  1. UNT defensive coordiantor John Skladany is retiring at the end of the season, a story we covered on the blog and in the paper today. The question now is the impact his departure will make and where UNT goes from here. As far as the impact of Skladany’s departure goes, it’s huge. UNT’s players talked about the connection they have with him and the impact he has made on the program. The guy is just a good football coach. I got some of what UNT’s players had to say in the paper. They unanimously like and respect Skladany. 2. Here are five quick thoughts following North Texas loss to Rice. 1. UNT is in a really tough spot now UNT was already in a bad position coming into its game against Rice, but is really tough spot now. UNT could point to last season when it rallied from a 2-3 start to get to a bowl game and finish 9-4. UNT will have to win out now just to break even at 6-6. That seems highly unlikely to say the least. 2. Turnovers killed UNT yet again The entire game turned early in the second half when Carlos Harris fumbled a kickoff to set up a Rice field goal and Bryce Callahan intercepted an Andrew McNulty pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. Those two plays erased a 21-14 UNT lead and left the Mean Green in a 24-21 hole. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/10/five-quick-thoughts-3.html/
  3. The assumption when North Texas made the move to Conference USA a couple of years ago was that life would get easier for the Mean Green. That only made sense considering UNT would play more Texas rivals that fans and — more importantly high school players in the state — care about. Throw in a beautiful new venue in Apogee Stadium and an experienced coach like Dan McCarney and it seemed like the pipeline to the treasure trove of talent across the state would finally start to open. Following the events of the last week, and particularly a 30-20 loss to Southern Miss that dropped the Mean Green to 2-5 on the season, one has to wonder why UNT isn’t cashing in like it hoped. UNT knew coming into the season that this would be a rebuilding year to a certain degree. But no one anticipated the way the Mean Green have struggled this year while trying to fill some glaring holes. 4. Here are five quick thoughts after UNT’s 30-20 loss to Southern Miss at Apogee Stadium: 1. The move to McNulty seemed to pay off UNT turned to Andrew McNulty at quarterback, its third starter this season. The move seemed like it came out of desperation to a certain degree after Josh Greer and Dajon Williams didn’t prove to be the right fit for UNT’s offense. McNulty drove the bus effectively. He didn’t make many mistakes, which is what head coach Dan McCarney wants. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/10/five-quick-thoughts-2.html/
  5. Southern Miss at UNT, 6 p.m. Saturday, Apogee Stadium, Denton Records: North Texas 2-4, 0-2 C-USA; Southern Miss 2-4, 0-2 C-USA TV: American Sports Network: Ron Thulin (play-by-play), Keith Moreland (analyst), Evan Nemec (sidelines) Radio: KHYI-FM 95.3, KNTU-FM 88.1, KGAF-AM 1580 On the line: UNT’s chances of playing in a second consecutive bowl game have taken a bit of a hit the last couple of weeks when the Mean Green lost consecutive games at Indiana and UAB. UNT fell to 0-2 in Conference USA play last week with its loss to the Blazers, a set back that was particularly costly. UNT’s hopes of making a run at the C-USA West Division title are dim at best now, especially considering one of its losses came against Louisiana Tech, which appears to be the odds-on favorite after jumping out to a 2-0 start in league play. The Bulldogs have the tiebreaker over UNT in addition to a two-game lead. What the Mean Green are hoping now is that they can make a late run at becoming bowl-eligible with six wins, a goal that is still well within the realm of possibility. UAB is in essentially the same position with a 2-4 overall record and an 0-2 mark in league play. The Golden Eagles have a brutal schedule coming up after their game against UNT with games against C-USA division leaders Louisiana Tech and Marshall coming up with a game at UTEP in between. Saturday’s game could be Southern Miss’ best shot for a win for a while. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/10/prediction-unt-will-right-the-ship-with-win-over-southern-miss.html/
  6. North Texas margin for error has pretty much vanished five games into Dan McCarneys fourth season. UNT lost its Conference USA opener to Louisiana Tech and dropped under the .500 mark last week with a loss to Indiana, a setback that left the Mean Green teetering on the edge of seeing their season spiral downhill heading into a game today at UAB. The good news for the Mean Green is they were in exactly the same spot last year same overall record, same 0-1 conference mark and responded with one of the more memorable runs in program history. UNT won seven of its last eight games and toppled UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. 7. North Texas at UAB, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Legion Field, Birmingham, Ala. Records: North Texas 2-3, 0-1 C-USA; UAB 3-2, 1-1 C-USA TV: TXA 21: Dave Collins (play-by-play), Jim Dorman (analyst) Radio: KHYI-FM 95.3, KNTU-FM 88.1, KGAF-AM 1580 On the line: Both UNT and UAB have one loss in Conference-USA play and can’t afford another, especially this early in the league season, if they expect to contend for a division title. C-USA has not had a team with two losses win a share of a division title since Southern Miss won the East Division outright in 2011 with a 6-2 mark. Both teams could also significantly boost their bowl hopes with a win. UAB hasn’t been to a bowl game since the 2004 Hawaii Bowl, while UNT broke a bowl drought that dated to that same season last year when it knocked off UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Blazers would have a pretty clear path to the magic six-win mark with a win over UNT that would push UAB’s win total to four. The Mean Green’s path would still have some obstacles, but getting to 3-3 would make the climb look a whole lot easier. 