  2. Cooley's post in DRC: UNT women pick up transfer was marked as the answer
It seems that all new UNT coaches, in all sports, for as long as I can remember,  tend to coast in the the first few years of their 5-year contract. (Recruiting)
Have we ever had a coach with very impressive recruiting the first 2 years on Bonnie Brae? There's never a sense of urgency.
  3. Cooley's post in '18 DT Calvin Avery (Bishop Dunne) was marked as the answer
I called the coaches/recruiting office twice seeking info on Jr Day. Both messages went unanswered and unreturned.  Following the recorded instructions, I left my name, cell #, email address as well as my relationship to Calvin and his High Major  teammate. Both were thoroughly looking forward to the visit with me the next morning.
As things turn out, we didn't hear back from UNT and Calvin was reminded very late that he had committed to attend the Tx Tech scrimmage at the Star in Frisco (about the same time).
As I had assumed, his grandfather (my brother in law) has taken on the leading  role as primary advisor. He's insisting that  Calvin focus on those schools who shows the most interest in him. UNT didn't register at all in this category.
Suprised he put this out so soon. I'm interested to know where recent offers from Florida St and ND affects this list. I know he wants an offer from Alabama and LSU

  5. Cooley's post in Mike Miller of Shawnee CC (6'3 PG, 2017) To Visit This Weekend was marked as the answer
I don't see this kid as the "pass first" point guard we need to back up Woolridge.

    They both have offers
  7. Cooley's post in DRC; McCasland addresses students, Combs still pondering future was marked as the answer
Does anyone have the contact info for coach McCasland. 2 very good local prospects are interested in UNT but the info submitted has not been acknowledged. (Probably due to the change) Both are All-State and All Area players.
  8. Cooley's post in Assuming we get a new coach was marked as the answer
If I'm the new coach, I would seriously think about not bringing Pittman or Fuller back. Use those scholarships on better players. Can't imagine Frazier coming back. He would only have 1 semester to play. Would/Could he sit another semester to play conference games?
Hope Baker considers a coach that can come with an impact package. Zach Simmons may end up being a steal. Though a nice project, I would hate to lose him in the transition. I can see him pushing Brice in the middle but needs more bulk and muscle. Wainwright didn't show me much the only time I saw him but that team was loaded. Don't see him making that much of an impact. Not a great shooter and hates to bring the ball up the court.
  9. Cooley's post in MGB: UNT picks up hoops commitment was marked as the answer
Zach is really coming on. Was MVP last week in Cedar Hill's tournament. Had a good game against DeSoto last night. I saw an earlier line where he had 12 points. Don't think that was accurate. I had him with about 17 points, 15 rebounds and about 7-8 blocks. (Didn't play the 2nd quarter after picking up 2 fouls in the first)
Surely will move up in the rankings from 91 (in one poll and 66 in another) to at least 30th in the state. Looking like a much better pick up for the Green. Not a star but should add more depth at C/F

Clearly Cedar Hill & DeSoto from North Texas. Allen, only because they have 3 times the students as CH & DeSoto. Surprising is Coppell.
    Others around the state:
Tyler John Tyler,  Manvel, Cibolo Steele, LaMarque, W. Orange Stark, Houston Washington & Madison.

  11. Cooley's post in MGB: UNT picks up commitment from JC guard was marked as the answer
He is (Ryan Woolridge). Reese is a senior. I think Woolridge backs Reese up this year. This kid looks more like a point than a 2 (actually a combo). Either Woolridge or this kid looks like the starter at point in 2017/18 at this point.

  12. Cooley's post in MGB: UNT men's hoops in mix for UALR grad transfer was marked as the answer
Simply because of the scholarship numbers available. (13 to 85)  The hope is that 1 or 2 guys can or will turn a program around in basketball (or be a key contributor) There is also not as much development in basketball from a kid's fr year to sr year. You generally know early if a kid can play or not. The player also realizes early his chances of playing.  Why keep a kid around that's at the end of your bench? If you're a competitive kid, why hang around if you can't crack the top 10?.
There are 3 times as many D1 programs in basketball for kids to transfer to. Kids are allowed to leave for the NBA after their freshman year compared to football where they must wait 2 before bolting to the NFL.
It generally takes 4-5 years to turn a bad football program around, whereas, maybe 2-3 in basketball. Coaches seem to feel more pressure to win sooner in hoops.
I think coaches owe it to their players to be realistic about playing time. If a kid has graduated or is a cancer, they should mutually part ways. Running off a few kids in football will not make as great a difference in the numbers. Besides, injuries are more prevalent; where depth is needed more. Bench players in football can be looked to for special teams help.
    Currently over 600 (All levels)

