  2. UNT rallies from 18 down to beat Ball State By Brett Vito / Staff Writer Published: 14 September 2013 11:49 PM Derek Thompson came up holding his right hand after a push from a Ball State player sent him sailing over the North Texas bench and out of the game Saturday at Apogee Stadium. Fortunately for the Mean Green, the senior quarterback was able to get up off the deck and help UNT do the same in a 34-27 come-from-behind win over the Cardinals. The Mean Green had a grand opportunity in its second home game of the season to reach a host of milestones and take a big step toward the six-win mark that is its stated baseline goal for this season. That opportunity appeared to be slipping away after UNT got off to a horrible start and trailed 27-9 in the second quarter. There were several players who helped the Mean Green recover, from hard-hitting safety Marcus Trice to Zach Orr, the anchor of UNT’s defense. Just don’t forget Thompson, who scored the game-winning touchdown to cap a run of 25 UNT points to close the game after his ill-fated flop over the bench. The resolve Thompson and the Mean Green showed while recovering from some down times gave UNT a 2-1 start — its best since it resumed playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1995. “This is a great win for our program,” UNT coach Dan McCarney said. “We showed great resolve, heart and courage. When you dig a hole like we did for ourselves, it’s hard. But we were able to make enough big plays.” Thompson made several while throwing for 274 yards against the Cardinals (2-1). The former Glen Rose standout isn’t known for his speed but scored the winning touchdown on a 26-yard run. Thompson made that play after safety Martez Hester shoved him out of bounds on the UNT sideline, sending him over the Mean Green’s bench. “My thumb locked up on me and started cramping,” Thompson said. “I wasn’t sure what was wrong. I couldn’t move my thumb, which scared me a little.” Thompson quickly recovered and returned to finish a solid performance, one UNT needed after falling behind. 3. A few days ago, I had started to second-guess my assumption that somehow, some way, Derek Thompson was going to end up starting the season at quarterback for UNT. Dan McCarney talked about freshman Dajon Williams like he might be the second-coming of Scott Hall (and he still might be). No one would rule Brock Berglund out of the race (at least not publicly) and I kind of wondered if UNT might shock everyone and roll Andrew McNulty out there. Well, its looking more and more like my original assumption and the guess of a lot of people is coming to fruition. McCarney said today that Thompson answered the bell in the key scrimmage of fall practice and (in so many words) indicated that he is in position to start the season as UNTs starting quarterback. Let the gnashing of teeth begin. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-derek-thompson-back-on-top.html/
  4. As expected, UNT head coach Dan McCarney named Derek Thompson the Mean Green’s starting quarterback during the C-USA teleconference. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/08/mccarney-names-starter.html/ Keep checking the link as more is being added on this story....
  5. For the last two seasons, the man handed the responsibility of carrying the Mean Green offense has been senior quarterback Derek Thompson. That could no longer be the case, as head coach Dan McCarney opened competition at the position this offseason, giving the four eligible quarterbacks on the depth chart the opportunity to compete to start week one when the University of Idaho comes to town. “Even though we started preparing for Idaho earlier this week, we still take about three fourths of the practice to compete and evaluate the position,” McCarney said. “It’s fun to see because there really is some real competition going on right now and these guys all want to be the one to lead the team.” Derek Thompson Thompson has the experience in starting and the strongest chemistry with his receivers because of his starting role the last two years with the team. In his two years as a starter, Thompson has accumulated 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with a completion percentage of more than 57 percent. He produced just 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last year. McCarney said Thompson has been taking snaps solely with the first string offense. “As far as the quarterback position goes this is the most depth we have ever had here,” Thompson said. “Any competition is good competition and we push each other and coach each other.” Read more: http://ntdaily.com/quarterback-unt-football-team-undecided/
  6. I was thinking about the fact that last year McNulty redshirted with the injury and it never appeared that the coaching staff felt comfortable with Oz... Is it a fair assumption to say with the paper thin depth at QB that UNT was doing everything possible to protect DT and in the process sort of dumbed down what we did? We all know he was releasing the ball VERY quickly and there were very few sacks given up. It seems to me that with McNulty back, Berglund and now the freshman Williams you have more depth and that might allow them to unleash DT (especially with designed QB draw/run plays) more than they did last year. I'm pretty sure our depth chart for most of last season was DT and Osborn? Everything after that was walk-ons once McNulty was lost.
