  1. “Fire in the hole!” “Fire in the hole!” “Fire in the hole!” With the third warning, a thunderous noise boomed through the stadium and white smoke hung in the air. Yells of enthusiasm filled the green and white’s territory as the start of a Mean Green football game had been announced by Boomer the cannon. He may not be the only Mean Green fan who has been attending University of North Texas games since the 1970s, but he’s definitely the loudest. He sounds off every time the Mean Green score, at kick-off, half-time, and at the conclusion of each game. The cannon crew, a committee within the student organization Talons, is comprised of 11 handlers, who work together to care for Boomer. The head of the cannon crew, CJ Hart, prides himself in his position and is honored to maintain a UNT tradition of Boomer’s magnitude. “It’s one of the most memorable traditions we have here on campus,” Hart said. “Anyone who goes to a football game will hear the cannon. Even if you’re not in the stands, if you’re around, you’re going to hear Boomer.” Safety is a huge concern for the cannon crew. Each member of the cannon crew goes through safety training and has extensive knowledge of how to handle any situation that could arise from firing the cannon. Each member wears fire-resistant jumpsuits to protect them in the event of a fire, but they decorate their suits to transform them into their own unique spirit uniforms. There are a lot of college campuses in Texas that have cannons or artillery, but UNT’s cannon is the only one operated by a non-military group. The Talons had already been operating a cannon prior to the creation of this mandate, so the organization was grandfathered in and allowed to keep the tradition alive, Hart said. This is a source of pride and anxiety for Talons because if anything were to go wrong, they could lose their privilege of caring for Boomer and the tradition that they have always been responsible for. “We value the cannon so much,” Bobby Powell, co-head of the cannon crew said. read more: https://www.discoverdenton.com/behind-scenes-mean-green-footballs-loudest-fan/
  2. North Texas trailed Southern Miss 21-14 with 45 seconds remaining in the first half in Week 5. Following a loss on first down and false start, they faced a 2nd-and-16 from their own 14-yard-line. Instead of packing it in, Mean Green head coach Seth Littrell showed trust in his sophomore quarterback. Mason Fine faked the handoff to running back Jeffery Wilson, took a five-step drop and launched deep to Caleb Chumley for a 43-yard gain that set up a last-second field goal. Yep, Fine's shoulder is just . . . fine. Fine was the lone quarterback signee in Littrell's first class in Denton. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound two-star recruit from Oklahoma committed to the program during a visit in January 2016, seven weeks after Littrell, also a native Oklahoman, was hired. “After Seth saw the film, he said, ‘I’ve got to have this guy," recalled Matt Hennesy, Fine's coach at Locust Grove High School. “I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and Mason is the best high school quarterback I’ve seen.” read more: https://m.herosports.com/college-football/north-texas-football-mason-fine-start-ahah
  3. Lee Jackson plans to do a lot more than just clean out his desk and say his goodbyes during his last full workday Friday as chancellor of the University of North Texas System. He's got a meeting at 7:30 a.m., a charity fundraising luncheon at noon and a visit to University of North Texas at Dallas scheduled for the afternoon. "I told people a long time ago that I was going to work until 5 o'clock because that's consistent with my life," he said. The chancellor of 15 years, the longest tenure in Texas, had a lot to say during a Tuesday interview about how he plans to stay engaged until the end — and beyond. For example, when asked how these last few months have been, knowing that his time as chancellor is coming to an end, his 20-minute-long answer touched on his thoughts on his career, politics and the cost of attending college. Jackson's appointment as chancellor in 2002 raised some eyebrows. It was considered unusual at the time to hire a career politician — he's a former state legislator and Dallas County judge — to a top academic post. But Jackson's tenure reshaped the UNT System. Since he started, the system has added UNT-Dallas, a new campus in economically challenged south Dallas. It has also enrolled thousands more students, spent millions of dollars more on research and raised its six-year-graduation rate to 51 percent. And during Jackson's time, the way state leaders view the job of chancellor has shifted. Now, four of the five chancellors of the state's other big systems are nonacademics — Brian McCall of Texas State, Robert Duncan of Texas Tech and John Sharp of Texas A&M are former state politicians, and Bill McRaven of the University of Texas is a retired Navy admiral. Jackson's replacement will be another "nontraditional" choice: former NASA administrator Lesa Roe. Here are the highlights from the interview, edited and rearranged chronologically for clarity: read more: https://www.texastribune.org/2017/10/05/outgoing-unt-chancellor-federal-inactivity-student-debt-biggest-threat/
