  2. LAFAYETTE – Shawn Forrest, a 14-year collegiate coaching veteran who spent the last four seasons at North Texas, has been named assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Louisiana. The announcement was made by men's basketball head coach Bob Marlin, and the hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. “We are happy to welcome Shawn into the Ragin' Cajuns basketball family,” Marlin said. “As we went through the search and tried to determine which candidate fit best in our program, Shawn's name kept coming to the top. “Shawn’s experience as a coach and recruiter in the Sun Belt Conference should provide an immediate benefit to the program,” Marlin added. “The knowledge that he has gained as a coach at the Division I level over the last two decades will help us to achieve the level of success that we are working towards.” While serving as an assistant coach at North Texas (2008-09 through 2011-12), Forrest worked with teams that averaged 21.3 wins per season. In 2009-10, the Mean Green went 24-9, won the Sun Belt crown and faced Kansas State in the first round of the NCAA Championship. Forrest was instrumental in helping land the 2010-11 recruiting class of Tony Mitchell, Jordan Williams, Chris Jones, and Roger Franklin, which was ranked as high as No. 31 in the country. Prior to moving to Denton, Texas, Forrest worked as an assistant coach at Arkansas State for six seasons (2002-03 through 2007-08). He helped the Red Wolves to multiple Top 100 recruiting classes, which included a pair of two-time All-Sun Belt Conference players, a Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year, a league-leading scorer, second-leading scorer and third-leading scorer in the conference. 9. 3. Tony Mitchell - North Texas Tony Mitchell was the consensus No. 20 recruit in the nation (and No. 2 in Texas behind Perry Jones) and committed to Missouri out of high school (which, ironically, could have saved Mike Anderson's job). But that didn't work out so he tore it up with Team USA for a bit before ending up as the most highly anticipated recruit in the history of the Sun Belt Conference. He averaged a double-double (14.7 points and 10.3 boards) this season as a freshman, had the 4th best DR% in the nation, and for kicks made 44% of his 3s. read more: http://bloguin.com/runthefloor/2012-articles/may/10-mid-miajor-forwards-and-centers-to-watch-in-2012-13.html

  12. For the first time ever, all three schools hired new coaches in the same off-season. You’d have to go back to 1975 to find the last time two of the schools hired new coaches the same year, much less three. And that’s great news for high school basketball in Dallas, Fort Worth and all the suburbs that surround the two hubs of the Dallas area. The stakes have been raised. All three coaches — Larry Brown at SMU, Trent Johnson at TCU and Tony Benford at North Texas — plan to make local talent an emphasis in their recruiting. “I was shocked when I saw the talent here,” Brown said. “I’ve seen some kids who are pretty special. I don’t know that we have a chance [at them], but I don’t want to lower the bar for us.” Don’t look for any of the three new coaches to lower the bar. Brown has the cachet. He’s the only coach in history to have won an NCAA and NBA title and has already been enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. What recruit isn’t going to answer the door when Larry Brown comes a knocking? Johnson has been selected coach of the year in three different conferences — the WAC (Nevada) in 2003, Pac-10 (Stanford) in 2008 and SEC (LSU) in 2009. He’s taken teams to five NCAA Tournaments and reached a pair of Sweet 16s. What recruit isn’t going to answer the door when Johnson comes a knocking? This is the first head coaching opportunity for Benford, but he arrives in Texas with a slight edge over Brown and Johnson. His primary recruiting responsibility over the last 20 seasons as an assistant at New Mexico, Arizona State, Nebraska and Marquette has been the state of Texas. 14. I looked at some archived articles from the paper covering Marshalltown where he played junior college ball. First off, I think it's fairly clear that Coleman decided to go the prep school and juco route because of grades as teams like Nebraska, and Marquette were recruiting him heavily in high school. This would also explain his connection with Tony Benford who was the primary recruiter for Marquette around the time Coleman was in high school. So Benford knows this kid and what he is capable of. So why did he leave Nebraska? Tim Miles had taken over for the fired Doc Sadler and was going in another direction as evidenced by this quote: That being said it also appears that Miles still had interest in Coleman as stated here: There is a similarity with Coleman's situation and John Odoh as Odoh had developed a strong relationship with Johnny Jones and Shawn Forrest: Here's the entire article: http://meangreenblog...-up-push-f.html Coleman and Nebraska to go separate ways (Update)