  7. Dan McCarney said today that Derek Thompson is taking all the snaps with the first team. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/

  9. Dan McCarney got a long look at all three quarterbacks who are in the race to start in North Texas season opener against Idaho during the Mean Greens first full scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday. What UNTs head coach saw convinced him that he hasnt seen enough yet to declare a winner. Returning starter Derek Thompson, backup Andrew McNulty and Brock Berglund, a transfer from Kansas in his first season at UNT, all saw time with UNTs first-team offense during the workout that lasted 136 plays. The Mean Green struggled to get anything going offensively with any of those quarterbacks and will head into the second week of fall camp without a clear pecking order among them as time creeps toward the Aug. 31 opener. We are inconsistent, McCarney said. Nobody is bad, but no one is playing to the level that we need them to right now. Its not any one guy. All of them need to elevate their performance and be more consistent. We are going to grade all these snaps and see where the depth chart falls heading into the second week of camp. Thompson has started each of the last two seasons and received the most time with the first-team offense among the three players competing for the starting job. Thompson has thrown for 4,551 yards in his college career and has a huge advantage over the rest of UNTs quarterbacks in terms of experience. 10. UNTs players report for the beginning of fall camp tomorrow with practice and media day to follow on Monday. We have been talking about how UNTs roster shapes up and some of the key issues the Mean Green faces heading into the fall since the end of spring practice. There is a feeling around UNT that this could be the year the Mean Green turns it around, and that maybe its UNTs last good chance to turn it around after eight straight losing seasons. With so many seniors in key spots, its easy to see why. And that does not even take into account the one-time chance to get off on the right foot in Conference USA. Practice will be closed up tighter than a drum again this year, which means we wont see much, OK any, of the Mean Green before the season opener against Idaho. What issues will UNT be working on behind the scenes? Here are some thoughts: Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/08/unt-players-report-tomorrow-thoughts-notes-entering-camp-part-i.html/
  11. As a North Texas fan suffering through a 4-win 2012 season it was pretty easy to lay the blame on #7. Derek Thompson (DT), in his junior year had his struggles throwing as many interceptions as he did touchdown passes (14 TD's-14 INT's). He also made some bad decisions at key points in key game like throwing an ill advised interception at the start of the 4th quarter against Western Kentucky when UNT was winning the game 24-10. Of course WKU came back to win that game and a big upset win on the road to end the season slipped through Dan McCarney's fingers like sand. Since then, UNT fans have seen the dream of future star quarterback recruit Brock Berglund taking the reins fade. Berglund came highly regarded as a three star transfer from Kansas. A pulled hamstring in the beginning of spring training limited his snaps and put him way behind Thompson heading into this season. It's not that Berglund doesn't have the skills - he does - but he has yet to put them all together and a turnover conscious McCartney isn't likely to roll the dice on him, at least early on in the season. Mac needs wins and he despises turnovers. With all the upside athleticism Berglund possesses he is basically a new quarterback to this system - and the FBS game itself. He will make some mistakes on the field as he earns his stripes. read more:
  12. Tulsa was a unanimous pick to win the West Division, while East Carolina was picked to win the East Division. We know that we have our work cut out for us heading into a new league, and we have a lot to prove against some great teams that are in our division and our league, UNT head coach Dan McCarney said in a statement. The last time UNT did not have a player named to a preseason all-conference team was in 2009, when the Mean Green played in the Sun Belt Conference. UNT left that league after last season to join C-USA. McCarney and UNTs players have spoken about the importance of playing well in their first season in a new conference throughout the offseason. They are not going to shut the program down if we dont win, but this is a big year for us, UNT quarterback Derek Thompson said. There are a lot of guys who are ready to help turn things and have a really successful year. We are prepared for it. 13. Conference USA’s quarterback power rankings are topped by two rising juniors who enjoyed prolific seasons a year ago, followed by a quartet of solid seniors. After that, however, the picture is much murkier. Five of C-USA’s 14 teams will turn to a first-year starter in 2013. All of them are talented, yet on the flip side all of them are also vastly inexperienced. 10 Derek Thompson Sr. 57.5%, 2,629 PASS YDS, 14 PASS TD, 14 INT The Mean Green have an underrated offensive line, so Thompson should have ample time to throw in his third year as UNT’s starter. The question is to whom, as an upgrade at receiver is sorely needed. Read more: http://www.lostlettermen.com/ranking-c-usas-starting-quarterbacks/
  14. No. 2 – Can Derek Thompson get it done? I’m sitting in a log cabin out in a state park in East Texas on vacation, pondering the future of UNT football. Ok, not really, but I am taking a couple of minutes to jump back on the blog to continue our off-season questions series. Today, we ponder UNT’s quarterback situation and Derek Thompson. Thompson put up some pretty impressive numbers last season, throwing for 2,649 yards and 14 touchdowns. He threw for 200 yards in seven straight games. Was Thompson perfect? No. No quarterback ever is. Was he pretty good at times? Yeah. Thompson threw for 333 yards against Louisiana-Monroe, 316 against Arkansas State and 282 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette, including hitting Antoinne Jimmerson with a short pass he turned into a 78-yard touchdown catch. The problem was that Thompson also made a few key mistakes, including an interception Jonathan Dowling returned for a touchdown that turned the tide in a season-ending 25-loss to Western Kentucky. 15. We seem to have been transported back to the days of winter ball (Darrell Dickey used to have spring practice in February, hence the term Winter Ball, back in the day). But as always, there were a few interesting tidbits to go along with some frozen toes today. UNT’s defense pretty much dominated a scrimmage at the end of practice until UNT went into red zone and hurry-up drills. Derek Thompson hit Darnell Smith for touchdown passes that covered 15 and 19 yards, threw another 3-yard touchdown pass and ran another in from 3 yards out. Thompson knocked Marcus Trice out in the process on the run. Trice was down for a few minutes before getting up. Thompson also threw what should have been an interception. Zac Whitfield just flat dropped one. Whitfield is a good corner. UNT has to sit there and wonder just how much better he would be if he could catch the ball more consistently. 16. funny twitter parody account of DT. check it out for a good chuckle. https://twitter.com/Derek_Thompson7 my favorite tweet: "My fave part about spring ball is even if I thro a pick my teammate makes a play. Making the team better. Thats what Im about. Both sides."
