  1. Regular visitors to this region understand what writer D.H. Lawrence meant when he said, "Touch this country and you will never be the same again." Santa Fe, New Mexico -- For flatlanders escaping sizzling temperatures, summer in Santa Fe means enjoying the cool, refreshing mornings and pleasant evenings that come with the city's elevation of 7,199 feet. Welcome to the state capital with the highest elevation. Founded in 1610, this is also the oldest state capital in the United States. Summer is Santa Fe is an afternoon shower that blows in from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to bring a welcome respite from the summer sun as shoppers study the wares of street vendors in the Plaza, the heart of downtown Santa Fe. Native American artists line the sidewalk in front of the Palace of the Governors which dates back to 1610. Custom jewelry and art are displayed on blankets and vendors can describe every detail about their particular craft. Even the most ambitious visitors eventually learn to pace themselves because, if you include the St. Francis Dr./Railyard area and the loop of Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe is home to almost 1,000 unique boutiques and shops. Along with shopping and spicy cuisine, art is another theme woven into the colorful fabric that is Santa Fe and the countless examples of public art are only a hint of what this city has to offer. With more than 250 art galleries to explore, only New York City can boast of more galleries. Santa Fe has earned a reputation as one of the world's great art cities, although the local art scene dates back to humble beginnings in the 1920s when recently relocated painters Josef Bakos, Willard Nash, Will Shuster, Walter Mruk and Fremont Ellis began assembling simple adobe structures along Camino del Monte Sol. Jokingly calling themselves "five nuts in mud huts," all five were influential artists who launched a legacy that contemporary Santa Fe artists continue to expand. read more: http://www.ntxe-news.com/artman/publish/article_125013.shtml
  2. Top Challenger: North Texas Mean Green North Texas has ranked either first or second in Conference USA in passing yards per game in each of the past four seasons. Replacing Darden's 1,190 yards and 19 touchdowns from last season alone won't be easy, but the combo of Jyaire Shorter and Deonte Simpson will at least give the Mean Green a chance. Shorter missed most of last season, but he has averaged slightly better than 20 yards per reception in his career and had nine touchdowns in 2019. Simpson went for 20.7 yards per catch in 2020 as one of the top deep threats in the league. Keep an Eye on: SMU Mustangs SMU has three returning receivers who amassed at least 400 yards last season, most notably Reggie Roberson Jr., who had 474 yards in the team's first four games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The Mustangs also bring in former Oklahoma tight end Grant Calcaterra, which should help soften the blow of losing Kylen Granson (1,257 receiving yards, 14 touchdowns over the past two seasons) to the NFL draft. He'll be reunited with fellow Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai, who is (presumably) finally going to get his shot as a starting quarterback. read more: https://www.google.com/amp/s/syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2945279-projecting-every-conferences-best-receiving-corps-for-the-2021-cfb-season.amp.html
  3. The Wearin' of the (Mean) Green SMU and TCU each have a lengthy and well-documented tradition of excellence in football. Until the troubles of the 1980s, the Southwest Conference in which they played was the stuff of legend. That isn't necessarily true for North Texas, which begins its second season in the Big West Conference. The Mean Green has traditions of its own, but it's been in seven different conferences or alignments and never has enjoyed the prominence of the Metroplex's other squads. However, with the population boom north of Dallas-Fort Worth, UNT has the opportunity to develop a regional audience, Helwig said. "The growth of the Metroplex is out here," he points out. "With the (Texas Motor) Speedway, and Intel going into Alliance, we're at the tip of the triangle. It's a tremendous advantage to have access to this population base. There are 41/2 to 5 million people here, which is more than Kansas State, Nebraska or Oklahoma (universities). And that's right in this immediate area." With that population base, the North Texas Eagles have mounted a strong campaign to win the hearts of Denton fans. "We don't have to be the ticket for the Metroplex, but if we could be the ticket for Denton County, we'd be in good shape," Helwig said. "There have been