  1. North Texas took a step backwards in the second season under head coach Dan McCarney, as they finished up at just 4-8 after winning five-games in his first year here. The Mean Green once again found it very difficult to win on the road. going just 1-6 away from Apogee Stadium and are now just 2-11 under McCarney. North Texas was one of four teams to leave the Sun Belt to join Conference USA this season. While the Mean Green will be taking a step up in competition, they could be poised for their first bowl appearance in nearly a decade (2004). After returning just 11 starters in 2011 and a mere 13 in 2012, North Texas welcomes back 17 starters this season. It will without a doubt be the best team McCarney has fielded in Denton. read more: http://www.boydsbets.com/north-texas-football-predictions/
  2. After finishing 2012 on a five-game winning streak, Rice should be Tulsa’s top challenger in the West. The Owls return 18 starters and won’t play Marshall or East Carolina during the regular season. Louisiana Tech and UTEP are neck-and-neck for the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. The Bulldogs suffered a plethora of personnel losses, but welcome Texas Tech transfer Scotty Young at quarterback. The Miners also have a transfer at quarterback – Jameill Showers from Texas A&M - but return only three starters on defense. Both teams have a new coaching staff, with UTEP under the direction of former player Sean Kugler, and Louisiana Tech led by former USF and Connecticut coach Skip Holtz. Tulane, North Texas and UTSA round out the West Division predictions. The Green Wave should show some signs of improvement in 2013, and the schedule is favorable enough to expect a run at bowl eligibility. North Texas is also making progress under third-year coach Dan McCarney, but expecting a huge jump in win total is unlikely for 2013. The Roadrunners went 8-4 in their first season on the FBS level last season. However, the schedule is very challenging, and coach Larry Coker needs another year or two to build depth in the program. 3. Unfortunately for Mitchell, his stats weren't overwhelming at North Texas. After averaging 14.7 points on 56.7 percent shooting as a freshman, Mitchell's numbers fell to 13.0 and 44 percent respectively in his sophomore season. And, even though he played three more minutes per game, Mitchell's rebounding fell from 10.3 boards per game to just 8.5. (He still blocked 2.7 shots per game as a sophomore, which is a lot for an undersized power forward) It certainly sounds like something was going on in his second season, but Mitchell may have calmed some fears at the draft combine in Chicago. Ford: ... [H]e had candid interviews with teams that suddenly made GMs much more comfortable in taking him. Was he just in the wrong situation at North Texas? If teams believe that, he's going to go a lot higher based on his talent. Givony agreed: It's pretty clear that North Texas' coaching change (Johnny Jones went to LSU, and was replaced by former Marquette assistant coach Tony Benford) affected the squad very negatively, as after losing in the Sun Belt conference Tournament finals last season, the team went 7-13 in-conference and bowed out in the first round of the tournament after being blown out by 8-12 Louisiana Lafayette. And if that was the case at North Texas, and it really was just a poisonous situation affecting an otherwise talented player, the Knicks might not even get a chance to take Mitchell with the 24th overall pick. 4. Tony Mitchell is a special talent out of North Texas. He can shoot from virtually anywhere on the floor and possesses tremendous athleticism. Projected as a late first-round pick by most mock drafts, Mitchell can provide an X-factor to any team that picks him up. At 6'8" and 235 pounds, Mitchell is somewhat small for the power forward position in the league. But he may be better suited as a hybrid type of forward because of his ability to shoot the ball. Last season, he averaged 13 points and eight rebounds per game. Not eye-popping numbers, but the team around him wasn't exactly up to the task of providing Mitchell with opportunities to succeed. In 2011-12, Mitchell made nearly 40 percent of his three-pointers. That number dipped down to 30 percent last season, but he certainly possesses the skill to hit the outside jumper. If Mitchell can show his abilities to the fullest at the combine, his stock may even rise to the level of a potential lottery pick. 5. I know that everyone wants us to play our games at Apogee as well we should. I just wonder -- I keep reading that Dallas is looking at making Fair Park a year round venue adding rides and restaurants etc. We all know that the State Fair rules. And of course Texas OU is the premier event. There is another game that pits Grambling and another SWAC conference team I believe... It appears that the State Fair runs almost a month...so let's say there are three weekends you could play two of which are taken... What some may not realize is that La. Tech somehow managed to get one of those weekend game dates this year against Army...kudos to them for that. They have it scheduled on the 28th of Sept and the Fair opens up on the 27th. I wonder if it wouldn't be worth considering trying to get a non conference away or neutral site game there? I know that we tried it before against Oklahoma State and it didn't work out very well attendance wise... Not saying we should or should not do this. Just something to consider. Dallas seems to be on the rise and they seem very committed to developing the downtown southern sectors. I love the Fair and if there was a way to incorporate it into a North Texas game it would be pretty cool. I would not be for it if it in any way would diminish what we were trying to accomplish at Apogee.

