  1. With Dajon -- the situation is a bit muddier. A lot of people are trying to throw out theories about why Dajon is gone now. And did he get dismissed from the team or did he leave? I'm not going to share what I've heard, but I think it's safe to say Dajon was always going to be a story of 'What If'? What if he didn't have to be concerned with taking care and raising his young daughter? What if he could have spent more time committed to Quarterback 101? What if he and the coaches got along a bit better? What if he didn't have four turnovers against UAB? During spring practice Dajon lost the starting job (Did he ever have it coming out of the regular season?) to senior Andrew McNulty, and even dropped behind Josh Greer. And with DaMarcus Smith becoming eligible for summer workouts it only means more competition on a team that has about 17 quarterbacks on the roster. Yes -- Dajon had a great game against a terribly equipped Nicholls defense that had three different head coaches in the span of six days leading up to gameday. But, he also had a so-so game against Indiana and a really poor one at UAB that led to him getting the hook. Read more: http://epicnemec.blogspot.com/2015/06/is-something-wrong-in-denton.html
  2. Pretty interesting decision for Mac and Canales to make here. Let's see what the fans think.
  3. North Texas is right back where it has spent a whole lot of time since the end of its breakout season of a year ago. The Mean Green are once again evaluating their options at quarterback, this time in the days leading up to a game against Southern Miss on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. UNT went through that process in spring practice and fall drills before settling on Josh Greer as its starter. The Mean Green switched to Dajon Williams and found some success before a flurry of key turnovers in a blowout loss to UAB on Saturday has once again put UNT back where it started. This time around Williams and career backup Andrew McNulty will compete for the starting job at a time UNT is looking to rebound from a 2-4 start. Whoever starts will get the next crack at replacing Heart of Dallas Bowl MVP Derek Thompson and bringing the Mean Green out of a two-game slide to open Conference USA play. 4. First things first: 1) I am trying to burn board time during an off week. 2) I know this is way to early to be statistically significant, see #1. If you look at all QB's with at least 20 completions, Dajon Williams is #1 in Pass Efficiency Rating (formula is (8.4 * Yds + 330 * TD - 200 * Int + 100 * Cmp) / Att)) Top 6 PER --- Name PER Y/A TD -INT D. Williams 216.8 12.2 3-0 S. Hall 133.0 7.6 50-25 J. Case 129.6 7.4 12-8 D. Thompson 126.1 7.0 42-34 R. Dodge 125.7 6.6 20-20 S. Ramsey 116.2 7.0 69-67 Since I am solidly in the tap the breaks camp, I probably should post this. But what fun would that be?
  5. UNT didn’t have a conventional press conference today, but did make a host of players available this afternoon. The video at the top of this blog is of quarterback Dajon Williams and Darvin Kidsy discussing UNT’s win 77-3 win over Nicholls State on Saturday. There were a couple of key news items that came down both before and after players stopped by to talk. – First off, Kidsy was named Conference USA’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in UNT’s win over Nicholls. Kidsy returned three punts for 132 yards and had a 75-yard return for a touchdown. It was the fourth-longest punt return for a touchdown so far this year in major college football and the sixth-longest punt return in UNT history. 6. Freshman Dajon Williams made his first start at quarterback and could not have had an easier debut, completing 11-of-14 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns and rushing four times for 68 yards and two touchdowns. The Mean Green averaged 11.9 yards per pass attempt and 8.5 yards per rush, and also notched two pick sixes and one punt return for a touchdown. Ironically, the Conference USA single-game points record North Texas tied was set against… North Texas. Rice set the record back in 2008 by demolishing then-Sun Belt member North Texas 77-20. read more: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/09/21/old-dominion-north-texas-made-conference-usa-history-on-saturday/
  7. Dan McCarney is your classic Big 10 guy. He preaches smashmouth football, clock control, and teams that are led by defense. His first year at North Texas featured an offense led by 1000-yard rusher Lance Dunbar (now a Dallas Cowboy). His second year at North Texas featured a stable of young running backs, and a stout defense. Brandin Byrd anchored is third year with another 1,000 yard performance. The defense is and was always anchored by a middle linebacker- in 2011, 2012, and 2013 it was Zach Orr (now a member of the Baltimore Ravens) who was the heart and soul of the defense. In 2014, it is Derek Akune. At Iowa State he did much of the same- run, run, run, control the clock, and play good defense. He had one or two 1,000 yard rushers during his tenure, but his defenses had the unfortunate task of going up against Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Missouri, rather than UAB, Rice, UTSA, and Marshall (no knock on any of those programs). 8. Here are five quick thoughts following UNT’s win over Nicholls State on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. 1. UNT has found its quarterback There were a whole lot of question about Dajon Williams and if he is ready to become the Mean Green’s starting quarterback heading into the weekend. Williams has started just one game, but appears more than ready. Williams accounted for five touchdowns against Nicholls and will only improve from this point forward. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/five-quick-thoughts-following-unts-win-over-nicholls-state.html/
