  1. SMU vs. UNTby PonyTime » Tue Aug 04, 2015 12:50 pm For those who have a hard time predicting SMU over UNT in their season predictions, just look at the track record. Every time we lose to those guys - the next time we play them it is turned around. 1977 - Loss by 11 @SMU 1979 - win by 11 @SMU 1990 - Loss by 7 @ UNT 1992 - Win by 14 @ SMU 2006 - Loss by 18 @UNT 2007 - Win by 14 @SMU I say we win by about 35 or so and then they can fire their coach after the game... read more: http://ponyfans.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=78409&sid=3458b5c32ae516459d62f006311d3e47
  2. Two games removed from signing a contract extension, June Jones resigned as SMU’s football coach on Monday, citing personal issues. Jones, 61, resurrected football on the Hilltop, breaking a 25-year bowl drought with four straight bowl appearances. After a 1-11 first year in 2008, Jones guided the Mustangs to a 35-32 record over the last five years, including three bowl victories. Defensive coordinator Tom Mason will serve as head coach for the rest of the season. SMU officials will organize a search committee to find a successor. Blowout losses to Baylor and North Texas, on the heels of last year’s 5-7 finish, ignited a social media firestorm of criticism. Many fans, embarrassed by being outscored 88-6 in the first two games, were calling for his dismissal. 3. I don’t know if SMU would have outright fired June Jones during the season. Maybe they wouldn’t have fired him at all. But it can’t really come as a surprise that Jones is stepping down after two games, because SMU lost those two games by a cumulative score of 88-6. And one of those games was against UNT. 5. On the biggest disappointment from the loss: The biggest disappointment was turning the ball over. We have young guys on special teams that make bad decisions on kickoffs and punts, and that puts us at a tremendous disadvantage when we turn it over five times. If we dont turn it over and make bad decisions in the return game then youre probably happy with the defense. I thought we gave up one cheap one that they shouldnt have got, but that happens when youre frustrated. Like I said, were a long way from where we need to be. On the quarterback situation: Well, Neal (Burcham) hurt his elbow, so he didnt play in the second half. Kolney (Cassel) does some good things, but hes just really young. I think hes going to do some good things one day. He likes competition. He has enough arm to make all the throws. Hes just got to get through the experience part, the young part of playing the game. Most of his time was against their mop up crew, which is pretty good experience. 6. BTW, congrats to UNT by Charleston Pony » Sun Sep 07, 2014 12:31 pm they kicked our arses in every phase of the game. This game was important to them, as it should have been for us, and I give their fans credit for not coming on here and rubbing our noses in it. Things are looking up in Denton and I hope we can soon say the same for SMU football. ** side note ** I think I heard yesterday we have never beaten them in Denton. I know most SMU types look down on UNT, but I think this has the makings of another metroplex rivalry. I've always thought that with over 30k student enrollment, UNT has a tremendous upside in today's world of college athletics. That win yesterday could really jump start their program. 7. Did anyone notice that they had Michael Banogu at one of the tackle spots? I could swear I saw him at tackle and Lemon back at guard... And why did they keep pulling Y-Barbo out? Whatever adjustment they made was a damn good one for us today. There was also a heated exchange between Mac in two situations. One was with #46 AJ Smith after a silly penalty and the other one was between Mac and OL Coach Mike Simmonds.. Simmonds got a penalty for being on the field. I do not know why but he was very pissed about something that happened with one of his OL. Mac tore Simmonds a new one for getting the penalty. You know it's a bad day for penalties when Akunne gets one! Hopefully we learned from this today and thank goodness it didn't have an effect on the game...
  8. North Texas ran even more quarterbacks into its game against SMU on Saturday at Apogee Stadium than it did in its season opener against Texas last week. Those backups just didn’t get in until Josh Greer seemingly tightened his grip on the starting job in his second outing with the Mean Green. The sophomore wasn’t asked to do a whole lot in UNT’s 43-6 win over the Mustangs, but took advantage of his opportunities and looked comfortable. Greer finished 9-for-12 for 86 yards in a performance that was a dramatic turn from just a week ago. The Navarro College transfer went 2-for-11 for eight yards with two interceptions in a loss to Texas and was pulled in favor of backup Andrew McNulty. UNT coach Dan McCarney opened up the quarterback spot for competition in practice following that game, before settling on starting Greer again against SMU. 9. 4. Run over- SMU’s front seven was expected to be a strength this season with all three starters returning on the defensive line. But the group was absolutely dominated in Denton. North Texas’ offensive line overpowered the Mustangs and opened up some huge running lanes for Reggie Pegram, Jeffrey Wilson and Antoinne Jimmerson. The three backs combined for 190 yards and two touchdowns. If SMU keeps this up, opposing teams are going to gash the Ponies right up the gut. SMU was simply outmuscled, outplayed and outcoached. It looks like it’s going to be a long season for head coach June Jones and defensive line coach Bert Hill. 10. 1). Thanked the students and fans for the turnout and atmosphere on a hot day... 2). Played Mean Green Football today... +5 on the turnover margin 3). Defense was really good on 3rd down (like against UT) 4). Special teams came away with big plays, field position, kickers had a great day. 5). Penalties were ridiculous... 6). A great win for the Mean Green Family today 7). We took away their running game. It made them one dimensional 8). We forced turnovers today. 9). Freshman kicker Trevor Moore - What a great job by that young man. It was impressive to watch. 10). La. Tech is improved compared to a year ago hear more: http://www.kntu.com/2014/09/06/6496/
