  1. It’s Sunday night. That means it’s time for a few notes. If you followed along on the blog and in the paper on national signing day, you know that UNT is sitting on an open scholarship. UNT is waiting to see if anyone qualifies late or if an interesting transfer prospect pops up. Well, how about this guy? read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/02/sunday-night-notes-ohio-state-transfer-on-the-market.html/
  2. Jordan Richmond, a former Denton Ryan standout who began his career at Texas A&M, is now on UNT’s roster. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/02/former-ryan-standout-on-unt-roster.html/
  3. UNT is down to its last official visit weekend of the recruiting season. We know quite a bit about where the Mean Green stands. With that being said, there are a few key questions to consider heading into signing day. Does Longview Pine Tree QB/ATH Caleb Chumley end up in UNTs class? We reported that Chumley, a big-time prospect, would sign with UNT a couple of days ago. Then we found out we may have jumped the gun. Derrick Hennigan, the interim head coach at Pine Tree, reiterated today that Chumley will sign with UNT, which would be a change in course from what looked like it would happen a few days ago. 4. Mike Canales is staying at UNT. The Mean Greens offensive coordinator, who led UNT to one of its best seasons offensively in program history, Tweeted this morning that he will be back with the Mean Green next year. He later confirmed that he will not be leaving the program to become the head coach at Sam Houston State. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/canales-staying-at-unt.html/
  5. UNT will host a group of key recruits this weekend as we count down the days toward national signing day. First off, let’s talk about UNT’s scholarship situation. The number of spots UNT has left has been a bit of a moving target with players committing and decommitting. With Garrett Davis backing out to sign with Houston and defensive lineman T.J. Tauaalo committing, UNT now has two spots left. I was under the impression that UNT was down to one. Like I said, moving target. UNT will host the following players this weekend: Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/where-unt-stands-heading-into-the-weekend-recruiting-wise.html/
  6. Keller Central defensive tackle T.J. Tauaalo committed to UNT today. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/unt-picks-up-commitment-from-dt.html/
  7. We wrote a little earlier on the blog about UNT landing Tillman Johnson, who backed out of a commitment to Texas State to go with UNT. Well, now UNT has officially lost one as well. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/win-one-lose-one-for-unt-davis-official-to-houston.html/
  8. After making a few phone calls this afternoon, here is where UNT stands as we head down the stretch in football recruiting. I swapped messages with top defensive end target Xavier Washington. The Cedar Hill standout had a good time at Houston, but UNT is still very much in the hunt and will receive an official visit next weekend. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/sunday-night-recruiting-update-2.html/
  9. UNT offensive coordinator/associate head coach Mike Canales will interview to become the new head coach at Sam Houston State on Tuesday, a source close to the situation said Sunday night. Sam Houston previously announced that K. C. Keeler, Mel Tjeersdma, Scott Wachenheim and Darrell Wyatt would interview for the position. At that time, the school said that it could elect to interview another candidate. That candidate is Canales. 11. “We are really excited about the upcoming season,” Benford said. “I feel like the nonconference schedule we have prepared will have us ready for a demanding Conference USA season. Playing in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic will pit us against four tough teams starting with Oklahoma, and we will also make trips to BYU and Texas A&M. Looking around our league, our schedule is comparable to most of the teams in C-USA, and we feel it’s a schedule that our fans will really enjoy.” Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/sports-headlines/20130912-mens-basketball-unt-finalizes-2013-14-schedule.ece
  12. UNT has spent a little time celebrating its win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That can mean only one thing — It’s time to turn the attention to the off-season. Over the next few weeks, we will do the same here on the blog and go over a few of the questions that UNT is facing. Today, we begin with No. 1 — Who will replace Derek Thompson at quarterback? My feelings on Thompson and his contributions are pretty well known. Thompson wasn’t an all-conference player. He had some off games, but he also came up big plenty of times for UNT throughout his career and especially in his senior season. Thompson threw for 256 yards in UNT’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl and finished with 2,896 yards as a senior. He completed 64.4 percent of his passes and threw 16 touchdown passes. 13. The fallout from UNT’s breakout football season continued today when the USA Today Coaches Poll came out. UNT received two votes in the poll. It’s been a long time since UNT received votes. I’m not exactly sure what year it was, but the Mean Green received a vote in either the preseason or postseason poll back in the bowl run of the early- to mid-2000s. In an interesting twist, Louisiana-Lafayette also received a vote. We went over this a while back, but ULL and UNT rank first and second, respectively, for the longest AP Top 25 poll drought nationally. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/tuesday-afternoon-notes-unt-receives-top-25-votes.html/
