  1. North Texas opens its football season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Texas. Here’s a quick scouting report of the Longhorns: 2013 record: 8-5 Key number: 0 — The number of times North Texas has beaten Texas in nine meetings. 1. A new era: Texas will have a new coach on the sideline for the first time since in 1998 in Charlie Strong. The former Louisville coach takes over for Mack Brown, who led the Longhorns to some lopsided wins over the Mean Green later in his career at Texas. The Longhorns beat UNT 65-0 in 2004 and 56-7 in 2006. Strong and his defensive coordinator Vance Bedford worked with McCarney at Florida. 2. Tomorrow is a big day for us here at the Denton Record-Chronicle. Our annual football magazine will be in the paper and on the newsstands. It’s a project that takes months to put together and pretty much puts life on hold for our staff for the final two-week push to get the 120-page monster done. In our humble opinion, it’s the best publication we put out all year and one of the best of its kind in the nation. We have evidence to support that claim. The Record-Chronicle has earned six straight top 10 honors in the Associated Press Sports Editors special section category for newspapers of our size. 3. UNT released its depth chart this week in advance of its season-opener at Texas. The big news of the day was that Josh Greer won the starting quarterback job, which we posted some thoughts about yesterday. There was a whole lot more of interest to get to as far as the depth chart goes, so lets get to it with a few moves that stand out Shawn McKinney ended up winning the fifth starting spot on the offensive line. We hinted at this late in fall practice, but Shawn Snacks McKinney (love that nickname) edged out Ryan Rentfo for the fifth starting line spot. That means that Cyril Lemon will move to right tackle. Dan McCarney and Mike Simmonds are all about getting their five best guys on the field. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/08/looking-at-unts-depth-chart.html/
  4. DENTON – North Texas is in unfamiliar territory heading into the fourth season of Dan McCarney’s tenure with the Mean Green. UNT spent the first two years of McCarney’s time in Denton trying to break out of a funk that had seen the Mean Green fail to post a winning season since 2004. A breakout 9-4 campaign that included a win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl has UNT aiming to maintain its momentum instead of trying to get its program on track. UNT has some key pieces in place among nine returning starters, including five on the offensive side of the ball, but must replace starting quarterback Derek Thompson and several other key players. How a few inexperienced backups and newcomers fill the voids left by those starters will go a long way toward determining if UNT can post a second straight winning season under McCarney, who is 74-104 in 15 seasons at UNT and Iowa State. 5. I posted a low resolution copy of the UNT helmet the Associated Press moved the other day and noted that there is a good chance that the Mean Green would wear that design this season. It was one of the more popular blog posts of the last few days, which A. makes me sad and B. prompted me to ask for some additional information on this important topic. 6. And in other news, I might have picked up a bit of a hint on what UNT might wear this year in terms of its uniforms. First a disclaimer — There is nothing that beats me down more than pageantry/band talk, which is why you don’t read about it here, but uniform talk runs a close second. What sets uniform talk apart is that uniforms actually matter to players, who care about what they wear. That in turn matters when it comes to landing players who can make a difference on Saturday. 7. There are a few traditions like no others when it comes to UNT football the cannon and Scrappy the mascot come to mind. Of course there is also our own little tradition here on the blog. Yep, its time for the Get Your Rear on the Record contest. We usually trot this out there about two weeks before the start of the season. Here are the ground rules: Each year we take guesses via e-mail: bvito@dentonrc.com on what UNTs final record will be. We keep a running tally on the blog and then dig them up to see who made the right call at the end of the year. The exercise was born out of the annoying process of watching people predict that each year would be the big turnaround year for UNT for reasons based on faith and little else. No one would remember at the end of the year or point out who was right and who was wrong when it came to preseason predictions. The MGB never forgets. You might be wondering how last years contest turned out. Well, I have the answer. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/08/its-time-for-a-unt-tradition-get-your-rear-on-the-record.html/