  7. 21. Utah Jazz (From Golden State Warriors): Tony Mitchell, SF/PF, North Texas The combine and pre-draft workouts may not be as important to anyone in this draft as they will be to Mitchell. An athletic forward with drool-worthy tools, the former 5-star recruit had an incredibly disappointing year with North Texas, but good workouts will remind everyone why he was projected to be lottery pick back in November. 8. 20. Tony Mitchell, PF/SF, North Texas: Aim high! In a draft full of middling prospects, it seems worth it to go after one of the biggest boom/bust guys we have seen in years. Mitchell is one of (if not the) best athlete in this class and like some of the other players on that list has not impressed this year. That said, Tony did a good job in the U-19 World Championships where he was the per-minute rebounding leader over guys like Jonas Valanciunas and Patric Young. If he can put it together, Mitchell could be an NBA starter and/or an important contributor on a strong team. Read More: http://basketball.realgm.com/article/226689/Lottery-Lowdown
  9. Every aspect of Niko Stojiljkovic’s college basketball story has been unconventional. So it stood to reason that his last hurrah in a home game at North Texas would be a little different as well. Stojiljkovic took his turn walking to center court on senior night at the Super Pit last week, but the former member of the French national team wasn’t met by his parents or his girlfriend like his teammates. Stojiljkovic was met by head coach Tony Benford and everyone else on UNT’s bench who crowded in for a senior night picture that commemorated the end of his unique journey, one Stojiljkovic didn’t want to make a few years ago. Stojiljkovic wrestled with the decision of whether to turn professional or come to the U.S. to play college basketball before electing to sign with San Francisco back in 2009. Four years, four coaches and three colleges later, Stojiljkovic is still trying to fully capitalize on his potential and is down to his last chance in the Sun Belt Conference tournament, which will begin Friday when UNT faces Louisiana-Lafayette in an opening-round game. That’s perfectly fine with the lanky 6-foot-9-inch forward with an inside-outside game and a pass-first mentality. For Stojiljkovic, the journey — one that left him alone when it comes to family for events like senior night — has been worth it, even though it didn’t turn out as he expected. 13. BOCA RATON — For 72 seconds, things couldn’t have been better for Florida Atlantic University on Saturday night. It’s those other 58 minutes and 52 seconds that were the problem. The Owls scored two touchdowns in 72 seconds but couldn’t manage much else in losing 20-14 to visiting North Texas. FAU dropped to 1-4 amid a litany of familiar problems, especially an offense that struggled to move the ball and was unable to hold onto it when it could. Two red-zone turnovers helped shove the Owls into a 17-0 hole it couldn’t escape in losing their 12th consecutive Sun Belt Conference game. “It’s the same old thing,” FAU coach Carl Pelini said. “We don’t know how to win. We have to learn how to win as a football team. When the game is on the line, we couldn’t get over the hump. When the score is 0-0, we make mistakes. Over and over again — didn’t covert in the red zone, made mistakes defensively, gave up the big play. When we’re down 17-0, then we start to play until it gets close again and the pressure is on us again, and then we don’t perform.” The Wildcat formation jump-started FAU’s offense in the third quarter, producing a 73-yard drive capped by Damian Fortner’s 11-yard run, and following a Keith Reaser interception three plays later, FAU quarterback Graham Wilbert added another 11-yard scoring run to pull within 17-14. “It seemed like momentum had changed sides,” Reaser said. “We just didn’t finish it up.” The ensuing defensive series was bizarre. The Mean Green (2-3) drove to the FAU 18-yard line before Zach Olen kicked a 36-yard field goal, but North Texas chose to take the points off the board after FAU was called for leaping over the line in an attempt to block the kick. Four plays later, Olen made a 39-yarder, but again, North Texas declined the points. This time, D’Joun Smith roughed Olen. Finally, four plays and four minutes after Olen began the exhibition of his kicking prowess, his 28-yard field goal actually did stay on the scoreboard. “It gobbled up a lot of time,” Pelini said. read more: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sports/college-football/fau-rallies-against-north-texas-but-drops-12th-str/nSP5m/
  14. Found these at the RaceTrac right next to the Sam's Club at Rayzor Ranch. I go there almost daily and they have never carried UNT gear, just A&M, Texas, Baylor, and TCU. If you get a chance, swing by there while you're in town for the game Saturday and let's show them that Mean Green gear will sell! And this is football related because we need to buy these for the football game. This post has been promoted to an article
