  1. UNT backup safety John Schilleci was arrested on a charge of evading arrest over the weekend and was released on $500 bail. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/breaking-news-unt-player-arrested-over-weekend.html/
  2. I posted five quick (and I do mean quick) thoughts before running down to the field following UNT’s 43-6 win over SMU today at Fouts Field. Now that I’ve filed my stories for both papers, I’m back with some more detailed thoughts and notes. Quite honestly, I pretty shocked with the way it went. I picked UNT to win, but I thought it was a game that could go either way and would be decided in the last couple of minutes. I never thought that UNT would blow out SMU like that. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/follow-up-notes-quotes-thoughts.html/
  3. There might not be a more rabid North Texas supporter than George Dunham. Dunham, one half of the “Dunham & Miller” show on SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket, is a UNT graduate and the voice of the Mean Green. His son Blake is a senior deep snapper at UNT. Part of Dunham’s duties with UNT is appearing on head coach Dan McCarney’s weekly radio show on Monday night. UNT plays the Mustangs at 11 a.m. on Saturday, which led to Dunham going on a rant about his feelings about SMU. McCarney has said throughout the offseason and the buildup the game that the UNT-SMU game that the schools are not rivals in football, largely because the Mustangs have dominated the series. The Mustangs edge stands at 28-4-1 heading into this year’s showdown at Apogee Stadium. 4. Tomorrow is a big day for us here at the Denton Record-Chronicle. Our annual football magazine will be in the paper and on the newsstands. It’s a project that takes months to put together and pretty much puts life on hold for our staff for the final two-week push to get the 120-page monster done. In our humble opinion, it’s the best publication we put out all year and one of the best of its kind in the nation. We have evidence to support that claim. The Record-Chronicle has earned six straight top 10 honors in the Associated Press Sports Editors special section category for newspapers of our size. 5. We are getting closer and closer to UNT’s opener at Texas in a couple of weeks. While we sit and wait for UNT to officially announce its starting quarterback, let’s look at one of the key matchups when it comes to the Mean Green’s opener. There might not be a bigger challenge for UNT than having its defensive line hold up. Let’s look at the lineups: This is what Texas’ lineup could look like on its offensive line: Center – Dominic Espinosa, 6-2, 308 Guard — Sedrick Flowers, 6-3, 320 Guard Taylor Doyle, 6-5, 300 Tackle — Kent Perkins, 6-5, 330 Tackle — Kennedy Estelle, 6-6, 285 Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/08/key-questions-for-texas-game-can-unts-defensive-line-hold.html/
  6. UNT will begin fall practice Monday afternoon. Workouts are closed, but there are several key story lines that can be tracked through what the Mean Greens coaches and players have to say. Here are a few issues of interest heading into the opening of a new season. 1. What does UNT's offense look like with so many new players at key spots? UNT will continue the search for a new starting quarterback today when Andrew McNulty and Josh Greer will alternate snaps with the first and second teams. McNulty, a career backup, and Greer, a JUCO transfer, appear to have the best chance to win the starting job. Head coach Dan McCarney has been careful to say that Dajon Williams and Connor Means are not out of the hunt yet, though. 7. And so it begins. UNT’s players are set to report today for the beginning of fall practice tomorrow. A few years ago, in another era of college football — and UNT football — there was always the possibility of a few surprises in terms of who shows up. I don’t expect that to be the case this year. Football is a year-round endeavor now for teams and players. UNT’s guys have been around most of the summer. I will check in just to see, though. Stay tuned. 8. UNT coach Dan McCarney was a popular guy at Conference USA media day this week. He took a minute or two to shoot a video with me. We talked a little about the upcoming season and where the Mean Green is at as the beginning of two-a-days on Aug. 5 looms. I wrote a story and a notebook for today’s paper on what went down at media day. The big topic of the day was the changing landscape in college athletics and full cost of attendance scholarships. Conference USA will go in that direction, one that will provide players more money to live than they have in the past. That issue ties in with the top five conferences in college football potentially being granted autonomy from the rest of the schools in college athletics. It’s going to happen — likely in a couple of weeks. We covered both topics in today’s main story. 9. Conference USA announced its preliminary television schedule today. The good news for UNT is that the Mean Green will be on television a ton coming up this season. Here’s the schedule: Saturday, Aug. 30 — UNT at Texas, 7 p.m., Longhorn Network Saturday Sept. 6 — SMU at UNT, 11 a.m., Fox Sports Net Thursday Sept. 11 — Louisiana Tech at UNT, 7 p.m., CBS Sports Network Saturday Oct. 25 — North Texas at Rice, TBA, FOX Sports 1 or FSN Saturday, Nov. 8 — Florida Atlantic at UNT, 6 p.m., Fox College Sports Saturday, Nov. 15 — North Texas at UTEP, TBA, FOX Sports 1 or FSN Saturday, Nov. 29 — North Texas at UTSA, TBA, FOX Sports 1 or FSN read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/05/unt-will-be-on-tv-a-ton-this-year-sked-and-thoughts.html/
  10. Egi Gjikondi, a former Alabama State signee, finished up his official visit to UNT today. Gjikondi, a 6-8 power forward, said he enjoyed his time at UNT and what the school has to offer. “The thing that stuck out was the chance to be at a big place and on a big campus,” Gjikondi said. “They have a good business major and have a lot of diversity on campus.” The question now is whether or not Gjikondi will end up being a part of UNT’s plans. UNT did not offer him a scholarship while he was on campus. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/05/catching-up-with-egi-gjikondi.html/
  11. Terri Cuffie sat behind the North Texas bench at Halton Arena earlier this season, holding one of the few people in the stands wearing Mean Green apparel. One-year-old Anthony Williams watched attentively during that game in Charlotte, N.C., back in January, his green UNT sweatshirt pulled over a black T-shirt, as his father, Alzee Williams, sprinted up and down the floor in a game the Mean Green lost on a buzzer-beating dunk. Seeing Terrence Williams slam home the game winner was tough for the Mean Green, but Alzee Williams, a senior guard, had a smile spread across his face as he stood holding his son, tears streaming down his face, after the final horn. 12. Jordan Richmond, a former Denton Ryan standout who began his career at Texas A&M, is now on UNT’s roster. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/02/former-ryan-standout-on-unt-roster.html/
  13. One of the names that has popped up in the final hours before signing day Bo Pullin, an offensive lineman from Victoria East. Here’s the story. Pullin is a big kid who is coming to UNT as a preferred walk-on, according to Victoria East coach Roland Gonzalez. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/02/the-story-on-bo-pullin.html/
  14. We will have a story this Sunday on Johnny Quinn, a former UNT wide receiver who will compete in the Olympics in the bobsled. I talked to a few people who were at UNT when Quinn was on his way to becoming one of the great players in program history. A couple had a some interesting things to say … – Zach Muzzy, one of the other receivers at UNT during Quinn’s time at the school, is now the wide receivers coach at Clear Creek in Houston after spending some time on the staff at Alvin, his alma mater.