  8. DENTON — Dan McCarney was in the midst of a rousing summertime speech in front of a room full of pumped-up boosters when North Texas’ head coach acknowledged that even he didn’t know how tough the task of resurrecting a lifeless program would be. UNT had gone six seasons without winning more than three games in a year when McCarney arrived at UNT before the 2011 campaign. After three years and a lot of hard work, McCarney and the Mean Green finally broke through with a slump-busting 9-4 season that concluded with a win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That win changed the face of the program and left the Mean Green facing a new challenge this fall — proving last season was beginning of the program’s rise and not just a fluke. “The challenge ahead is this — are we a real program, which means no matter who you lose or who gets injured or who graduates can the next group come in and replace them?” McCarney wondered. “Or do we just disappear off the college football landscape for another 10 years?” Read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/unt-mean-green/20140807-mean-green-football-preview-unt-will-find-out-if-it-s-a-real-program.ece

  10. UNT will begin fall practice Monday afternoon. Workouts are closed, but there are several key story lines that can be tracked through what the Mean Greens coaches and players have to say. Here are a few issues of interest heading into the opening of a new season. 1. What does UNT's offense look like with so many new players at key spots? UNT will continue the search for a new starting quarterback today when Andrew McNulty and Josh Greer will alternate snaps with the first and second teams. McNulty, a career backup, and Greer, a JUCO transfer, appear to have the best chance to win the starting job. Head coach Dan McCarney has been careful to say that Dajon Williams and Connor Means are not out of the hunt yet, though. 11. And so it begins. UNT’s players are set to report today for the beginning of fall practice tomorrow. A few years ago, in another era of college football — and UNT football — there was always the possibility of a few surprises in terms of who shows up. I don’t expect that to be the case this year. Football is a year-round endeavor now for teams and players. UNT’s guys have been around most of the summer. I will check in just to see, though. Stay tuned. 12. I swung by UNTs Mean Green Club event at Apogee Stadium tonight to see what was said (and to be perfectly honest, grill everyone I could find for information like a cheep steak). Heres a rundown of what went down The event is held every year to honor Mean Green Club reps. The reps raised $266,780 last year. 20 percent of UNTs athletic scholarships are covered by the Mean Green Club. UNT honored a series of reps for their contributions, including: Alan White (District 1), David and Julie Anderson (District 2), Todd Samuels (District 3), David Fast (District 4), Jim Fincher (District 5), Luke Condor (District 6), and Eddy Matchette (District 7). 13. One of the ideas behind North Texas’ efforts to bring its top recruiting targets to Denton in June for a series of events was so that they could become familiar with the school, its coaches and current players long before national signing day. The side benefit was that some of those high school seniors got to know each other as well. The payoff came late Monday when Marshall offensive lineman Chett Munden committed to play for the Mean Green. Munden struck up a friendship with Converse Judson guard Abdul Beecham during his first visit to UNT and decided that playing next to him in college would be a perfect scenario. 14. The on-going saga of who will be on the field when UNT travels to Austin to face Texas took another turn over the weekend that we have to yet to mention here on the blog. We’ll get to that, but first UNT QB target Chris Riddle posted a photo on his Instagram account of both him and a teammate at Central Florida for media day. Riddle is a good prospect and was high on UNT when I talked to him a while back for our on-going UNT recruiting target series. Riddle has visited UCF multiple times. He’ll land somewhere. 15. One of the more important dates on the UNT football calender has arrived. The Mean Green’s Friday Night Lights camp is tongiht. UNT’s football staff travels the state and sees a host of the best players in Texas high school football at its satellite camps. The best of the best are often invited to Denton for the final camp in the series — Friday Night Lights. The concept is pretty common in college football. Schools often have select camps for their top prospects. The format UNT follows is a bit different. Friday Night Lights is open to any high school player who wants to come. Players can register for the event that begins at 5 p.m. before the camp. In the end, UNT ends up with a mix of high school players from the region and several of its top recruiting targets. We ran a preview of the event in today’s paper. read more:http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/friday-night-lights-preview.html/
  16. UNT coach Dan McCarney was a popular guy at Conference USA media day this week. He took a minute or two to shoot a video with me. We talked a little about the upcoming season and where the Mean Green is at as the beginning of two-a-days on Aug. 5 looms. I wrote a story and a notebook for today’s paper on what went down at media day. The big topic of the day was the changing landscape in college athletics and full cost of attendance scholarships. Conference USA will go in that direction, one that will provide players more money to live than they have in the past. That issue ties in with the top five conferences in college football potentially being granted autonomy from the rest of the schools in college athletics. It’s going to happen — likely in a couple of weeks. We covered both topics in today’s main story. Read more and video here: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/mgb-video-mccarney-talks-about-season-at-c-usa-media-day-notes.html/