  15. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - North Texas almost beat No. 15 Kansas State at its own game Saturday night. Using a ball-control offense devised by former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney - no stranger to matching wits with Kansas State's Bill Snyder - the Mean Green managed to keep Collin Klein, John Hubert and the rest of the Wildcats' potent offense standing on the sideline most of the night. It wasn't until Klein and Hubert scored on late touchdown runs that Kansas State finally squeezed out a 35-21 victory Saturday night. "It goes right back to your offensive line,'' McCarney said. "If you can sustain blocks and sustain some drives, you've got a chance to do that against a really outstanding Kansas State team, but in the end we just did not make enough plays. "You get into a game with Kansas State, and you don't want many three-and-outs,'' McCarney said. "We had a couple, three of those in the second half, gave that offense another chance to put a drive together and go score points.'' The Mean Green nevertheless held their Big 12 opponent to 143 yards rushing - Kansas State entered the game sixth nationally at better than 300 yards per game - while holding the ball an astonishing 37 minutes, 4 seconds, which prevented the Wildcats from getting into a rhythm. "They made more plays,'' McCarney said. "They made more big plays in the second half. That was the difference in the game.'' 16. Kansas State, ranked No. 15 in the nation, isn't taking the Mean Green of North Texas lightly, even with a showdown with 5th-ranked Oklahoma on deck. How could they? Wildcats coach Bill Snyder has his fingerprints all over the program. He coached under Hayden Fry at North Texas from 1976-78, and got his first win with K-State (and his career) over the Mean Green in 1982. Then there's the last meeting between the teams in 2010. The Wildcats won a wild 49-41 decision in Denton, Texas. K-State (3-0) will host North Texas (2-1) at 6 p.m. CT Saturday and are 28.5 point favorites. While Louisiana-Monroe proved no team can be overlooked, it would be a massive upset for the Mean Green to walk out of Manhattan with a win. The game is on FSN locally. 17. MURFREESBORO — MTSU basketball’s record-breaking season earned prime-time billing for a pair of games in the upcoming campaign. Two Blue Raider games have been picked up for national telecasts by ESPNU. MTSU’s Dec. 21 game against Vanderbilt at Bridgestone Arena will air on ESPNU. Tipoff has been moved to 8 p.m. And the same network will air the Blue Raiders’ home game versus North Texas at Murphy Center on New Year’s Eve at 7 p.m. “The national exposure your university and program get when playing on the ESPN networks is fantastic,” MTSU coach Kermit Davis said. “Last year, we ended up having 15 televised games, and that was exciting for fans to see. To have two home games on ESPNU already this year is not only another great opportunity for our basketball program to grow, but it’s also a chance to see fantastic crowds fill Murphy Center and Bridgestone Arena.” MTSU posted a program-record 27 victories last season, including signature wins against UCLA, Ole Miss and Tennessee and a trip to the NIT quarterfinal. The Vandy and North Texas games have the makings of good matchups. Read more: http://www.dnj.com/article/20120911/BLUERAIDERS02/309110021/ESPNU-picks-up-2-MTSU-men-s-hoops-games
  18. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Kenny Hilliard and Alfred Blue rewarded Les Miles' decision to designate them as LSU's top two running backs in the season opener, and they more than compensated for any shortcomings associated with Zach Mettenberger's first start. Hilliard rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 3 LSU opened its season with a 41-14 victory over North Texas on Saturday night. While the heavily favored Tigers were never threatened, their performance did not always thrill a Death Valley crowd that eagerly awaited evidence that LSU's passing game would be much improved with Mettenberger under center. Mettenberger, who was briefly sidelined by a vicious sack, was 19 of 26 for 192 yards, an interception and a touchdown. But LSU didn't really need to throw in a game decided by its overwhelming defense and a running game that accounted for 316 yards, including 123 by Blue. Derek Thompson completed only 8 of 21 passes, but two passes were scoring strikes of 80 and 15 yards to Brelan Chancellor. Odell Beckham Jr., taking over punt return duties after 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu was dismissed on Aug. 10, ran one back 70 yards for a score. He nearly had two returns for scores, but his 76-yard runback was negated by Jarvis Landry's illegal block. Landry made up for it with eight catches for 82 yards, including two diving receptions, one of which he hauled in with one hand. Read more: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=322450099