  4. This was a guy mentioned as a replacement for Mac. Looks like he has turned Tulane around pretty quickly. Winner -- Tulane coach Willie Fritz: He has a history of taking big steps forward during Year 2 of rebuilding projects. It looks like Tulane is next to take that step following a whopping 62-28 win over Tulsathat included 488 yards rushing. This was a 48-7 game at the half. Fritz has won everywhere he's gone, and at this rate, he's earning himself another job -- perhaps in the Power Five. Tulane may not win the AAC -- although at this point, who knows -- but they're going to be a thorn for a lot of opponents. This is a fun team. read more: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-winners-and-losers-week-6-strong-showing-from-state-of-texas/
  5. A television ad for this Saturday's Michigan-Michigan State showdown refers to the Spartans as "Mean Green." An athletic director in Texas isn't happy about that. Wren Baker, the athletic director at North Texas, tweeted on Tuesday night that he's sending Michigan State and ESPN a cease and desist letter over what he calls the unauthorized usage of a trademarked nickname. North Texas says it has been using the moniker for its athletic teams since the 1960's, when its defensive line featured future NFL Hall of Famer Joe Greene. Baker told USA Today on Tuesday night that the school's attorneys planned on sending letters to Michigan State and ESPN on Wednesday morning. He also referenced a basketball game last year, when Michigan State wore lime green uniforms that were referred to as "Mean Green Hyper Elite." According to a Michigan State spokesperson, Spartans athletic director Mark Hollis reached out to Baker on Wednesday morning "expressing MSU's and the athletic department's awareness of the importance of the trademark, and assuring him that we would not intentionally intrude upon its connection to North Texas." read more: http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2017/10/north_texas_upset_over_tv_ad_t.html
  6. North Texas caught wind of an eyebrow-raising ESPN ad promoting this weekend’s clash between Big Ten rivals Michigan and Michigan State. In the ad, Michigan State was referred to as the “Mean Green.” Shortly after criticism of the ad began going viral on social media, North Texas athletic director Wren Baker fired off a tweet saying he will be sending a cease-and-desist letter to the Worldwide Leader. North Texas owns the trademark to the nickname, and has for a “very, very long time.” read more: https://campussports.net/2017/10/04/north-texas-sends-cease-desist-letter-to-espn-for-using-mean-green/
  7. Got word that one of our own UNT RTF alums will be directing the UTSA vs. UNT TV game broadcast. The show is from a TV station in SA but a large portion of his crew is from the Bill Mercer School of Sports Broadcasting, including the on-air talent. Always makes proud to see one of our own having success in their chosen fields. GMG!
  8. Sept. 11, 2017 THE FLATS - Four of the first five home games (Northwestern excluded) on Georgia Tech’s schedule are part of the Ramblin’ Wreck Showcase. North Texas is the third game of that event, Nov. 24 at McCamish Pavilion. This is the fifth in a series of previews of the Yellow Jackets' non-conference opponents. Location: Denton, Texas Conference: Conference USA Home arena: The Super Pit (10,500) 2016-17 Record: 8-22 overall, 2-16 in C-USA (14th), 338th in NCAA RPI Post-Season: None NCAA Postseason Appearances: Three (last 2010) All-time series record: 1-0, Georgia Tech (1997-98) Head coach: Grant McCasland (entering first season) Starters returning/lost: 2/3 Top scorer returning: A.J. Lawson (11.4) Top rebounder returning: Shane Temara (4.6) Quick preview for 2017-18 Looking to regain the program’s stride of old, first-year head coach Grant McCasland will have to capitalize on the young, raw talent currently on his roster in order to compete with the tough Conference USA. Helping lead that charge will be A.J. Lawson, who is coming of his best year collegiately and looking to up his scoring average. In the paint, the Mean Green will have to replace their leading rebounder in Jeremy Combs. Shane Temara wasn’t far behind him in the average, but could be exactly the board crasher they need with another year of experience under his belt. 12. "For Conference USA, the AAC, and the Sun Belt they've chased the traditional modalities: market size, TV eyes, populous areas etc. They've worked under the illusion that a broadcast company is going to reimburse them for the reach of their media markets. That's gotten them to where they are now, millions of dollars behind the Power 5. The illusion is that Old Dominion brings ESPN or Fox the Norfolk area. It doesn't. The same way that SMU or North Texas or even TCU don't bring ESPN the Metroplex on a silver platter. TV execs know where the value is and what drives ratings and for eastern Virginia it's the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech or North Carolina. Texas, Texas A&M and OU bring eyes from the Metroplex. Florida and Florida deliver the greater Miami area if at all, not FAU or FIU..." http://swcroundup.com/news/2017/4/11/a-p...ign=buffer
