  1. LETSGIVEACHEER is correct. It was the Pit. The visiting coach said in a interview that is was as "bad as a snake pit." I'd like to know who that coach was. I'll work on that. Anyway, that's why our "new" coliseum is known as "the Super Pit."
  2. I'll be there. But I'm not buying the notion that the move to the Ken Bahnsen "Men's Gym" is "a walk down memory lane." There must be something else going on at the Coliseum. I guess I saw my first college game there as well. NT used to have dances at Men's Gym and I heard a lot of bands that came through Denton Back in the 60s. I put up a really good banner when NT hosted Louisville one year. It was so creative, I won a trip to the Dean of Men's office. Is there still a "Dean of Men ?" If you're going to the game at the old Snake Pit, you'd better get there early. I don't think it seats as many today as it did back in the 60s. GO MEAN GREEN
  3. As promised, Rick Villarreal spoke at Kiwanis this morning. He was outstanding. He spoke of the stadium and the student senate vote. But he also talked about what a yes vote, or more especially, a no vote would mean to the University, city and county. The very well written article by David Anderson in this morning's D R-C was also something RV refered to. Though not by name. It never occurred to me that only 120 communities have a D-1 football program. San Antonio doesn't. Amarillo doesn't. Oklahoma City doesn't. Sherevepost, LA. doesn't. What Denton has would be coveted by many fairly large US cities. RV talked about other successes that NT Athletics has had. Basketball, soccer, swimming/diving. Tennis. He never used a note and probably could have talked all day. I was proud. PS. We sponsor a Circle K Club at UNT. There were about 6 or 8 members present this morning. Rick spoke to them. As if they could vote. Oh yeah...they can.
  4. Any clips of Jamario's game at boulder ? I was there and NT had the Buffs reeling for a while. Owl...the other white meat GO MEAN GREEN
  5. I recall back in the 60s when the lights at Fouts Field were replaced. The old (original ?) lights were moved to Bronco Field (Bronco Field originally had lights between the stands and the field). Anyway, the current lights at Fouts are at least the second set of lights. I recall during a game back when Fred McCain was the Athletic Director, we were playing somebody, and I overheard a visiting fan remark about the number of burned out lamps in the lghts. He was convinced that they were unscrewed to spell out "go NT" or something crazy. I mentioned it to Fred later. "We would never do that," he said GO MEAN GREEN
  6. Rick will be our guest speaker next Wednesday, Sept 24. We meet at 6:30AM ( that's right AM) at the Luby's on I-35E. It's next to the Albertson's and behind Chili's and the Blackeyed Pea. The meeting is usually over by 7:45 but for sure by 8:00. Breakfast cost is $7. If you want to come, let me know so I can tell Luby's. There will be an oportunity for Q and A Owl...the other white meat GO MEAN GREEN
  7. That's how stadiums were build back in the old days. Look at Memorial Stadium in Austin. And Kyle field in S.C. They all had tracks before the stands were extended toward the field. LSU's Tiger Stadium looked the same way. There was an old concrete wall originally, and 2 or 3 rows of seating were added in front of said wall. It was done for efficiency. two venues in one. Good idea on paper. Bad idea in the stands. Owl...The other white meat GO MEAN GREEN
  8. The best version of the National Anthem is by our own Green Brigade. I've heard the Aggie Band, the Marine Corp Band, the L.S.U. Band, and the J. Giles Band, and no one can touch the Green Brigade. "But you can't have a full blown band at a basketball game," you say. And that's just a shame.
  9. I just called my hotel (Wednesday morning 10:00am). I've got reservations at a hotel in Houston's Museum District near Rice. They answered as if they've answered the question for the millioneth time. ""We have full lights and power." "So everythings good ?" I said. "We have full lights and power. Yes sir." Game on. Owl...The other white meat. GO MEAN GREEN
  10. If you're already making contributons to the Mean Green Club, and already buying season tickets, Thank you. Your type of fan is what makes the Athletic Dept work. But we're talking about three different things here. First, your season tickets. Tickets are not a contributiion. You are buying entertainment. That's why tickets are not tax decuctible. You're getting something, hopefully, for your entertainment dollar. Next, your Mean Green Club donation is what makes the department run. Without these dollars, nobody coaches, travels, or answers the phone. The stadium is a new expense that we want to create. And I see it as a needed expense. But it is it's own expense. Not to be taken out of tickets or athletic department operations, but it's own line item. Again, if you're already making Mean Green contributions and already buying season tickets, thanks. We need about 100,000 more like you. And if you're waiting to be asked to contribute to the new stadium, well, I'm asking. Don't wait until some paid athletic staff member gets down to your name. You know what's needed. Step us and help make this stadium project a reality. GO MEAN GREEN
  11. The Baltimore Orioles organization have a good idea. One submits a tape of the National Anthem. If they select that version to be used at a game, the TAPE is played. The microphone is dead. There is no chance that anything not already approved gets out. And except that I just told you, no one ever knows the difference. By the way, I look at the National Anthem as a hymn. I'm not sure it needs to be played before a sporting event or NASCAR race, but if it is, it should be played/sung with the respect given other hymns.
