the first 100-yard game by a North Texas running back since Byrd's 139 against Middle Tennessee earlier this year. • Sophomore wide receiver Carlos Harris celebrated his birthday Saturday with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Thompson in the fourth quarter. It was the longest pass reception of Harris's career. • Junior defensive end Quinton Brown saw his first action of the season since suffering a knee injury in spring practice. • With Saturday's win over UTEP, Dan McCarney has reached 16 victories fewer games than any North Texas coach since Rod Rust. McCarney's 16 wins in 34 games is the fifth fastest to that mark in school history, behind Rust (16 in 20), Odus Mitchell (16 in 21), J.W. St. Clair (16 in 25), and Jack Sisco (16 in 29). • The Mean Green's five-game win streak is the longest since 2004, when North Texas won seven straight. • North Texas extended its streak of scoring 21 points or more to 10 games, the longest such streak in program history. • Senior linebacker Zach Orr now has 96 tackles for the season, just 18 away from entering the top 10 for a single season in school history. Lester Harper's 114 tackles in 1982 is currently 10th. • Orr's career-tackle total of 329 is now No. 6 all-time at North Texas, surpassing Lance White (325) and closing on Burks Washington (351) at No. 5. • North Texas has 32 touchdowns this year, and with two games left in the regular season, the Mean Green already has more touchdowns than it scored a year ago, when it had 31 TDs. • After winning four games a year ago and now at 7-3 this year, North Texas has its biggest single-season turnaround since 2001-2002. Up Next After a week off, North Texas wraps up its three-game homestand on Saturday, Nov. 23, against another in-state rival, UT-San Antonio. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Read more: http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/110913aab.html
  4. This season UNT has not only won six of their nine games, but have won in commanding fashion. They even gave Georgia a little scare. Derek Thompson the quarterback is 177:264 with 2080 yards, 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Brandin Byrd the running back, has a 4.1 YPC over 500 yards and 6 touchdowns. They are ranked 77th in the NCAA and 5th in CUSA on offense. But it is the defense that is the stars. They are ranked 39th in the NCAA and 4th in CUSA in total defense, and 19th in the NCAA and 1st in CUSA in points allowed. Imagine if this team can hold Notre Dame or Northwestern on national television on New Year’s Day. It would be a huge boost for the Texas school many have forgotten about in football. This team has the chance to do special things, and not just this year. Coach Dan McCarney has put UNT back into the conversation of Texas football, somewhere “Mean “Joe Greene is smiling. Now UNT must finish the season. First up is UTEP for the Homecoming game this weekend. Come New Year’s Day I know I will be sitting on my couch cheering for UNT to beat whoever they face. Those of us who are attending, have attended, or will attend UNT are excited and we can thank Dan McCarney and the guys on the field. 5. DENTON, Texas -- Brandin Byrd rushed for 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns as North Texas walloped UTEP 41-7 on Saturday. The win keeps North Texas (7-3, 5-1 Conference USA) atop the C-USA West Division standings, a half-game ahead of Rice. The Mean Green defeated Rice a week ago. Mean Green defense smothered UTEP (1-9, 0-5), blocking a punt and a field goal, tying the school record of eight sacks and allowing a season-low 184 yards of total offense. 6. North Texas boasts the most talented group of linebackers and defensive backs in the C-USA and maybe the whole State of Texas. That group has been the responsible for giving the Mean Green a plus-9 turnover margin. Middle Linebacker Zachary Orr leads the team in tackles and has recorded twelve tackles in a game twice this season. Marcus Trice is the best safety in the C-USA, he is third on the team in tackles, leads the team with four interceptions and has also blocked two kicks. The Mean Green defense is on a streak of four straight games of holding opponents to under 20 points, and with Miners only scoring 14 points the past two weeks, that could very well be the story of the game with a true freshman starting in his first game at quarterback against a top defense. Wade and Orr are not the only productive players on the Green Curtain. Lairamie Lee is a hard hitting safety that plays both the strong and free giving North Texas one the best safety combos in the conference with him and Trice. Will Wright plays outside linebacker on the left side and has two picks, and has good size at 6'2 230. Derek Akunne plays the opposite side at linebacker and is second on the team in tackles can really bang heads in there, like Orr he has two games of twelve tackles as well. You can't forget about that quick and active defensive line for North Texas. While the Miners offensive line has faced bigger lineups, they will not face a more deep, experienced, and talent group. Aaron Bellazin leads the group in sacks at the defensive end spot, and could get an NFL look after the draft. Richard Abbe is a monster at D-tackle, he goes 6'4 320. While his stats will not jump out at you, the injury problems for the Miners offensive front at guard will be exposed. 