  14. UNT fans will be talking about the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl for years. The win — and the Mean Green’s breakout season in general — changed the course of the program. We will share our thoughts on how over the next few weeks/months. Before we do, we ought to stop to consider the legacy of UNT’s senior class. We wrote about it quite a bit in the days leading up to the Heart of Dallas Bowl and in the wake of UNT’s win in the paper. What we haven’t done is talk about it much on the blog — a place where we can be a little more opinionated. 15. he season is over, but there is always something happening on the football front. Here are a few news items from the world of the Mean Green. – A UNT source said in the days leading up to the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl that the school was in the final stages of completing a contract extension for Dan McCarney. A second source with direct knowledge of the situation said that the school and McCarney are close to finishing out the deal. 16. Ok, now that I have caught your attention, this might not be as exciting as the headline makes it sound. But still. Vince Sanders, a wide receiver who was a career backup at Guyer, went to junior college and found his way to Baylor as a walk-on, plans to transfer to UNT and walk on with the Mean Green. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/01/unt-getting-baylor-transfer.html/
  17. Dan Kottmann, a former Guyer standout defensive tackle who spend two seasons at San Diego State, confirmed late Thursday night that he is planning to enroll at UNT in the next few days and will likely participate in spring practice. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/01/former-guyer-standout-plans-to-enroll-at-unt-will-be-updated.html/
  18. I stopped by UNT basketball practice today to pick up some material for the paper and the blog. The video at the top is one I shot with UNT men’s head coach Tony Benford and senior guard Alzee Williams. UNT’s win 61-41 over Texas A&M on New Year’s Eve kind of got lost in the euphoria of the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That’s understandable. 19. Senior Derek Thompson began the season facing questions about whether he would hold on to his job as North Texas starting quarterback. Those questions were nothing but a memory by late Wednesday, when he hoisted the MVP trophy after putting on a gutty performance to lead the Mean Green to a 36-14 win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl. Its was a pretty awesome experience to play in the Cotton Bowl my last game, Thompson said. To be able to finish out the way I did, and the way we did as a team with these seniors, was great. I love those guys. Read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/unt-mean-green/20140101-even-popped-out-patella-can-t-stop-unt-senior-qb-derek-thompson.ece
  20. UNT is headed to a bowl game for the first time since 2004 and the Denton Record-Chronicle is going all out for the occasion. If it seems like I have been MIA on the blog for a while, which I have, there is a good reason. I have been holed up in the office writing and designing the largest bowl section we have ever produced. The section will be 12 pages with not a sliver of wire content anywhere. It’s all UNT and UNLV all the time. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/12/the-heart-of-dallas-bowl-section-is-out-tomorrow.html/
  21. UNT is getting down to the bitter end when it comes to putting its 2014 recruiting class together. The Mean Green picked up commitments from a pair of junior college players here in the last few days. We told you all about quarterback Josh Greer and linebacker A.J. Smith a couple of days ago on the blog and in the paper. Official confirmation came today, although I was told that Greer can’t sign his national letter of intent until later this month. Well, he can sign it, but I don’t think UNT can turn it in to the NCAA until later. 22. Well, that didn’t go well. The UNT men were hoping to bounce back from a 30-point beating at BYU at home against SFA today, while the UNT women were looking to build on a win over rival UTA in a game at Northern Colorado. The UNT women fell 75-69, despite 27 points from Janis Peterson (we’ll get to that). The real zinger was that the UNT men were hammered by SFA 87-53. UNT has had some tough losses over the years, including during the high point of the Johnny Jones era, but this one just felt different. This was at home and it came at a time when faith in UNT’s hopes for a bounce back year seemed to be fading. Tony Benford called it the most embarrassing game he has ever been a part of. 23. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M linebacker Akii Smith will headline a group of about a half a dozen junior college prospects who will visit UNT this weekend, just days before the beginning of the midterm signing period on Dec. 18. Smith took an unofficial visit to UNT in the spring and recently took an official visit to Texas State. “I’m excited,” Smith said. “North Texas was the first school to offer me. I like that they are in Conference USA and the teams that they play. They are doing well this year. The coaches are great and the facilities are fantastic.” Smith, who is 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, is a middle linebacker, and can also play on the strong side. 24. The Heart of Dallas Bowl had its media call tonight. Here are a few highlights: – The real zinger was that Rick Villarreal and Dan McCarney talked a whole lot about how important it is for UNT fans to show up on New Year’s Day. “The fan base challenged us,” Rick Villarreal said. “Now we are challenging them.” Villarreal believes UNT has put the product the fans asked for on the field. Now he is expecting UNT’s fans to show up and support the team. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/12/hod-press-call-notes.html/