marketing studies done, and we've utilized direct mail. We do a lot of marketing within this county. We're working with the Denton Chamber of Commerce." Helwig has a smaller budget to work with -- $5.7 million in 1995-96 -- but doesn't have to support the expense of private-school scholarships, as Copeland and Windegger do. At the moment, though, UNT is in the position of being cannon fodder. The Mean Green will play Big 12 heavyweights Texas A&M and Texas Tech this season, along with Oregon State of the Pac-10, after losing to Vanderbilt from the SEC in their opener, 29-12. Those games offer six-figure guarantees to the Eagles, as well as giving them tough tests before the conference season opens Oct. 4 when they take on Idaho. read more: https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/1997/09/08/story3.html
  4. 112. North Texas After winning 18 games from 2017-18, the Mean Green have slipped to an 8-14 record over the last two years. Scoring points won’t be a problem for coach Seth Littrell’s team in ’21. However, the defense has to show marked improvement to get back to a bowl. Offensive Strength: The Mean Green led Conference USA in scoring (34.4 ppg), yards per play (6.6), and most gains of 40-plus yards (19) last season. Littrell has to sort out an intriguing quarterback battle between Austin Aune and former North Carolina signal-caller Jace Ruder, but this unit should be explosive once again. DeAndre Torrey and Oscar Adaway III lead a strong backfield, and four starters return from one of the top lines in the league. A healthy Jyaire Shorter at receiver will help replace the production left behind by Jaelon Darden. Offensive Concern: Can Aune or Ruder claim the job and play with enough consistency to keep the offense on track all year? Shorter’s return is huge, but North Texas needs a couple of other playmakers to emerge at receiver. The offense has to do a better job at managing turnovers after losing 15 in 2020. Defensive Strength: Littrell’s hire of veteran coordinator Phil Bennett was a strong move to get a struggling defense pointed in the right direction. Tackle Dion Novil and linebackers Tyreke Davis and KD Davis are three key players among nine returning defensive starters for North Texas in 2021. Defensive Concern: This unit allowed a whopping 42.8 points a game and surrendered 6.94 yards per play last season. Even with a new play-caller and help through the transfer portal, major improvement might be a year away. read more: https://athlonsports.com/college-football/college-football-top-130-team-rankings-2021
  5. HUNTINGTON — The good news is that North Texas’ offense was the best offense in Conference USA last season. The bad news that the North Texas defense was one of the worst defenses in FBS, if not THE worst. That porous defense led Seth Littell’s bunch to a losing record overall and even in Conference USA, which was not the expectation coming into a season in which they featured one of the nation’s best receivers in Jaelon Darden. Unfortunately for the Mean Green, Darden is gone to the NFL and the defensive problems still are present. Former SMU head coach Phil Bennett takes over the defense, which is a big step forward, but North Texas needs more than Bennett’s expertise to fix a defense that allowed an FBS-worst 43 points while also yielding 522 yards per game. The good news for Bennett is that, from a production standpoint, there are plenty of pieces returning who can help. Up front, All-Conference USA tackle Dion Novil returns and there is young talent at the end spots with Grayson and Gabriel Murphy, but defending the run and getting a more consistent pass rush are pivotal to improving the 2020 numbers. read more: https://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/2021-marshall-football-opponents-north-texas-has-to-improve-defense/article_88448e57-cd3f-5230-9726-58e5c1f6a1be.html
  6. The University of North Texas –- like the region it is named for -– is growing quickly. There are now 39,330 UNT undergraduate and graduate students enrolled, which is the most ever. That enrollment figure represents a 3% increase from the 2018-2019 academic year, according to figures from the university. In addition to overall enrollment being up, UNT also touts its largest-ever freshman class this fall. A record 5,522 freshman are on campus, which is an increase of 15.3% in "first time college students at the university," according to a UNT news release. And the University of North Texas is also retaining more of its students than ever before. This fall nearly 80% of last year’s freshman class returned to UNT, according to enrollment data, which is an increase of 1.6% over the fall of 2018. read more: https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/University-of-North-Texas-Sees-Record-Enrollment-This-Fall-560464341.html