  9. Dajon Williams spent a whole lot of time positioned directly behind North Texas’ huddle in practice over the past few months. Injuries and off-the-field issues kept the redshirt freshman out of the lineup and without a whole lot to do. UNT offensive coordinator Mike Canales made sure that time didn’t go to waste. “He did a lot mentally,” Canales said. “I had him mimic everything behind the huddle on every play so that he could get the mental reps and try to get some experience. I got him in with the ones and twos [first- and second-teams] when I could.” The time Williams spent running through UNT’s offense without actually running it suddenly looms large for the Mean Green, who will turn to the former Pflugerville Connally standout in the hope that he can spark a stagnant offense and revive optimism in a season that is dangerously close to slipping away. UNT started the season with junior college transfer Josh Greer as its quarterback and gave career backup Andrew McNulty a shot as well. Nothing has worked as UNT hoped it might, leaving the Mean Green facing a harsh reality heading into their game against Nicholls State on Saturday with a 1-2 record and a loss to Louisiana Tech in their Conference USA opener already in the books. 10. UNT made a key move today — both in terms of its immediate future and its long-term plans. Dajon Williams is in at quarterback for the Mean Green. The story of how UNT got here in terms of the last couple of months is one we went into a little on the blog today. UNT head coach Dan McCarney pulled the curtain back a bit and talked about Williams’ issues off the field over the last few months — not coming into camp ready to go, missing both major fall scrimmages and the fact he is now a father. We hinted at some of those issues on the blog for the last several months, saying that Williams wasn’t ready and wasn’t in the race. I’m not going to second guess McCarney or offensive coordinator Mike Canales on this one. UNT followed what seems like a reasonable course of action. 11. The two big issues of the day following UNT’s 42-21 loss to Louisiana Tech last night at Apogee Stadium are UNT’s quarterback problems and attendance issues. Here are a couple of quick thoughts on each: UNT has to look at other options at quarterback: We will get into this in the paper tomorrow, but UNT has to take a long hard look at what its options are at quarterback. Josh Greer has started the first three games of the year and struggled. UNT ranked No. 123 out of 124 teams nationally heading into last night’s game in passing offense with an average of 61.5 yards a game. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/a-couple-of-quick-hit-opinions-on-qbs-attendance.html/
  12. One fact I didnt mention last night is that defensive end Daryl Mason missed the game with an injury he suffered in practice leading up to the game. Mason should be back for the SMU game, which should help matters. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/08/time-for-some-sunday-leftovers-and-thoughts.html/

  14. There is nothing better when it comes to sports discussions than a list. A pretty interesting one came out today — NFL.com’s list of all 128 teams in major college football in order of the strength of their quarterback situation. My thoughts on where UNT stands are pretty well known. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/interesting-ranking-of-schools-qb-situations-heading-into-season.html/
  15. Andrew McNulty throws a pass during North Texas' spring game at Apogee Stadium. McNulty will compete with Josh Greer and Dajon Williams for the starting job in fall practice. It seems like we have been here before when it comes to UNT football. Lets turn the clock back a little. - See more at: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/summer-football-questions-series-part-ii-how-does-unts-qb-situation-shake-out.html/#sthash.YCOm4JuN.dpuf
  16. I know everyone, including Dajon was disappointed he was injured and could not play in the scrimmage on Saturday. I thought it was neat to see him cheering on and congratulating his teammates from the sidelines. Get well soon Dajon!
  17. 1). As talented as QB Dajon Williams athletically, is he just not yet ready for prime time. First off -- he's just a redshirt freshman... so after his medical redshirt he will have 4 more years to play. I think sometimes we forget that, and his performance in the Idaho home opener game last season probably didn't help in terms of our expectations. Much like the Fall of 2013, Williams took UNT's first couple of weeks in Spring training by storm. He made great plays, plays that the other guys couldn't make. When it's just football, Williams excels. When it comes to the system and understanding a fairly complex Chico Canales offense, Williams can no longer just react using his instincts and athleticism to make plays. This leads to improvising which can lead to turnovers which we all know Mac utterly despises. read more:
  18. Given where things stand at the middle point who will be given the QB start against the Horns?
