  6. Usually, controversies involving Antonio Brown arise from his own behavior. The latest issue regarding Brown flows from something other than anything he’s done. Three weeks after Brown agreed to terms on a return to the Buccaneers, Brown still isn’t part of the roster. Coach Bruce Arians disclosed that Brown had knee surgery on Tuesday, and that he has yet to pass a physical. Until Brown passes a physical, he won’t be on the team. It’s hard not to be curious about the timing of the news of Brown’s agreement to return to the Bucs — one day before the 2021 draft began — and the fact that the Bucs traded up in round four to get North Texas receiver Jaelon Darden. A cynic would say that the Bucs struck the deal with Brown the day before the draft so that other teams wouldn’t think they’d be looking to draft another receiver. The fact that they gave up a sixth-round pick to move up to get Darden shows that they definitely were targeting the position. read more: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/05/19/antonio-brown-situation-raises-several-questions/
  7. During his previous season at North Texas, Bean started in 7 of the Mean Green’s 10 matchups, and for good reason: he’s quick. Bean has a knack for speed, however, his ability to quickly get the ball into receivers’ hands could grab head coach Lance Leipold’s attention. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for facilitating young potential in the quarterback seat. However, in Kansas’ case, going with an experienced, reliable quarterback may be the right move here. If Bean can “wow” this coaching staff, there could be a new look to the Jayhawks’ offense. Read more: https://throughthephog.com/2021/05/17/kansas-football-veteran-transfer-jason-bean-bring-table/

  10. TAMPA, FL - Jaelon Darden can move. “Being able to make guys miss, I feel like that’s what I do best,” said the Bucs’ rookie wide receiver. He’s already turning heads in just two short days of practice. “He’s super quick,” said Bucs head coach Bruce Arians. “Super quick and fast and catches the football extremely easily so, yea, he can be very explosive.” It’s easy to spot Darden on the field. He’s the little guy running around in the number one. While NFL players are celebrating the ability to wear the single digits of their youth or college days, Darden is cherishing that number for a whole different reason. “My dad (saw) me play in #1 so that means more to me than anything,” said Darden. read more: https://www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/sports/2021/05/16/news-bucs-wr-jaelon-darden-making-his-late-father-proud
  11. COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former NFL head coach and 30-year coaching veteran Scott Linehan has joined the Tigers staff as an offensive analyst, it was announced Thursday by Mizzou football head coach Eliah Drinkwitz. Most recently, Linehan served as Passing Game Coordinator at LSU (2020) and as Offensive Coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys (2015-18). “Scott Linehan is an exciting addition to our staff,” Drinkwitz said. “He’s a true veteran of the profession with experience at a variety of levels. We all look forward to working with him.” Linehan played quarterback at Idaho from 1982-86, earning team offensive MVP honors in 1986 when he led the team to an 8-4 overall mark and a berth in the I-AA playoffs. In 1984, Linehan passed for 2,407 yards and 17 TDs and then in 1986, he threw for 3,954 yards and 22 scores. He and his wife, Kristen, have three sons: Matt, Michael and Marcus. Matt – also a former Idaho quarterback (2014-17) – is currently a graduate assistant with Mizzou. Michael played collegiately at Idaho (2015-16) and North Texas (2018-19). read more: https://www.ozarkradionews.com/sports/nfl-veteran-scott-linehan-joins-football-coaching-staff

  14. The prototypical slot receiver is a piece of the puzzle that the Buccaneers' offense has lacked thus far under head coach Bruce Arians, but has now acquired in Darden. Arians instead opts to put bigger, more physical receivers in the slot such as Chris Godwin or even Mike Evans on occasion. In 2020, the 6-foot-1, 209 pound Chris Godwin played 55% of his reps from the slot, where he is dangerous thanks to his glue-like hands and crispy route running. Although Darden specializes in the slot, his speed allows him to create separation when lined up outside, especially when running 9 (go) routes. With his 4.46 40 yard time and unbelievable 6.67 three-cone result (ranked in the 91st percentile), Darden is a speed demon with cutting agility that unlocks another dimension of Tampa Bay's offense. read more: https://www.si.com/nfl/buccaneers/front-office/tampa-bay-buccaneers-jaelon-darden-scouting-report-nfl-draft
  15. I'm so glad that things are going well for the University of Texas at El Paso. It's beginning to get back on track after the coronavirus attack. I’ve covered UTEP sports since I was a rookie sports writer at the El Paso Herald-Post and I’ve continued covering the Miners to this day. I’ve covered football, basketball, track and field, all other sports – and even baseball when Andy Cohen volunteered to coach the team. So, yes, I have a special part of my heart for the Miners – and it’s been a heck of a lot of fun covering them. THIS FROM JEFF DARBY, head of the sports information department at UTEP: “Joe Golding, who led Abilene Christian to the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons and an upset win over third-seeded Texas in this year’s March Madness, was appointed the 20th head coach in UTEP men’s basketball history on (April 13). read more: http://www.elpasoinc.com/lifestyle/utep-sports-getting-along-on-solid-ground-after-pandemic/article_7372e47a-af50-11eb-85cb-8b792d04ba9a.html
  16. Braden Smith offered by Purdue The recruitment of Westfield guard Braden Smith shifted significantly Monday evening when Purdue offered a scholarship during a Zoom call. Smith, a 6-foot guard who averaged 22.0 points and 6.2 assists as a junior while shooting 45.1% from the 3-point line, had previous offers from IUPUI, Appalachian State, Belmont, Montana, North Texas and Toledo. Purdue is the first high-major offer for Smith but certainly not the last. The Boilermakers, who have IndyStar Mr. Basketball Caleb Furst and runner-up Trey Kaufman-Renn signed in the 2021 class, along with Indiana All-Star Brian Waddell, already have a commitment from Homestead’s Fletcher Loyer in the 2022 class. Purdue also has an offer out to 6-10 Jalen Washington of Gary West Side, a top-25 national prospect in the 2022 class. Purdue coach Matt Painter has been successful identifying, recruiting and retaining in-state players in recent seasons. Whether that means anything in Smith’s recruitment is still to be seen, but it does seem significant that Purdue is his first high-major offer. 17. Within two weeks, four Fresno State women’s basketball players have transferred to different programs. Gamez announced on April 7 that she will be attending Conference USA member school, North Texas. The school is just 36 miles away from her hometown of Irving, Texas. “We are bringing another star guard back home,” North Texas head coach Jalie Mitchell said in a news release. “Aly’s winning mentality and dedication to the game, as well as her exceptional court vision, clutch play and championship experience take us another step closer to postseason success. 22. Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale has placed another exorbitant gamble on a Houston sports team. This time, it's $1 million on the Houston Cougars winning the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The odds of the furniture owner's wager sat at 9-1 odds, meaning he would win $9 million if the hometown program can come through for him. He made the gamble with DraftKings, and the organization says that it's one of the largest March Madness bets on record. "Anything can happen in March Madness as we all know, but I'm ten toes down on Houston to bring the national title to Texas, and willing to stake a million dollars with DraftKings on that outcome," said McIngvale, per KPRC 2. read more: https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/mattress-mack-places-1-million-bet-on-houston-to-win-2021-ncaa-tournament/
