  1. This is the kind of hor$hit WB and the AD Dept has to deal with in regards to the Denton Record Chronicle. Our softball team and it’s new coach Rodney DeLong traveled last Friday to College Station and kicked ass. They went 4-1 overall in the Aggie Classic that included a run-rule curb stomping Saturday of the host and 20th ranked A&M team 10-2, our first win over a ranked team in three seasons. We won 9-0 over UNC and won 8-7 in an extra inning marathon (12) over Cal Baptist Friday evening. We then run ruled A&M Saturday afternoon then lost by 1 in extra innings (9) Saturday evening to Cal Baptist. Then we run ruled Northern Colorado 8-2 Sunday morning. So what do the morons at the DRC put accross the top of the sports page this morning? They print a headline teaser across the top of the sports page that UNT Softball “lose in tourneys”. No DUMBASSES!!! North Texas WINS in tourneys! North Texas outscored their opponents 40-17. North Texas won Sunday’s game and went 4-1 in the tournament and kicked the crap out of the ranked team. And yeah, I know it’s the printed version and not online. Despite what you may think or say a lot of potential donors/season ticket holders/supporters of NT Athletics still read the print paper.....but that’s completely beside the point here. It’s the mindset and the negative attitude this paper has always had and always will as long as the Patterson (Ok State Alumni) family runs it. North Texas spends a lot of money advertising in that POS rag. North Texas is Denton’s largest employer. You’d think the days of the constant little negative jabs and back stabbing would be over? It’s not. Effing pisses me off man!!! Rick
  2. The Denton Record-Chronicle has been honored for producing one of the best sports special sections for newspapers of its size nationally in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest for work produced in 2017. http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/mean-green/2018/04/16/denton-record-chronicle-vito-gamel-honored-apse http://www.dentonrc.com/news/denton/2018/04/15/record-chronicle-earns-16-awards-2017-coverage Congrats to Brett and the DRC!

  4. "Mean Green vs. Golden Arches" is about a developing land dispute between McDonald's and the University of North Texas. It seems both of them want to own a 1-acre parcel of land at the intersection of North Texas Boulevard and the Interstate 35E service road. The story provides a classic case for why UNT needs a regent who lives in Denton. More on that later in this editorial. Old-timers will remember when an Exxon station, a McDonald's and an IHOP were all crowded next to one another. The project to widen the interstate came along and the Texas Department of Transportation aquired a chunk of the property. The Exxon and the McDonald's shut down and were razed. The IHOP is still operating. UNT owns the surrounding property and wants the parcel in question for an as-yet undisclosed building project. McDonald's, with support from IHOP, is working on a deal to rebuild its restaurant at that location. UNT is an arm of the state of Texas. As such, it wields the power of eminent domain, meaning it can force condemnation of the IHOP/McDonald's property if the parties cannot reach a negotiated sale. This newspaper does not like to see UNT throwing its weight around in a way that some observers might see as bullying. With that said, we believe it's important for the university to present a visually striking gateway to its campus that can be seen from the highway. read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/opinion/editorial/2017/08/27/unts-land-plan-needs-local-input
  5. The University of North Texas can now move forward with purchasing the Sack N Save building at 1500 Interstate 35E. The UNT Board of Regents voted unanimously for the chancellor or a designee to move forward with buying the property for $6.25 million. The property was valued $2,155,200 by the Denton Central Appraisal District last year. In September, the board authorized the chancellor or a designee to work on an agreement to buy the property, and use eminent domain if a deal could not be reached. 6. Texas Woman’s University confirmed it did not make the same financial errors the University of North Texas did, in an audit of state-funded benefits released Monday. After state officials learned UNT had systemically used state money to pay for employee benefits and salaries it shouldn’t have, totaling $83.5 million over 10 years, Gov. Rick Perry ordered all other public universities to check to see if they were making the same mistakes. The audit at TWU did catch some mistakes, though, an error in its payroll software caused the university to withdraw $10,480 it shouldn’t have. After the audit was completed, the software glitch was fixed, said Brenda Floyd, vice president of finance and administration. read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/local-news/local-news-headlines/20141117-audit-twu-didnt-repeat-unts-mistakes.ece
  7. Tradition. I love this word. Even the sound of it is solid. One of Broadway’s most famous musicals is also one of my favorites, Fiddler on the Roof. It is the story of people in a time of upheaval. Tevye is the main character, through whom we experience the drama. Change is rocking his world, and he would be completely undone were it not for tradition. “Because of our traditions, we’ve kept our balance for many, many years,” he says. Tradition is a binding force that holds together. It works even when we who keep it have forgotten why. Cumulatively, we have thousands of them, some shared, others personal. Some are weighty with meaning, and many we keep for the sheer joy of doing so. Football and holidays are two in the latter category that immediately come to mind. I am a University of North Texas alumna. Over the years I’ve heard murmurs, even among fellow students and alumni, that unlike other universities, UNT lacks tradition. Not so! UNT’s culture is steeped in original, independent tradition. It may not always be obvious, because it looks a little different from every angle and on every individual. But that is the manifestation of original, is it not? And the fact that thousands have pursued their passions their own way in the campus’s classrooms and corridors over the years is the tradition for which UNT is perhaps most known. But there are many others. This week is Mean Green’s 2014-themed “Greatest Homecoming on Earth.” Many traditions combine under the homecoming banner: homecoming court, bonfire, parade, Yell Like Hell pep rally, Spirit March, tailgating, all crowned by the game itself. I wondered if these traditions were really ours. So I did a bit of digging to see if Denton stories were behind these traditions or we decided somewhere down the line to mimic those of others. 