  12. NT80-I see it differently. I see the Mean Green Club membership as maintenance. The day to day running of the Athletic Dept. Scholarships, salaries, stamps, etc. I see the stadium as a separate item. Something that some day, could be a retired debt. If you are making a Mean Green Club donation, I thank you. We need more like you. However, the stadium building project needs you as well. We can't fund the stadium out of Mean Green money. If we did, the Athletic Dept. couldn't operate at the level it's running now. So write three checks. One with Mean Green in the memo. One with season tickets in the memo. And a third with your stadium contribution. And we don't have to wait on the big donors to step up. It's up to us. Owl...the other white meat. GO MEAN GREEN
  13. If we're going to ask North Texas Students to help pay for our new stadium, I think each of us need to pay as well. Those of us that attend NT home games will be the big winners here. Along with a more recognized degree for our graduates. But we need to make contributions similar to the $120. per semester we're asking future NT students to make. GO MEAN GREEN
  14. I would like to see the Joe Greene "Hey Kid" Coke commercial computer altered to have Mean Joe wearing a Green North Texas jersery. Just for fun. Bye week...the other white meat. GO MEAN GREEN
  15. The wife and I left Friday for Baton Rouge. We encountered some rain about midway to BR but nothing scary. (note: roads are not as well marked in Louisiana as in Texas. Here, one wouldn't drive too long to see the route number or distance to the next town. Not so in LA. ) We got up Saturday morning and had a great breakfast and visited with some LSU fans at the hotel restaurant. Then, we took a tour of the hotel, drawn by Huey Long on the back of a bar napkin, and visited the old and current State capitol building. Went to the State museum and had an excellent meal before the game. Lots of LSU fans asked about Texas (!) and our "college". I never came across anyone that wasn't friendly and anxious to help us with our questions. We took the shuttle to the game and found the same friendly fans and felt a lot out of place. There were 91,600 fans in purple and yellow, and about 9 people dressed in Green. But again, no one said anything unfriendly. I've said this before. North Texas fans MUST wear GREEN at an out of town game. White, grey, and black are too easily confused with the home team. There aren't many green teams. We need to do a better job of identifying ourselves on the road. And at home for that matter. We sat on the 47 yard line on the 6th row behind the NT bench. What a wonderful college gameday atmosphere. Loud and constant. The band was playing when we entered the stadium about an hour and fifiteen before kickoff, and didn't stop except to enter and exit the field. They took no breaks and the dancers (the Golden Girls) sat in the stands with the band and danced to every song. No breaks ever. We did the tourist thing along the way back and got rained on again. Perhaps my best North Texas road game experience ever. Except for that game thing. I'd recommend Baton Rouge to anyone but expecially for a game. I hope to go back again soon.
  16. What arrangements were made prior to the hurricane ? I made hotel rewervations about 6 months ago. At RV's suggestion, I called to make sure I still had reservations. I did. No problem. Tiger--the other white meat GO MEAN GREEN
  17. He was on the JV team at Denton High when my son was a senior in the 2000 season. He is huge. Although not too much bigger now than then. I understand he holds the record as being the biggest baby ever born in the state of Louisiana. It's probably in the D R-C because he is a Denton kid palying in a big time school/conference and likely to get a chance to play professionally. It always seemed strange to me that a tall man would be a good choice for an offensive lineman. Too hard to throw over. I would think a Brandon Kennedy tye would make a better offensive lineman-big, quick, and not very tall. Easy to throw over. Tiger--the other white meat GO MEAN GREEN
  18. A picture is worth a thousand words. But a video is worth, like, seven or eight thousand words. Maybe eight thousand five hundred words. ANYBODY GOT A VIDEO ??
  19. I've tried to find the video of the new stadium project. I looked on meangreensports.com but I can't find it. Does anyone know where the video can be viewed ? Tiger...The other white meat
  20. I got your message, Cripp. I'll try to find you at Team Katt. Thanks for the invite. Joe Tiger...the other white meat.
  21. One of the keys to getting this stadium done is making it as "green" as possible. Some will look anywhere they can to find fault with this project. Perhaps some of the nay sayers could be swayed with the agrument that this is an experiment that could lead to more green innovations. Tiger - The other white meat
  22. I was surprised to see Riley play Saturday night. I had hoped he would red shirt. However, Shaft made a point I'd never considered--Maybe Riley and his family want him to be out of college in 4 years, not 5. I don't think he has a pro career ahead of him, and if so, this makes sense. And by the way, check to see--I recall Riley was committed to Texas as an ATHLETE, not a WR. He's obviously got a ton of talent. And perhaps Todd sees Vizza as the better quaterbacvk and this is a way to get Riley on the field.