  17. After banging out a few stories for the tomorrow’s papers, I’m back with some follow-up thoughts from Conference USA media day. I wrote a main story and a notebook for tomorrow’s DRC (buy the newspaper), so there isn’t much I didn’t get in, but here’s one tidbit I omitted. Dan McCarney talked a little about opening against Texas and facing SMU early in the season … “North Texas has never beaten Texas and is 4-28 against SMU [actually, it's 4-28-1, but who's counting?],” McCarney said. “Rivalry? Rivalry at 4-28? We had better establish one where we have a chance and they have a chance. Do the math, there is no rivalry.” read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/c-usa-media-days-wrap-up-thoughts-and-tidbits.html/
  18. UNT was a narrow pick to win Conference USA’s West Division in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll that was released this morning. UNT received 66 points in the poll, just edging out Rice and UTSA, which received 65 and 62 points, respectively. The Mean Green had two players named to the preseason all-conference team in senior guards Cyril Lemon and Mason Y’Barbo. The honors come after a breakout season that saw the Mean Green finish 9-4 and beat UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. 19. There is nothing better when it comes to sports discussions than a list. A pretty interesting one came out today — NFL.com’s list of all 128 teams in major college football in order of the strength of their quarterback situation. My thoughts on where UNT stands are pretty well known. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/interesting-ranking-of-schools-qb-situations-heading-into-season.html/

  21. The Denton Record-Chronicle received three first-place awards and one second-place award in the Texas Press Association’s 2014 Texas Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were announced during a luncheon Saturday in Corpus Christi. A special section devoted to the University of North Texas football team’s appearance in the Heart of Dallas Bowl received a first-place award in the daily newspaper division. Judges commented that the section was well-designed, packed with information and photos and very accessible to the reader. The Record-Chronicle’s annual football preview section, Football 2013, also took home a first-place award. 22. Now that we are back from a little R&R and in the blast furnace of the Texas summer, its time to kick our summer questions series on UNT football back into gear. Its something of an off-season tradition to look at the state of affairs for the UNT football program and pose a few questions about where the Mean Green stands and where its headed the following fall. - See more at: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/summer-football-questions-series-part-v-does-the-loss-of-a-couple-of-key-assistants-hurt.html/#sthash.kFDzbFPf.dpuf
  23. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is out again. I received an advance copy since I wrote for the magazine again this year. Before we get to our overarching question of the day, a few highlights: – UNT came in at No. 9 in the state among the 12 FBS schools in the magazine’s power poll. The Mean Green ranks ahead of SMU, which checked in at No. 11. – Marshall is the consensus pick to win C-USA in the writer’s poll. – Rice was the magazine’s pick to win C-USA’s West Division with UTSA coming in second and UNT third. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/dave-cambells-texas-football-out-lets-talk-expectations.html/
  24. Prominent sports figures in the Dallas-Fort Worth area offered their condolences to Richard Durrett’s family one by one late Tuesday as word of the well-known media figure’s death quickly spread. TCU football coach Gary Patterson, Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki and Rangers broadcaster Eric Nadel all posted messages on Twitter, while Rangers manager Ron Washington simply called Durrett “a Texas Ranger” in an interview on MLB Network. The news of Durrett’s sudden death at the age of 38 from undetermined causes was deeply felt in Denton, where the TCU graduate’s rise in the media business began. Durrett began his career working for Denton Publishing Co., the parent company of the Denton Record-Chronicle. Durrett first worked at the Grapevine Sun in 1999 before moving on that year to the DRC, where he was the sports editor. 25. Andrew McNulty throws a pass during North Texas' spring game at Apogee Stadium. McNulty will compete with Josh Greer and Dajon Williams for the starting job in fall practice. It seems like we have been here before when it comes to UNT football. Lets turn the clock back a little. - See more at: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/summer-football-questions-series-part-ii-how-does-unts-qb-situation-shake-out.html/#sthash.YCOm4JuN.dpuf