8. There was some pretty terrible news to come down over the weekend at UNT. The school has mentioned it, but I thought I would put something up on the blog as well. Tina Jo Reese, the mother of senior Camille Cherry, a setter on the UNT volleyball team, was killed in a freak car accident on her way to the Mean Green’s match on Friday. 9. Here are five quick thoughts following UNT’s 49-24 loss to Indiana: 1. Dajon Williams still has some growing to do The redshirt freshman quarterback sent expectations way of of whack by accounting for five touchdowns in a 77-3 win over Nicholls State. He looked a whole lot more like a redshirt freshman against Indiana, throwing for 205 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. 10. North Texas at Indiana, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Ind. Records: North Texas 2-2, 0-1 Conference USA; Indiana 2-2, 0-1 Big Ten TV: Big Ten Network: Eric Collins (play-by-play), Chuck Long (analyst), Rebecca Haarlow (sideline) Radio: KHYI-FM 95.3, KNTU-FM 88.1, KGAF-AM 1580 On the line: UNT can pick up what would be a notable win in the tenure of head coach Dan McCarney and take a key step toward becoming bowl-eligible by beating Indiana on Saturday. The Hoosiers aren’t exactly the class of the Big Ten, but they are still a Big Ten team. Wins over programs from Power 5 conferences do a world of good for teams from leagues like Conference USA. A win would also put UNT in a terrific spot in terms of getting to a bowl game for a second straight season. The Mean Green can get halfway to six wins with a victory over the Hoosiers. It’s hard to imagine UNT not picking up at least three more wins the rest of the season if it can beat Indiana. While the game is an important opportunity for UNT, it’s even bigger for the Hoosiers. This is Indiana’s fourth season under Wilson and the year the Hoosiers have legitimate hopes to win six games and get to a bowl. Indiana pulled off a big upset of Missouri, but also lost a game to Bowling Green that many had chalked up as a win before the season. Indiana lost to UNT in 2011 in Wilson’s first season at the school and flat can’t lose to the Mean Green again. If the Hoosiers win today and get to 3-2, it’s not that big of a stretch to see another three wins out there. Bouncing back from a 2-3 start to post the first finish of at least .500 fo the first time under Wilson might be a bit of a stretch. 11. UNT didn’t have a conventional press conference today, but did make a host of players available this afternoon. The video at the top of this blog is of quarterback Dajon Williams and Darvin Kidsy discussing UNT’s win 77-3 win over Nicholls State on Saturday. There were a couple of key news items that came down both before and after players stopped by to talk. – First off, Kidsy was named Conference USA’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in UNT’s win over Nicholls. Kidsy returned three punts for 132 yards and had a 75-yard return for a touchdown. It was the fourth-longest punt return for a touchdown so far this year in major college football and the sixth-longest punt return in UNT history. 12. Here are five quick thoughts following UNT’s win over Nicholls State on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. 1. UNT has found its quarterback There were a whole lot of question about Dajon Williams and if he is ready to become the Mean Green’s starting quarterback heading into the weekend. Williams has started just one game, but appears more than ready. Williams accounted for five touchdowns against Nicholls and will only improve from this point forward. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/five-quick-thoughts-following-unts-win-over-nicholls-state.html/
  13. On the line: North Texas has finally gotten to the point as an athletic program where it is following the plan of buying in an opponent for what amounts to a sure win on an annual basis. UNT brought in Texas Southern in 2012 and paid $410,000 to buy in Idaho last year. That move paid off when UNT won its season opener over the Vandals and built some confidence that paid off in a nine-win season. UNT will bring in Nicholls State this week in another well-timed game. 14. Dajon Williams spent a whole lot of time positioned directly behind North Texas’ huddle in practice over the past few months. Injuries and off-the-field issues kept the redshirt freshman out of the lineup and without a whole lot to do. UNT offensive coordinator Mike Canales made sure that time didn’t go to waste. “He did a lot mentally,” Canales said. “I had him mimic everything behind the huddle on every play so that he could get the mental reps and try to get some experience. I got him in with the ones and twos [first- and second-teams] when I could.” The time Williams spent running through UNT’s offense without actually running it suddenly looms large for the Mean Green, who will turn to the former Pflugerville Connally standout in the hope that he can spark a stagnant offense and revive optimism in a season that is dangerously close to slipping away. UNT started the season with junior college transfer Josh Greer as its quarterback and gave career backup Andrew McNulty a shot as well. Nothing has worked as UNT hoped it might, leaving the Mean Green facing a harsh reality heading into their game against Nicholls State on Saturday with a 1-2 record and a loss to Louisiana Tech in their Conference USA opener already in the books. 