8. Enrollment at the University of North Texas stayed consistent this fall, with 36,216 students in classes — down just five students from fall 2013 numbers. There are high and low points of the data breakdown, though, with retention up but freshman enrollment down. Last academic year, the university implemented required academic advising sessions for freshmen, UNT President Neal Smatresk said during a speech to the university community Wednesday. Overall, enrollment for continuing students increased 1.3 percent since the fall, and retention of students after their first year at UNT increased by 2.5 percent. 9. Tomorrow is a big day for us here at the Denton Record-Chronicle. Our annual football magazine will be in the paper and on the newsstands. It’s a project that takes months to put together and pretty much puts life on hold for our staff for the final two-week push to get the 120-page monster done. In our humble opinion, it’s the best publication we put out all year and one of the best of its kind in the nation. We have evidence to support that claim. The Record-Chronicle has earned six straight top 10 honors in the Associated Press Sports Editors special section category for newspapers of our size. 10. One of the ideas behind North Texas’ efforts to bring its top recruiting targets to Denton in June for a series of events was so that they could become familiar with the school, its coaches and current players long before national signing day. The side benefit was that some of those high school seniors got to know each other as well. The payoff came late Monday when Marshall offensive lineman Chett Munden committed to play for the Mean Green. Munden struck up a friendship with Converse Judson guard Abdul Beecham during his first visit to UNT and decided that playing next to him in college would be a perfect scenario. 11. Let me introduce myself. I am the new managing editor of the Denton Record-Chronicle. Its a happy homecoming. Visitors might look at Denton and see a rather unremarkable Texas town blown sideways by prairie winds and in need of a fresh coat of paint. But Denton is my hometown. I have loved it all my life. My lineage here dates back to the 1890s when my great-grandparents left northeast Texas to teach school in Denton County. They settled on a farm south of town. A cousin still lives on the property. Many of our relatives are buried at Roselawn Memorial Park. Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/local-news/local-news-headlines/20140705-scott-k.-parks-ties-to-denton-and-daily-paper-run-deep.ece
  12. The Denton Record-Chronicle received three first-place awards and one second-place award in the Texas Press Association’s 2014 Texas Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were announced during a luncheon Saturday in Corpus Christi. A special section devoted to the University of North Texas football team’s appearance in the Heart of Dallas Bowl received a first-place award in the daily newspaper division. Judges commented that the section was well-designed, packed with information and photos and very accessible to the reader. The Record-Chronicle’s annual football preview section, Football 2013, also took home a first-place award. 13. Prominent sports figures in the Dallas-Fort Worth area offered their condolences to Richard Durrett’s family one by one late Tuesday as word of the well-known media figure’s death quickly spread. TCU football coach Gary Patterson, Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki and Rangers broadcaster Eric Nadel all posted messages on Twitter, while Rangers manager Ron Washington simply called Durrett “a Texas Ranger” in an interview on MLB Network. The news of Durrett’s sudden death at the age of 38 from undetermined causes was deeply felt in Denton, where the TCU graduate’s rise in the media business began. Durrett began his career working for Denton Publishing Co., the parent company of the Denton Record-Chronicle. Durrett first worked at the Grapevine Sun in 1999 before moving on that year to the DRC, where he was the sports editor. 15. We have a special guest with us today in Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald. Mark covers Georgia. You can find his stories that appear in the paper at the newspaper’s website, where you can also find links to his blog and Twitter feed. Mark agreed to stop by and answer a few questions about Saturday’s game: 1. How does Georgia approach this game? Given that Georgia just had a week off, I think they go out there Saturday wanting to be crisp on offense and show improvement on defense. Any hangover from the South Carolina win is probably gone by now and the team wants to build momentum for a top-10 LSU team next week. 16. ATHENS, Ohio — North Texas followed up one of its finest offensive performances in recent years last week with a tough night in a loss to Ohio. UNT struggled early in Saturday’s game to cash in on key opportunities and couldn’t quite finish a comeback in a 27-21 loss to the Bobcats. UNT turned the ball over four times and finished with 299 yards just one week after rolling up 591 yards in a 40-6 win over Idaho. Ohio linebacker Javon Johnson intercepted a pass from UNT quarterback Derek Thompson and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. That was just one of a few mistakes that came back to haunt UNT. “We made some critical errors and big mistakes and a couple of turnovers,” UNT head coach Dan McCarney said. “The interception for a touchdown, if we get a little more air under it we might have had a touchdown. It was a 14-point swing. A little better throw, it could have been a touchdown.” Thompson finished with 195 yards and two touchdowns on a night UNT struggled to run the ball, finishing with 104 yards on 38 carries. Ohio limited Brelan Chancellor to one reception for 33 yards just one week after he finished with six catches for 135 yards against Idaho. 17. North Texas knows exactly what it has heading into the season with Brelan Chancellor. The senior is about as proven as a player can be at the college level after three seasons of highlight-reel catches and consistent production that has put him at the top of the scouting report for all of the Mean Green’s opponents. The concern for UNT heading into its Aug. 31 season opener against Idaho isn’t Chancellor — it’s the wide receivers the Mean Green is depending on to complement him. What wide receivers coach Mike Grant has seen during a little more than a week in fall practice has him and his players feeling better about the situation. Darnell Smith, who essentially fell into UNT’s lap last season after walking on following two years at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa, has emerged as a leader and likely starter. The return of Carlos Harris and the addition of transfers Darius Terrell and Carl Caldwell will provide UNT depth, while freshmen Darvin Kidsy and Turner Smiley are players whom UNT plans to develop. “We are going to be a strong group,” Grant said. “Brelan is the center of it, but we have some guys who are coming on.” Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20130813-football-unt-working-to-take-heat-off-chancellor.ece
