  1. Rest assured, there isnt an ounce of dismay around UNLV today. Four years after he arrived from one of those deep fishing holes in Montana, the ones were he might stand in the middle of a blizzard to cast his line for a trout he most always would release, Bobby Hauck has led UNLV into somewhat uncharted waters. This is just the fourth time in program history the Rebels will go bowling and the first in nearly three decades they will do so in another state, thanks to a 7-5 record in which Haucks team won more games than the previous three years combined. The opponent is also one of college footballs feel-good stories of 2013, a program much like UNLV that has rebuilt itself from the ashes of obscurity. North Texas finished third in the West Division of Conference USA and won six of its last seven games. It seems like a good time, then, to learn a little about the Mean Green: ▶ The University of North Texas is located in Denton, near the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex between Oklahoma and Texas on Interstate 35. It lies on the southern end of what is commonly referred to as Tornado Alley, meaning Smatresk could move into his new house one day and be a modern-day Dorothy flying his way to Oz the next. Which I suppose would make Gerry Bomotti the Wicked Financial Witch of the East. ▶ You can drive from the middle of campus to Cotton Bowl Stadium in 50 minutes on a clear day, meaning the Mean Green should have a decided advantage in seats filled. Hauck on a conference call Sunday evening said he hopes North Texas brings all of Denton and any neighboring counties, because if one thing looks better on television than a New Years Day bowl, its one with actual people cheering it. 5. PREVIEW: MIDDLE TENNESSEE AT NORTH TEXAS: This Saturday, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (3-3, 1-1) travel to Denton to take on the North Texas Mean Green (2-3, 0-1) in a matchup of two former Sun Belt Conference rivals that are now looking to conquer Conference USA. The Blue Raiders will be looking to turn things around after losing their last two games while the Mean Green will be looking to secure their first conference victory. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CT. This series has seen quite the pendulum swing over the years. After being dominated by the Mean Green in the early 2000's, MT turned things around under head coach Rick Stockstill. To date, however, North Texas leads the series between the two teams by a 7-to-5 margin. Continued....
  6. After finishing 2012 on a five-game winning streak, Rice should be Tulsa’s top challenger in the West. The Owls return 18 starters and won’t play Marshall or East Carolina during the regular season. Louisiana Tech and UTEP are neck-and-neck for the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. The Bulldogs suffered a plethora of personnel losses, but welcome Texas Tech transfer Scotty Young at quarterback. The Miners also have a transfer at quarterback – Jameill Showers from Texas A&M - but return only three starters on defense. Both teams have a new coaching staff, with UTEP under the direction of former player Sean Kugler, and Louisiana Tech led by former USF and Connecticut coach Skip Holtz. Tulane, North Texas and UTSA round out the West Division predictions. The Green Wave should show some signs of improvement in 2013, and the schedule is favorable enough to expect a run at bowl eligibility. North Texas is also making progress under third-year coach Dan McCarney, but expecting a huge jump in win total is unlikely for 2013. The Roadrunners went 8-4 in their first season on the FBS level last season. However, the schedule is very challenging, and coach Larry Coker needs another year or two to build depth in the program. 7. Wide receiver Hunter Jarmon (Waco, Texas/Midway) has four of his five official visits set. That fifth school will be set at a later time in the fall – if at all. Jarmon, one of the premier receivers in central Texas, said he will make officials to Kansas on Sept. 15, Minnesota on Sept. 22, Iowa State on Sept. 29 and Oregon State on Nov. 3. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound receiver, the son of former Baylor running back James Jarmon (1984-87), has offers from all four schools, in addition to Missouri, North Texas, New Mexico, SMU and Tulsa. “They’re all on my list right now, but anybody can be in the final run,” Jarmon said. “These schools have shown me the most interest.” Read more: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/post?id=17065&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fblog%2fncfrecruiting%2fon-the-trail%2fpost%3fid%3d17065
  8. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/06/keller-ol-commits-to-unt.html/ " Cody Nelson, an offensive lineman from Keller, committed to UNT on Monday. UNT recruited Nelson, 6-5, 270 pounds, as a tackle. “I love the coaches and it’s close to home,” Nelson said late Tuesday. UNT made Nelson a priority in recruiting and offered him a scholarship early. Nelson said that Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech told him that there was a possibility that he would be offered a scholarship if he attended their summer camps. Nelson said that being a higher priority for UNT made the difference."
  9. An early peek... http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&view=2&yr=2013 Arkansas State has a good defensive lineman signed up — one from Western Kentucky’s backyard, by the way. FIU has three players committed, including two offensive linemen Rivals.com lists as three-star players.