  15. The UNT women’s basketball team will take on Tulsa tonight at the Super Pit. UNT has played really well at times this season, but has a baffling habit of playing poorly for long stretches that have killed the Mean Green. We look a look at the issue in today’s paper. Coach Mike Petersen is just as baffled by UNT’s issues as everyone else. UNT has a habit of turning the ball over in bunches at the worst times. Petersen does make a good point in that UNT has led late in all but one of its conference games. I chatted with freshman point guard Candice Adams about where UNT stands in the video at the top of this post. 17. UNT has spent a little time celebrating its win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That can mean only one thing — It’s time to turn the attention to the off-season. Over the next few weeks, we will do the same here on the blog and go over a few of the questions that UNT is facing. Today, we begin with No. 1 — Who will replace Derek Thompson at quarterback? My feelings on Thompson and his contributions are pretty well known. Thompson wasn’t an all-conference player. He had some off games, but he also came up big plenty of times for UNT throughout his career and especially in his senior season. Thompson threw for 256 yards in UNT’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl and finished with 2,896 yards as a senior. He completed 64.4 percent of his passes and threw 16 touchdown passes. 18. The fallout from UNT’s breakout football season continued today when the USA Today Coaches Poll came out. UNT received two votes in the poll. It’s been a long time since UNT received votes. I’m not exactly sure what year it was, but the Mean Green received a vote in either the preseason or postseason poll back in the bowl run of the early- to mid-2000s. In an interesting twist, Louisiana-Lafayette also received a vote. We went over this a while back, but ULL and UNT rank first and second, respectively, for the longest AP Top 25 poll drought nationally. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/tuesday-afternoon-notes-unt-receives-top-25-votes.html/
  19. UNT fans will be talking about the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl for years. The win — and the Mean Green’s breakout season in general — changed the course of the program. We will share our thoughts on how over the next few weeks/months. Before we do, we ought to stop to consider the legacy of UNT’s senior class. We wrote about it quite a bit in the days leading up to the Heart of Dallas Bowl and in the wake of UNT’s win in the paper. What we haven’t done is talk about it much on the blog — a place where we can be a little more opinionated. 20. he season is over, but there is always something happening on the football front. Here are a few news items from the world of the Mean Green. – A UNT source said in the days leading up to the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl that the school was in the final stages of completing a contract extension for Dan McCarney. A second source with direct knowledge of the situation said that the school and McCarney are close to finishing out the deal. 21. Ok, now that I have caught your attention, this might not be as exciting as the headline makes it sound. But still. Vince Sanders, a wide receiver who was a career backup at Guyer, went to junior college and found his way to Baylor as a walk-on, plans to transfer to UNT and walk on with the Mean Green. 22. In the next day or so (now that I have had some recovery time after the Heart of Dallas Bowl) we will look back on a breakout season for UNT and forward to the future following the Mean Green’s 36-14 win over UNLV in its first bowl since 2004. There is so much to talk about. There’s the great finish for UNT’s seniors, the way UNT’s win over UNLV will affect the future of the program, what UNT will do with its last couple of scholarship spots, what the key holes to fill next year are and what the key questions heading into next season will be. But first, the important stuff — GYROTR. That would be the Get Your Rear on the Record contest. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/get-your-rear-on-the-record-review.html/
  23. Dan Kottmann, a former Guyer standout defensive tackle who spend two seasons at San Diego State, confirmed late Thursday night that he is planning to enroll at UNT in the next few days and will likely participate in spring practice. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/former-guyer-standout-plans-to-enroll-at-unt-will-be-updated.html/
  24. I stopped by UNT basketball practice today to pick up some material for the paper and the blog. The video at the top is one I shot with UNT men’s head coach Tony Benford and senior guard Alzee Williams. UNT’s win 61-41 over Texas A&M on New Year’s Eve kind of got lost in the euphoria of the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That’s understandable. 25. UNT is getting down to the bitter end when it comes to putting its 2014 recruiting class together. The Mean Green picked up commitments from a pair of junior college players here in the last few days. We told you all about quarterback Josh Greer and linebacker A.J. Smith a couple of days ago on the blog and in the paper. Official confirmation came today, although I was told that Greer can’t sign his national letter of intent until later this month. Well, he can sign it, but I don’t think UNT can turn it in to the NCAA until later.