  13. Cooley's post in Assistant Coach was marked as the answer
This doesn't make much sense (if true). You would think that a first time HC would reach out to someone with a lot more experience. I know we all want Jalie to be successful but you have to question this potential hire. Foreman isn't much older than the kids she will be coaching.

Would Tina Slinker consider coming back as an assistant to help Jalie like Rob Evans to Tony Benford?
  14. Cooley's post in New Mexico JC center to visit this weekend was marked as the answer
I've seen this kid twice (In Carrollton & Duncanville with the Latinos Select AAU team). At the time, I thought he was one of the more impressive big men I saw. Don't know why he has not flourished but I would not be disappointed with the signing. He's not a stiff and was very effective down low. Reminded me of Tyler Davis of Plano West (A&M signee). Obviously not the impact guy I was/am hoping for down low but a badly needed big body. I think I mentioned him on here in the past. That Latinos Select team, btw, was very good!
  15. Cooley's post in Ouch! was marked as the answer
Interesting names appearing on the ever growing transfer list (2015). Available immediately is Texas A&M's (DeSoto, HS) Antwan Space. Exactly the type of player I would like to see us pick up as a stretch 4. Graduates in May. Ties to Jordan Williams and J'Mychael Reese. Arkansas' Nick Babb (Arlington Martin) as a shooting guard. Houston's Egi Gjikondi. I think we were after him before he committed to UH.

The list will continue to grow and with bigger names over the next few weeks.

I thought the tribute to George Dunham was 1st class. Amazing to hear from all the NT connections in the sports media around DFW and the state.

As for as the game is concerned, I thought everyone played well (other than Voss tonight) . I think the team is playing as well as they can play. Benford seems to know this team much better than his previous teams. I also agreed with his substitutions and frequency. What a difference a year can make! They are much better playing man to man the entire game.

Really excited about what next year can look like with the 3 guard lineup of Harris, Anifiok and Reese on the floor together.

    Go Mean Green!
  18. Cooley's post in Vito Says Thompson is HOF-Worthy was marked as the answer
Derek Thompson, (and all other quarterbacks in the modern era) should be putting up larger numbers based on the spread offenses which didn't exist back in the day. Before Texas Tech (college) and Southlake Carroll (High School) and others, most schools ran the ball 60% -70% of the time. You CAN NOT use passing statistics to compare or rank quarterbacks from different era's. If anyone insists on using passing statistics you must include their INT's as well.

Dan McCarney is as conservative as they come but he was more conservative with Derek Thompson. For 3 years, Derek was a turnover, sack or bad throw waiting to happen. This coach did not trust him and this board rightfully bashed him after most games. How in the world is he now a "Hall of Famer" is beyond me. Using only passing stats (in rankings) as an argument is not fair or accurate journalism. Any 4-year starter at UNT will probably surpass all other previous QB's. No one should be put in the Hall just because we've had poor quarterbacking since. Dan McCarney can't recruit.

I think Ken Washington, Jordan Case and Steve Ramsey are the only legit Hall of Fame quarterbacks (By not lowering the standards) These guys, and others, only played 10 games. Some played more with the DII playoffs. For the most part, there were only a handful of D1 bowls. With the addition of about 25 more bowls, teams are bowl eligible with 6 wins, (.500 record). Derek Thompson is Glen Ray and Ken Smith. 3th and 4th string quarterbacks back in the mid-70's. They rarely saw the field. No way in hell does Derek belong in this company.

Don't mean to beat up on Derek Thompson. He had an above average senior year. He, in my opinion, is just not Hall of Famer worthy. We didn't win a conference championship and ended up beating a bad UNLV team. (In one of the 25-28 bowl games in 2014. Their coach was fired the next year.

Please UNT, let's not lower this thing any further!