  9. SMU’s season opener could not have gone worse. The Mustangs were outgained, outplayed and outcoached in Saturday night’s 46-23 loss to North Texas at Apogee Stadium in Denton. “Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” SMU head coach Sonny Dykes said. SMU’s offense looked out of sync for the better part of the night. It started on the first drive, when the Mustangs went three and out after two penalties and a sack. Five of the Mustangs’ six first-half possessions ended in punts. On four of those drives, SMU went three and out. By the end of the first half, the Mustangs had just 24 total yards in the first half and only 46 by the end of the third quarter. “We never could get anything going,” Dykes said. “We couldn’t get on track. It just seemed like we were sluggish.” Ben Hicks’ struggles echoed those of the Mustangs’. He was under pressure all night long and had trouble throwing accurate passes to his receivers. He only completed three passes for 27 yards in the first half and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by North Texas’ Kemon Brooks to put the Mean Green up 14-0. Hicks rebounded in the fourth quarter, completing six of nine passes for 197 yards and two scores, but it was too little, too late. read more: http://www.smudailycampus.com/sports/everything-that-could-go-wrong-went-wrong
  10. The Mean Green could be a threat if they can get their defense up to speed with their offense. They’re a one sided opponent - outscore them, because they can go on offense but they can’t dictate pace." "Strong offense, the wide receiver from Notre Dame [Jaylen Guyton] really stands out on film." "The offensive system is interesting, they’re doing more experimental stuff than you’d expect from a Leach tree OC [Graham Harrell].” read more: https://www.google.com/amp/s/athlonsports.com/college-football/c-usa-coaches-talk-anonymously-about-conference-foes-2018%3Famp
  11. Joe Greene met his wife Agnes at the University of North Texas over 50 years ago. This summer, Joe Greene was back near campus to announce the start of the Agnes Lucille Craft Greene Memorial Scholarship named in his late wife's honor. Agnes Greene passed away after battling breast cancer in 2015. The scholarships will be presented annually to students at North Texas whose parents have battled cancer, with breast cancer "being a particular focus since that tragically took her life." “Not only the scholarship, but my kids, Major, Delon and JoQuel, they wanted to honor their mother in that way, to put a scholarship in her name at her school that she loved so much, to provide assistance to young people whose parents also had issues with cancer,” Greene said, via Steelers.com's Teresa Varley. “It’s a doubly important angle. It’s honoring her, and helping others. It’s important for me that Agnes, her name will be serving a wonderful purpose at North Texas and students will have an opportunity to extend their education. read more: https://247sports.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/Article/Pittsburgh-Steelers-Joe-Greene-honors-late-wife-with-scholarship-fund-119551445/
  12. BOCA RATON For the first time since 2008, Florida Atlantic is preparing for postseason play. Though FAU (9-3, 8-0) clinched bowl eligibility on Nov. 3 and a spot in the Conference USA championship game earlier this month, the Owls are now officially getting ready for their first postseason game since a 24-21 win in Detroit over Central Michigan on Dec. 26, 2008 in the Motor City Bowl. FAU completed the fourth 8-0 season in C-USA history with last Saturday’s 31-12 win over Charlotte. Saturday’s C-USA title game pits FAU against North Texas (9-3, 7-1), a team the Owls beat 69-31 on Oct. 21. “I feel like we’ve done a lot, we’ve accomplished a lot,” FAU linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair said. “We’re not where we want to be, but looking back, we’ve done a lot of progress in the summer and even in December when the coaches first got here.” As the Sun Belt conference — FAU’s home from 2004-12 — does not have a championship game, the Owls will be playing in their first FBS title game. Here are some of the key details FAU fans need to know prior to Saturday’s C-USA title game. read more: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/college-football/after-perfect-conference-usa-season-fau-set-for-first-title-game/udHM8yHEcVglqquUBp61KL/