7. So, how good is the Mean Green when measured against other FBS programs? UNT landed at No. 76 in this week’s Sagarin college football rankings, which are used as part of the BCS formula. Among other teams, the Mean Green finished ahead of Syracuse (77), Wake Forest (78), Kentucky (86), Colorado (88), SMU (89), North Carolina State (90), Colorado State (91), Virginia (94), San Diego State (95) and Kansas (101). In relation to fellow C-USA contenders, UNT is ranked behind Rice (74), a team it defeated on Halloween night, but ahead of Tulane (98), which beat UNT on Oct. 5. 8. UTEP (+24) at North Texas 2:30 p.m., CSS: The Mean Green has won four straight after losses to Georgia and Tulane. UNT is tied for first with Tulane and Rice in Conference USA’s west division. The Mean Green has allowed no more than 16 points in their last four. The Miners lost to Rice and Texas A&M by a combined score of 102-14. North Texas 40, UTEP 13. 9. At season's start, a new coaching staff, highly touted transfer quarterback, and plenty of other talented pieces seemed to be the answer for an offense, and a team that struggled mightily in 2012. Returning on offense was Nathan Jeffery, a stud running back who rushed for nearly 900 yards in just about 8 full games in 2012, as well a Biletnikoff Award Watch List receiver in Jordan Leslie, and a "pro style" quarterback in Jameill Showers ready to lead the way. Add to the mix a trio of capable tight ends, a number of talented running backs in the stable, and a 6'5 receiver with great hands and good speed and the Miners seemed poised for a solid a season on offense. Right? Well, not exactly. At 1-7 overall, and 0-4 in conference play, this season for UTEP football has quickly turned into a disappointment, and one with far more questions than answers. Early on, the Miner offense was hitting on all cylinders. Despite its struggles at times, through the first five games they averaged nearly 34 points a game, and boasted a balanced 218.6 passing yards and 201.4 rushing yards per contest. Since then though, the points per game and passing yards per game have dipped to just 11.3 and 117.6, while the rushing yards have remained about the same at 199 yards to per game. So what happened? Well, most noticeably, and for whatever reason, the Miners have almost completely abandoned the pass. Through those first five games, they averaged roughly 31 pass attempts per contest. In the last three, just 19. Read more http://www.minerrush.com/2013/11/6/5069590/abandonment-of-pass-has-done-more-harm-than-good-for-utep-football
  10. From the day he was hired to take over the UTEP football program, Sean Kugler promised an ocean of change. For 11 months he has delivered. Wednesday morning Kugler made official the biggest, most surprising change yet: True freshman Mack Leftwich is the Miners' new quarterback. A year removed from leading North Allegheny High to the Pennsylvania state championship and earning that state's player of the year honor, the 5-foot-10 Leftwich will lead 24-point underdog UTEP to Conference USA-leading North Texas Saturday. "It's a pretty big surprise," said Leftwich, who did approach Kugler on Sunday about pulling his redshirt. "Obviously we needed to make a change, it was the kind of situation that came up and I said I'd be willing to do it. "In the pre-game I'll be pumped up, but after I get hit a few times I'll settle into the game, it will be fun. ... This will be awesome, hopefully it can really kick start us. If you had asked me two or three weeks ago, I wouldn't have seen this coming." Kugler indicated at Monday's press conference that UTEP's quarterback situation was up for examination following back-to-back seven-point games in the wake of the injury to Jameill Showers, hardly surprising considering Blaire Sullivan had thrown four interceptions in 26 passing attempts. The assumption at that point was that second-year freshman Garrett Simpson would get his shot, but Kugler turned to the scout team and opted to burn Leftwich's redshirt. Leftwich is the son of first-year offensive line coach Spencer Leftwich. Read more http://www.elpasotimes.com/latestnews/ci_24465381/utep-freshman-mack-leftwich-start-quarterback-against-north