  20. Cooley's post in Texas A&M transfer J-Mychal Reese signs with North Texas was marked as the answer
MAJOR pickup by Benford! Wish he could sit out the entire season to possibly play with better big men in 15-16. Has been a top prospect throughout HS. Always great to get a kid off the Houston Hoops AAU squad.

J'MYCHAL is a lighting quick and fast lefty guard who can flat score at anytime. He has no problem creating his shot, can blow by the defense and finish in the paint, can pull-up from 15 feet or will knock down the 3 point shot with deep range. He has an extra gear that kicks in where needed, is a crafty finisher in traffic and has a soft touch on runners and floaters. He can keep his teammates involved and is a good man-to-man defender.

  21. Cooley's post in UNT revisits the Cotton Bowl on Coaches Caravan was marked as the answer
"First he raved about Jeremy Combs from Dallas and he thanked a Kimbell high school coach (whose name I didn't catch but nicknamed Snoops??) who was a former UNT player who helped him in his recruiting efforts".

Royce "Snoop" Johnson was a football recruit back in the 80's. Father "Goree", is the Asst AD of DISD. Brother "Roderick" is 1st year coach at Dallas Madison. Snoop is also Brett Shipp's favorite DISD coach to target. Snoop & Chris Davis, (brother of Erven Davis - Dallas Showtyme AAU) are cousins.
  22. Cooley's post in DRC: UNT tip-off event running blog was marked as the answer
I thought this was a 1st class event tonight! I was also was pleasantly shocked with the turnout. It was hell getting to and from Denton on I35 (from Dallas) but it was worth it

Don't know what the men will do this year but it should be a more balanced team. I wish Tony Mitchell was still here but teams generally perform better without the focus and attention on one guy. I would not get too excited about a 15 minutes (running clock) scrimmage but there is promise. If we could compete with the other teams in CUSA in the dunk line, I like our chances. Other than that, we want know much about this team until conference time.

Very pleased with the look of the women. We are not that tall but our girls are thick. They also have skills to beat most of the schools in CUSA. The success, or lack thereof, of this team will totally be on the shoulders of Mike Peterson. This may be the most talented group in a while.

Scoreboard is really nice! Sound system is better but it didn't seem like they had the volume turned up. Recruit Jeremy Coombs seemed to have a good time as well as the Maverick's Jae Crowder

Again, thumbs up on a good evening!
  23. Cooley's post in MGB: UNT lands top target Jeremy Combs, Dallas Carter was marked as the answer
Excellent pickup by the Mean Green!

Not sure how many of you guys saw Kenneth Lyons back in the day but Combs is Lyons 2.0. (without the elbows) Lyons was considered a nice recruit out of high school but not the national recruit in the eyes of the high majors. As we all know, he exploded when he arrived at North Texas; after adding bulk and muscle. Additionally, improving his perimeter shot. A future NBA prospect and NT HOF.

Combs' game and motor is eerily similar to that of Lyons. The difference at this time is his lack of muscle and bulk, which will come in college. What's funny is that I saw Combs again this past Saturday at the fall Great American Shootout. (Carrollton) I left saying, "damn I hope we get this guy".

Combs is a better recruit than Greg Wesley, who does not have the same skills down low. Jordan Williams was rated higher based on potential but didn't produce like Combs does. This kid is relentless down low and does not avoid contact. He also has a nice 10-15 foot jumper.

I think that by the end of his career, he has the potential to be an all league performer and MVP of the team. He just needs to bulk up a little more for the college level. He would help the Mean Green this year.

  25. Cooley's post in SMU Shows Dominance and Progress in Hawaii was marked as the answer
The Ponies did look impressive last night. Marcus Hunt will be the steal of the 2013 NFL draft. Hopefully the Dallas Cowboys will seriously take a look at him in the first round (stock rising) and possibly Zach Line in a later round. Hunt reminds me of JJ Watts (Houston Texans) that we passed up for Tyron Smith. Smith's a good player but we needed help at the defensive end spot more.

UNT will have the psychological advantage against SMU. This is the main reason they have avoided playing us and you can't blame them. UTA continues to kick our ass but we still feel superior. We've been talking about this series for the past 2-3 years. Not sure SMU fans are even aware of the upcoming series. We need to continue to take care of what we can control at North Texas (better recruiting) and stop hating on SMU. I actually feel that good football in Dallas in better for North Texas as well.