  14. DENTON, Texas (AP) — Trevor Moore kicked a 39-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to give North Texas a wild 52-49 victory over Army on Saturday night, ending the Black Knights' six-game winning streak. Mason Fine threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns, including a quick 10-yard toss with no timeouts left to get the Mean Green (8-3) a little closer for Moore's winning kick. The longest winning streak for Army (8-3) since 1996 ended despite 244 yards rushing and two touchdowns from quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw. "My most important thing is winning football games," said Bradshaw, who set Army's single-season rushing record at 1,472 yards, breaking Collin Mooney's 9-year-old record of 1,339. "If I have zero yards and we win the game, I'll be happier than having a million yards and losing the game." read more: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/11/18/late-fg-lifts-north-texas-to-wild-52-49-victory-over-army/107842444/
  15. Heading into a critical game against Western Kentucky Thursday night in Denton. North Texas is currently ranked 55th while WKU is ranked 32. If North Texas beats WKU this team should shoot up in the rankings, but my question is this. Is wining the conference tournament North Texas’ only path into the NCAA Tournament? Or could North Texas still get in based on strength of schedule or rankings? Excited to see how this unfolds as I can’t remember when the last time the volleyball team was in a position to make the NCAA tournament. -GMG! http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1

  17. I've seen this posted in the past and I liked it! Who got cool UNT stuff this year? Pics are certainly welcome and encouraged so that you can show off all your awesome UNT stuff. I got a sweet UNT alum coffee mug, which I am quite proud of and will use boldly and often. I also got a really nice dry-fit UNT pullover from my sweet, clean bride. But the coup de grâce are these bad boys in the pic below!! I was then informed by my wife that the new pullover was for wearing tomorrow to the game. It was pretty cool, she had this ruse going that her family had already planned for us all to be at their place because her grandmother is in town. I was told there would be lots of food, but that they'd have the game on and I could watch it however I see fit. Turns out, they were all in on it and they're watching the kiddos while the wife and I go to the game. YES!!! Side note -- anyone taking the DART Green rail, which station is closer to the stadium? The Fair Park station or the MLK station?

  20. In the five years since the University of North Texas’s Apogee Stadium opened, the $78 million home base for the Mean Green has seemed like a complete waste. UNT’s football team is about as functional as putting an orange in a keyhole to open a door. But even if UNT isn’t breaking records on the football field (last season the team won exactly one game), it is setting the curve for sustainability. Apogee Stadium is “the first newly constructed collegiate football stadium in the nation to achieve the highest level of LEED certification,” or LEED Platinum. Leading the way in sustainability, environmental research, and energy consumption is a wonderful achievement for any university. And it looks like using football as a conduit to accomplish tangible milestones (which, apparently, doesn’t include a winning team) seems to be a trend that suits UNT nicely. UNT is in the beginning stages of entering an exclusive agreement with the Dallas Cowboys, which certainly raises some eyebrows considering the game of football is bleak in Denton. Nevertheless, the collaboration looks like it could be particularly valuable for the school’s academics. Last Thursday and Friday, UNT’s Board of Regents discussed and voted on whether or not the University of North Texas System Chancellor Lee Jackson and President Neal Smatresk would be allowed to draw up a deal with the Cowboys without the board’s oversight. Unanimously, the board voted yes. The deal is in its infancy and certainly subject to change, but the potential terms see UNT paying the Cowboys $1 million or more in order to become a “Proud Partner of the Dallas Cowboys.” According to a meeting memo, this would allow UNT to use the “team’s star and other primary logos; a blend of digital in-stadium, in restaurant and concourse advertising at The Ford Center and AT&T Stadium; digital mixed-use exterior banner and highway marquee advertising; select event exhibit space; game-day radio spots; preseason network and Jason Garrett show televised commercials; and a microsite and ads on the DallasCowboys.com web site.” - See more at: http://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/unt-cowboys-partnership/#sthash.W1O7qGAc.dpuf Here is a link to the UNT memo on this subject: http://static.texastribune.org/media/documents/05.19.-20.16_Board_Book.pdf