  11. 2. North Texas Mean Green (6-3, 4-1) Last: (W) 28-16 Vs. Rice, Up Next: Vs. UTEP, Last Week Rank: #4 North Texas jumps two spots up after their upset of Rice last Thursday. The Mean Green had the better play makers and made more big plays as they have done all year. Brelan Chancellor is the best skill player in the conference and showcased that last week. If Tulane loses, which will happen, North Texas will be in control of the west after they beat UTEP. Those goal line stands defined the culture of football we can expect to see from them ongoing. Looking ahead, that home game against UTSA is going to be very pivotal in the west race, if UTSA comes into that game at 4-2 what an important game it will be. 12. FACTS & STATS: Site: Apogee Stadium (30,850) -- Denton, Texas. Television: CSS. Home Record: UTEP 0-4, UNT 4-0. Away Record: UTEP 1-3, UNT 2-3. Neutral Record: UTEP 0-0, UNT 0-0. Conference Record: UTEP 0-4, UNT 4-1. Series Record: North Texas leads, 13-5-3. GAME NOTES: Lone Star State foes get together in Denton this weekend, as the North Texas Mean Green entertain the Miners of Texas-El Paso in a Conference- USA showdown. North Texas, which enters the week tied with Tulane for second place in the West Division of C-USA, last played on Halloween night and used the meeting against Rice to post not just a 28-16 victory, but also to become bowl eligible for the first time in nearly a decade. Now 4-1 in conference play, UNT is riding a four-game win streak. The Miners haven't been nearly as lucky or good in 2013, dealing with a record of just 1-7 and a spot in last place in the division standings at 0-4. The lone victory for UTEP was a 42-21 rout of New Mexico State in the second game of the season, but even that has to be questioned given that NMSU has just two wins the last two seasons and hasn't beaten another FBS program since 2011. 13. If one has been around the UNT football program for the last several years, Spencer Leftwich is a familiar name. UNT’s former offensive line coach played a big role in UNT’s four-year run as Sun Belt Conference champions back in the early 2000s and then came back for a brief stint before quickly getting out of dodge the first chance he got, taking a job at Tulsa. Lefty, who is a great guy and just as good a coach, is now the offensive line coach at UTEP. What makes the connection all the more interesting is that UTEP coach Sean Kugler today named Lefty’s son Mack Leftwich the Miners starting quarterback for Saturday’s game between UNT and UTEP. Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times has the news. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/11/leftys-son-to-start-against-unt-soccer-team-to-play-today-in-c-usa-tourney.html/
  14. In the immediate aftermath of the 57-7, three-interception loss to Texas A&M, Sean Kugler defended Blaire Sullivan as his starting quarterback. By Monday's press conference, after two days of evaluating film, Kugler admitted he's reconsidering matters for Saturday's game at North Texas. He all but declared an open competition over the next two days between Sullivan and the only other quarterback on the roster he's willing to play, Garrett Simpson. "We're going to look at that avenue this week," Kugler said of a quarterback change in the wake of the loss of Jameill Showers to a separated shoulder. He won't burn the redshirt of the other quarterback, true freshman Mack Leftwich "We'll exhaust all avenues that will give us the best chance to win. Obviously it's an issue. "We'll approach it as two options, we'll do it throughout practice, by midweek we'll have an answer. We're not just going to sit status quo." When asked who will take the first snap at Tuesday's practice, Kugler said, "That remains to be seen." Read more: http://www.elpasotimes.com/sports/ci_24454804/el-paso-times
  15. The first season in the CUSA has been a good one for North Texas...so far. The Mean Green improved to 4-1 in the conference and 6-3 overall following a 28-16 victory over visiting Rice. Surging UNT has now won four in a row with three games to be played and a spot in the postseason within their grasp. The Offense was plain vanilla versus the Owls but took complete advantage of a recovered fumble and a pair of interceptions to score when the opportunity arose. UNT managed just 253 yards with a Antoinne Jimmerson and his eight carry, 62 yard rushing yards leading the fround game while Derek Thompson completed 7-13 for 104 yards and a touchdown and pick. The defense forced Taylor McHarque to the air more then he wanted where he tossed a pair of critical interceptions. I think North Texas is a nice looking squad and is even better at home which has me looking at them in a must win versus UTEP if they want to stay in the CUSA race. This line is a little late coming out so look for injuries before betting... 16. There were a few interesting tidbits as usual from the Dan McCarney press conference. McCarney was particularly animated today and reiterated his frustration that UNT can’t seem to sell out Apogee Stadium. UNT is getting better, there is no doubt about it, and McCarney called on fans to show up. I will have quotes for the paper tomorrow. And in other news: – Quenton Brown and Daniel Prior will likely practice this week and could play against UTEP. 17. Our former OL coach is now doing the same for UTEP. Just joined as part of Kugler's staff. His son is a redshirt freshman QB for UTEP. It seems like Spencer bailed on us during the Dodge era for greener pastures. Looks like the tables may have turned a bit. Always liked the guy and wish him well - other than this week of course.