15. UNT made a key move today — both in terms of its immediate future and its long-term plans. Dajon Williams is in at quarterback for the Mean Green. The story of how UNT got here in terms of the last couple of months is one we went into a little on the blog today. UNT head coach Dan McCarney pulled the curtain back a bit and talked about Williams’ issues off the field over the last few months — not coming into camp ready to go, missing both major fall scrimmages and the fact he is now a father. We hinted at some of those issues on the blog for the last several months, saying that Williams wasn’t ready and wasn’t in the race. I’m not going to second guess McCarney or offensive coordinator Mike Canales on this one. UNT followed what seems like a reasonable course of action. 16. A long day of kicking was coming to a close for Trevor Moore in the summer of 2013 when longtime mentor Jamie Kohl asked him to come through one final time. Moore had encountered pressure situations in games. It comes with the territory for a kicker, but this was different. Moore was on the turf at Apogee Stadium with the prying eyes of a big chunk of the North Texas coaching staff looking on. Coach Dan McCarney was there. So were special teams coordinator Tommy Perry and offensive coordinator Mike Canales, lined up to see the final round of competition at kicking camp and Moore, the player they all had their eye on. 17. UNT is off today, but there is always news on the football front. To start with, it looks like backup safety John Schilleci will be back for the Mean Green’s game this week against Nicholls State after some off the field issues resulted in a one-game suspension. There are a bunch of Conference USA teams in action today. Long story short — the league continue to looks pretty good. 18. The two big issues of the day following UNT’s 42-21 loss to Louisiana Tech last night at Apogee Stadium are UNT’s quarterback problems and attendance issues. Here are a couple of quick thoughts on each: UNT has to look at other options at quarterback: We will get into this in the paper tomorrow, but UNT has to take a long hard look at what its options are at quarterback. Josh Greer has started the first three games of the year and struggled. UNT ranked No. 123 out of 124 teams nationally heading into last night’s game in passing offense with an average of 61.5 yards a game. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/a-couple-of-quick-hit-opinions-on-qbs-attendance.html/
  19. UNT backup safety John Schilleci was arrested on a charge of evading arrest over the weekend and was released on $500 bail. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/breaking-news-unt-player-arrested-over-weekend.html/
  20. I posted five quick (and I do mean quick) thoughts before running down to the field following UNT’s 43-6 win over SMU today at Fouts Field. Now that I’ve filed my stories for both papers, I’m back with some more detailed thoughts and notes. Quite honestly, I pretty shocked with the way it went. I picked UNT to win, but I thought it was a game that could go either way and would be decided in the last couple of minutes. I never thought that UNT would blow out SMU like that. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/follow-up-notes-quotes-thoughts.html/
  21. We are lucky today to welcome in Adam Grosbard of Pony Pride to talk about Saturday’s UNT-SMU game. One can check out Adam’s coverage of SMU at his website. Here’s what he had to say about tomorrow’s game: What does SMU’s quarterback situation look like heading into this weekend’s game? There is as little clarity surrounding SMU’s quarterback situation going into this game as there was last week. Neal Burcham will still start but June Jones has already said that Matt Davis will get chances as well. Jones’s general pattern last week was switching the quarterbacks every two series but occasionally switched in the middle of series. While neither Burcham nor Davis said the handling of the situation is affecting their confidence, but I find it hard to believe that it is not taking its toll. Neither quarterback looked great out there against Baylor but a lot of that had to do with the performance of SMU’s offensive line. It seemed like as soon as an SMU quarterback received the snap he was faced with two-to-three Baylor pass rushers. If the offensive line cannot do a better job against UNT then there will be no improvement in SMU’s offense this week. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/qa-with-adam-grosbard-of-pony-pride.html/
  22. Here is the video I shot with quarterback Josh Greer and cornerback James Jones. We talk a little about UNT’s loss to Texas and Saturday’s game against SMU. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/09/unt-smu-preview-video-with-josh-greer-james-jones.html/
  23. 1. UNT is going to miss Derek Thompson There was a school of thought out there that UNT would not miss Heart of Dallas Bowl MVP Derek Thompson, a three-year starter at quarterback. UNT played both Josh Greer and Andrew McNulty and didn’t have any success with either player. Greer started 1-for-7 with two interceptions. McNulty’s first pass was also picked off. 24. TV: Longhorn Network; Kevin Dunn (play-by-play), Ahmad Brooks (analyst), Sean Adams (sideline) Radio: KHYI-FM 95.3, KNTU-FM 88.1, KGAF-AM 1580; Sirius 117 On the line: North Texas will have a chance to shock the world when it heads down to Austin to take on the Longhorns in the season-opener for both teams. UNT has faced Texas nine times in the series and never won a game. A win over the Longhorns would rank as the most important victory in school history and give the Mean Green even more momentum following last season’s 9-4 finish that included a win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Texas is looking to get off to a good start under new head coach Charlie Strong. The former Louisville coach is working to establish a new culture within the program and has already dismissed more than a half dozen players. A win would give Texas something new to focus on and will be looked at as an early sign Strong has the Longhorns headed in the right direction. A loss would be a disastrous blow for Texas.
