  1. We always seem to do well there. Now with Perry back in the fold you know he is going to do some damage. It will be interesting to see how well we do there with this new staff.

  4. Dan McCarney called me back while traveling the back roads of who knows where on a recruiting trip to talk a little about the new lineup of his coaching staff. UNT added Tommy Perry as its special teams/running backs coach, moved Mike Grant from running backs to wide receivers and Nick Quartaro from wide receivers to tight ends. McCarney was very impressed with Perry when he sat down with him at the coaches’ convention. He had terrific recommendations from former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum. UNT director of football operations Scotty Conley also recommended Perry, who was on Conley’s staff at Texas A&M-Commerce. Perry played at Tyler JC and A&M. I asked about how important Texas ties were in the interview process. McCarney said that he was going to hire the best coach he could find and felt he found the right guy in Perry. 5. DENTON, Texas - North Texas head coach Dan McCarney has announced the hiring of Tommy Perry as the new running backs coach and special teams coordinator. Perry, a Texas native, comes to North Texas after spending the last four seasons as an assistant at South Alabama. "Out of the hundreds of applicants that we had for this position, Tommy clearly rose to the top as I went through this process," said McCarney. "He brings in a wealth of experience and success and has a great passion for the running back position." In addition to the hiring of Perry, Coach McCarney has made two staff changes. Mike Grant will now coach the wide receivers and Nick Quartaro takes over as the tight ends coach. While at South Alabama, Perry coached the running backs and was the special teams coordinator. In 2012, the first season at the FBS level for South Alabama, Perry coached placekicker Michel Chapuseaux who set a school record for scoring with 84 points. Chapuseaux hit 20 field goals last season, the second most in Sun Belt Conference history. South Alabama had four running backs with over 200 yards rushing last season. In 2011, Perry coached placekicker Jordan Means, who connected on 13-of-15 field goals and was South Alabama's first All-American after he was honored by the Beyond Sports College Network. read more: http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=1800&ATCLID=205979565
  6. "We played them [North Texas] last year there and I was real impressed with the facilities they have there. My family was able to come, which was nice because my family doesn't usually get to come to the games. That was special. When they lost their special teams coordinator to Arkansas State we were able to get a dialogue going. "The more I found out about Dan McCarney (head coach) and when you look at it, it's so close to both Angela's parents and my parents. It was a hard deal not to take it. It's a little bit of a (pay) bump too, which is always nice. But it came down to location, my roots in recruiting and being so close to my family.'' Perry was known for his booming voice and enthusiasm during South Alabama practices and games, especially in working with special teams. 'The whole reason I came here was to do something nobody's ever done before; to take something from scratch, to take something from nothing,'' Perry said. "I think especially in special teams we were compared against anybody we played and I don't think there was anybody we lined up with while we were here that we weren't competitive with on special teams. That's a really great feeling to have when you can go out on an ACC field or a SEC field and know you can hold your own and maybe be a little dangerous. Look at the kickers we were able to produce in Jordan Means and Michel Chapuseaux. Then you look at some of the running backs we had that has success.'' Jags' head coach Joey Jones said he is happy for Perry and pleased with the work he produced while with the South Alabama program. "Tommy brought a lot to our football program. He's a very knowledgeable special teams guy and a great staff guy. I wish him the best at North Texas. I know he's going home - he'll be an hour away from his home and I know that means a lot to him and we wish him the best.'' Perry and his wife Angela are awaiting the birth of their second child. The baby's due date is Monday and he has been working from home in recent days because of the closeness of the due date. Perry said Jones and new boss McCarney "have both been great'' in understanding his situation and allowing him the freedom to be at home right now. 7. North Texas has found its new special teams coach. Tommy Perry, who spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at South Alabama, will join the Mean Green’s staff next season. A source within the UNT athletic department confirmed late Saturday night that the school is in the process of finalizing the addition of Perry to Dan McCarney’s staff. Perry will replace Kent Riddle, who left UNT to become the assistant head coach at Arkansas State. Perry coached the Jaguars’ running backs in addition to serving as the special teams coordinator last season. Perry is a native of Monroe, La., and spent two years at Tyler Junior College. He went on to play three years at Texas A&M as a fullback, linebacker and defensive end.
