  1. DALLAS — Defensive end Cedric Reed, one of four Texas players who reportedly had dinner with an agent last spring, said Tuesday he’s no longer being investigated and expects to play in the Longhorns’ season opener against North Texas. “I’m cleared,” Reed said at Big 12 media days at the Omni Dallas Hotel. Longhorns coach Charlie Strong said he couldn’t divulge any details about possible suspensions. “It’s a compliance issue right now,” Strong said. “It’s an ongoing investigation and they’re trying to get it all worked out.” read more: http://blog.mysanantonio.com/longhorns/2014/07/ut-football-reed-says-hes-cleared-for-opener/#25297101=0
  2. DALLAS - New Texas coach Charlie Strong's first order of business while making his formal introduction to Big 12 Conference peers on Tuesday was to slightly play down high expectations. "You expect them to have expectations at the University of Texas because you're looking at a premier program," Strong said on the second and final day of the conference's media assembly. "But it's all about our players and just making sure we go compete. We as a coaching staff need to make sure the preparation is there. "When you get caught up in the expectations, I don't ever want to put pressure on our team. I just want them to go out and just go to work each and every day." Strong will begin his first season at Texas in the Longhorns' opener at home against North Texas on Aug. 30. He replaces Mack Brown, who resigned in January after an 8-5 season -- disappointing by Texas standards -- and wilting under the expectations of a fan base that wants to be a national contender every year. 3. Senior center Dom Espinosa is the only returning starter from last year's offensive line, so Texas will truly win or lose in the trenches this year. Espinosa will have to be an anchor for the more inexperienced line mates in 2014. Cedrick Flowers will probably get the left guard position, as he is the only returning guard with any real experience. On the other side, the competition is wide open between Redshirt freshmen Rami Hammad and Darius James, who were both highly touted coming out of high school and certainly have the talent to be great for the Longhorns. On the defensive side of the ball, Stefan Scrafield of Sports Day DFW says cornerback Quandre Diggs may be new defensive coordinator Vance Bedford's overall best player. - See more at: http://www.gospelherald.com/articles/51923/20140716/ncaa-football-2014-predictions-texas-longhorns-play-strong-new-coach.htm#sthash.xaGEu17n.dpuf
  4. The Texas Longhorns offense is back at full strength for coach Charlie Strong's first season at the helm. Quarterback David Ash and running back Johnathan Gray were medically cleared to practice Monday, along with linebacker Jordan Hicks, reports Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman. 6. Texas Longhorns junior running back Johnathan Gray is expected to be fully cleared for workouts next week, reports Jeremy Fowler of CBS Sports. Gray tore his Achilles tendon last November during the Longhorn's 47-40 overtime win over the West Virginia Mountaineers. Prior to that, he had amassed 780 yards and four touchdowns on the year for Texas, who went 8-5 last season. 8. AUSTIN (KXAN) Beer and wine will not be coming to University of Texas football games this fall for the general public, according to UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa. Cigarroa told reporters Thursday after a Board of Regents meeting that he would not authorize the alcohol sales at Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, saying it needs more review. 9. 2. Texas Longhorns (3.50) Charlie Strong's debut comes against a decent Conference USA team in North Texas, which went 9-4 last season. Things get even tougher when the Horns get a visit from a BYU team that bullied UT last year, 40-21. 10. Week 1: The University of North Texas Now that we’ve gone over what Texas is going to look like next year, it’s time to start talking Longhorn opponents. This series will examine Texas’ 2014 foes from the perspective of who they are and what challenges or advantages that will present to Texas. By the end of the series you should know the whole league a lot better and understand what UT's team needs to look like in order to find success on the field. North Texas The Mean Green won nine games last year in their first season in Conference USA, so they may not be quite the punch line we’re accustomed to facing. You might recognize head coach Dan McCarney from his time running Iowa State from 1995 to 2006 before resigning and leaving the Cyclones in the incapable hands of Gene Chizik. It only took him three years to win nine games at North Texas, he’s a great coach. On the plus side, their QB is gone, their top two receivers are gone, their starting running back is gone, and their defensive line is gone. We’ll be more basic in this one, in part because we almost certainly won’t lose this game and in part because I can’t be bothered to learn too much about such a team. Mean Green offense: Matchup Challenges The North Texas offense is designed to find success without elite, hard to find talents. Their run game is all about pulling linemen, traps, and leads that get 6-foot-2, 290-pound guards who couldn’t get Big 12 offers moving to hit defenders at favorable angles. They use a lot of 2-back sets and will run power, counter, pin & pull, draw, and zone-stretch to knock you out of the way. They’re actually pretty good at it and right guard Cyril Lemon can move and maul better than many of his contemporaries in the Big 12. The Mean Green returns four out of five OL from last year’s group, including Lemon and a rather athletic and talented left tackle named Antonio Johnson. 11. I sure hope so! This will be a great audience to play in front of and impress. I think our band is one of the best in the country.
  12. When: Aug. 30, 2014 When: Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, Texas The Longhorns' first game of 2014 could very well be the easiest of the season. North Texas is coming off of a successful nine-win season but will be without 13 starters—six of offense and seven on defense—from the 2013 team. The Mean Green had a strong defensive unit last season, which ranked No. 8 in scoring defense, No. 14 in rushing defense, No. 17 in total defense and tied for No. 7 in total sacks. The team will be without its entire starting defensive line from the 2013 squad, which is not an easy position to replace. Texas should not have a problem kicking off the season with a win over North Texas. 13. Expectations. Strong sounds like he plans to compete now with no mulligans. Even with a solid senior class, Texas will be challenged early. The easiest non-conference game is against a UNT team that won nine games. BYU is still a painful memory after gashing the Longhorns for 550 yards rushing. And UCLA opens 2014 as a Top 15 team. Two of the first three Big 12 games are against defending champ Baylor and likely 2014 favorite Oklahoma. 15. Word broke from multiple outlets late Tuesday morning that Arizona State athletics director Steve Patterson has been hired to the same post at Texas. As recently as last Monday, West Virginia athletics director Oliver Luck appeared to be the heavy front-runner for the job, but that changed swiftly Tuesday morning when word leaked that Patterson had overtaken Luck as the favorite to land the job. Shortly thereafter, those same outlets reported the deal had been done and Patterson was the new athletics director at Texas. Patterson had reportedly turned down the job last week, and had those inside the Arizona State athletics department believing he would stay.