  19. No. 13: Is Tony Mitchell an All-American for North Texas? North Texas lost its successful long-time coach Johnny Jones to LSU, but the Mean Green didn’t lose its star player. The 6-8, 235-pound Tony Mitchell, a former Missouri signee before he was an academic nonqualifier, may be North Texas’ top player since the 1970s and could make a run at some postseason hardware after averaging 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds last season. 21. A prior relationship with Buzz Williams, as well as Williams’ track record with junior college players attracted Taylor to Marquette, where he said he was looking forward to proving people wrong playing the underdog role. But it didn’t last long. Just two weeks into his stay in Milwaukee, Taylor left the program. He couldn’t be reached for comment yesterday, but rumors have floated about the Texas native feeling home sick. A source also said Tony Benford, Taylor’s lead recruiter, leaving for North Texas’ head coaching position did not help matters. Taylor has enough talent to latch on elsewhere, perhaps closer to home (perhaps at North Texas with Benford). Regardless, Marquette now finds itself in a bind in the back court, a statement which would have been laughable two seasons ago. read more: http://painttouches.com/2012/07/19/what-t-j-taylors-departure-means-for-marquette/

  23. May 4, 2012 North Texas Accepts Invitation for Membership to Conference USA Mean Green and Four Other Schools to Begin New Affiliation in 2013 DENTON, Texas -- Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky today announced that the University of North Texas has been extended and accepted an invitation for Conference USA membership, effective July 1, 2013. North Texas is one of five schools that will be joining Conference USA, along with the University of Texas-San Antonio, Louisiana Tech University, Florida International University and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. “This is validation that the progress we have made in our athletic programs in conjunction with our university’s academic reputation has made us a suitable fit for the high standards of Conference USA,” Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal said. “Conference USA provides a great partnership with several schools in our geographic proximity and will help all of us create outstanding regional rivalries. It is a tremendous opportunity for North Texas athletics.” Each new member will join the league in all sports for 2013, Charlotte will begin conference participation in football in 2015. The metro area population of these schools is nearly 18 million. Existing members are East Carolina University, Marshall University, Rice University, University of Southern Mississippi, Tulane University, The University of Tulsa, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). Divisions will be set in the near future. The 13 members will also allow the Conference to continue to host its annual Football Championship game pitting champions from the East and West Divisions. “The presidents and chancellors of Conference USA universities are pleased to welcome these five distinguished institutions to CUSA,” said Dr. Scott Cowen, Tulane University president and Chair of Conference USA’s Board of Directors. “Conference USA has always operated in a way that reflects the values of higher education and works very hard to balance the athletics and academic interests of its student-athletes at the highest level. These institutions clearly share those values.” North Texas will be joining Conference USA after competing as a member of the Sun Belt Conference since 2001. In 11 years as a Sun Belt member, North Texas won 20 conference championships in 10 different sports. The Mean Green represented the Sun Belt in four bowl games and two NCAA men’s basketball tournament appearances. The new conference affiliation means North Texas will be in a league with three other schools in the state of Texas and three more schools in bordering states. In all, seven members of the new Conference USA will be within 650 miles of Denton. Only three of the football-playing members in the Sun Belt Conference are within 650 miles of Denton. “The welfare of our student-athletes was definitely a key consideration for us in making this decision,” Villarreal said. “With so many schools in relative close proximity to our campus we will minimize the amount of missed class time and minimize the amount of time spent traveling to and from competition.” Conference USA will be the eighth conference that North Texas has been a member of since the inception of its athletics program in 1913.
