Dennis Franchione hired Dickey as his new co-offensive coordinator at Texas State. He hired his son to the staff as well. Seems like pretty good hires to me....

Sam Houston State has named six finalists for its vacant head football coach position, among them former University of Houston coach Kim Helton, current UH co-offensive coordinator Jason Phillips, former Blinn College coach Willie Fritz and Klein Oak coach Dave Smith. Sam Houston State athletics director Bobby Williams said the on-campus interviews will take place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Bearkats are looking for a replacement for Todd Whitten, who was fired last month. “At that point, I will consult with university president Dr. James Gaertner and we will work together to reach a decision as soon as possible,” Williams said in a statement. The other three candidates are New Mexico offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey, who led North Texas to four straight Sun Belt titles and former A&M Consolidated and Killeen Harker Heights head coach Ross Rogers. I am proud of our large student body, but it's not about school size. Remember, UTSA has about 25,000 students and Notre Dame probably has between 5000 and 8000.

Also, did anyone address the moratorium issue. I thought the NCAA was letting WKU in as the last school.

What's up with Cam? He looked very good with the few carries he got last year and they didn't use him much. I was at the SMU game last year and Mosely looked solid, but Montgomery looked much better when he came in, but they rarely ran him. Is he not a good blocker? Did he piss the coaches off?

I know I must be in the extreme minority right now, but I have always liked Chris Berman. Believe it or not, sports reporting was boring before him. Everybody gets pissed here and there. Especially with idiots at work. It's OK if you've never liked him, but now everybody's going to jump on the "let's wave our shame on you finger" all over this dude just from one youtube clip. Let's not forget that June Jones does have some Texas ties. He coached for the Houston Oilers and the Houston Gamblers (USFL). I also agree that it doesn't really matter, though. You can make success wherever you go. GMG!

I applaud the coach for sticking up for his player, but I think he went a little far with the tirade. I see his point in that it might be a bit unfair to print this sort of editorial on an amateur athelete, but just remember that we have a little thing in this country called the 1st amendment that protects our freedom of speech and opinion. Also, I seem to remember my parents giving me one piece of advice that might be relevant here. They said "Son, sometimes people are going to talk bad about you. Let it go. Don't let it bother you. If it still bothers you that much, prove 'em wrong." I like that you protect your players coach, but maybe everybody needs just a little bit thicker skin. GMG!

I tend to agree. With our defense struggling so bad, some of these teams might hand it to us pretty good this season..... ouch. GMG!

I drove up from Austin yesterday and here are my thoughts: 1. Linebackers are slow. I think we will give up a lot of points this year. I was, however, glad to see A.J. Penson get on the field. 2. Defensive line looked better than I thought they would. 3. I decided to key on our left tackle, Matt Menard. He looked good to me. He was moving very well all night in my opinion. 4. Micah Mosely looked solid, but why are we not playing our best players? I'm guessing Jamario was hurt, but Cam Montgomery looked like he could have really contributed last night had he been given more playing time. Baffling. 5. Their punter is good. Our punter looked good, too (not the first punt.) That 70 something yard punt really bailed us out of a bad situation temporarily. 6. Their touchdown to end the first half really hurt. 7. Good crowd for us. 8. Band sounded great. 9. I saw good coaching and fair adjustments last night. Not used to seeing that from the previous staff. Casey Fitzgerald has great hands. That is all. GMG!

1995 - @ OU... I think we were up 2-0 for a while in the first half. I was in the Green Brigade. Good 'ole QB battle that year between Jason Mills and Josh Gulley. GMG!

I know, guys. I was trying to be funny (unsuccessfully). However, that does bring up a legitimate question. How may can make the final roster and at what point do they have to reach that number?

I think this is a very interesting topic. It seems fairly obvious at all levels of football that the key to winning most games involves the effectiveness of your offensive line. I think that the offensive line is the most important position on the field with the defensive line being a very close second. Most teams want to find guys that are big, quick, athletic, and strong. I guess the real question here is this: Can you be equally effective with quick, athletic, and strong without the big? I think the answer to this question might be yes. The Denver Broncos o-line comes to mind, but the guy that sticks out in my mind the most is Mark Stepnoski. Stepnoski was maybe 270 pounds at best, but he was a MASTERFUL technician when it came to controlling the line of scrimmage. With the Cowgirls, he was as big a reason as any that Emmitt Smith ran for as many yards as he did, but for the ultimate evidence, you need look no further than his time with the Houston Oilers. There is a reason that Eddie George ran for so many yards early in his career. I used to watch those games when they were still in Houston. Stepnoski and Bruce Matthews (who might be the best offensive lineman of all-time) could take huge interior d-lineman and carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey. The guy that comes to mind at North Texas is Andy Brewster. I think he played most of his career at a relatively light weight, but he was very technically skilled. I'm sure that with Todd Dodge's offense, this kind of o-line will help us. This is my humble opinion. GMG!