  18. COLLEGE STATION — For first-year UTEP head coach Sean Kugler, there were plenty of things that went wrong for the Miners in their 57-7 blowout loss to No. 12 Texas A&M on Saturday at Kyle Field. But the most disappointment came earlier this week when it became official that UTEP quarterback and former Shoemaker standout Jameill Showers would not lead the Miners (1-7) against the Aggies (7-2). “I’m pretty sure he was disappointed deep down, but he never showed it,” Kugler said. “I’m sure it was pretty emotional for him not to go out there and compete tonight, and to be honest with you, it hurts me knowing that kid didn’t get the opportunity because I felt bad for him.” The loss was UTEP’s third all-time to Texas A&M. The game was an anticipated one for Showers, who played in 11 games for Texas A&M before transferring to UTEP after Johnny Manziel solidified himself as the Aggie starter and became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012. Showers missed his return to College Station due to an injured right shoulder he sustained in a loss to Rice on Sept. 26. 19. * I watched some of the North Texas-Rice game Thursday night, and I can't say enough about the work of Mean Green coach Dan McCarney. The former Iowa State coach has North Texas bowl eligible for the first time in nearly 10 years. Early in the fourth quarter of the Mean Green's 28-16 win over Rice, UNT withstood eight straight goal-to-goal plays by the Rice offense -- seven of which came inside the Mean Green 4. Amazing. Good work by a coach who was run off perhaps prematurely by the Cyclones. 20. There was no mistaking the look on Sean Kuglers face. In his shortest interview to date 8-and-a-half-minutes of mostly awkward silence between brief, staccato answers the UTEP head coachs mug spoke volumes: cold, steely and pained. Kugler saw what happened last Saturday and he knows what his Miners will face on national television (ESPN2) this Saturday. UTEP will head to College Station, TX, to take on one of the most prolific offenses in the country this weekend in No. 12 Texas A&M. The Miners will play without starting QB Jameill Showers, who graduated from A&M last spring. Showers dislocated his shoulder in a close game against the Rice Owls that was later blown wide open. UTEP trailed, 17-7, when true freshman RB Aaron Jones followed an 81-yard run to the 3-yard line with a fumble on second-and-goal, giving the ball to Rice at the Owls 1. Rice promptly marched 99 yards and scored; the Miners, says Kugler, failed to respond, and the 45-7 rout was on. Read more: http://krod.com/utep-faces-manziel-aggies-without-am-transfer-showers/
  21. Dan McCarney, the head coach at UNT and former head man at Iowa St, is in his 3rd year for the Mean Green. They just became bowl eligible last night for the first time in quite a while. They are still in the running for the west division title and are a senior laden team. Dan McCarney had proved that he could produce a winner at a school that normally lost big when he was at Iowa St but ended with a losing season in 2006 and got canned. Trying to find parallels to the UTEP situation I looked at the UNT recruiting for the past few years. According to Rivals when you average the UNT rankings from 2010 thru 2013 you come up with an average of 104th out of 120 plus schools. UTEP's average over the same period, oddly enough, is also 104. That is obviously not a detailed recruiting report but it does indicate that UNT is winning now with about the same grade of athlete that UTEP now has. Coaching has made a big difference for UNT but they do have a coach that has done it before and has taken his 3rd year to produce a winner. Our coach is still an unknown until we see results over the next few years. Also, McCarney has developed a team that emphasizes the run and a tough defense and Kugler is trying to do that at UTEP as well. 22. Well darn I got distracted and forgot what it was. I will have to get back to you on this. As I recall it was very concerning. GMG.
  23. "Really curious about the fan breakdown vs UNT. We owned SMU in football and basketball at games here in DFW (Don Haskins and Sun Bowl - East) - hope it's the same way againts UNT. Haven't been to a UNT game, but they have the 3rd largest enrollment in the state (behind only UT and A&M), but, don't think that translates to a rabid fan base for them, at least that's what my Brother-in-Law tells me who works at the University and has gone to some games........hopefully, this works in our favor." read more: http://utep.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=509&tid=192254682&mid=192254682&sid=991&style=2
